Fire officials warn
residents not forget
about grass fire risk
BY VICKIE MOSS
THE ANDERSON COUNTY REVIEW
GARNETT – Just 20 seconds can
save a lot of time for local fire
fighters.
Fire officials are reminding
residents to obtain burn permits and take precautions when
burning, despite an usually wet,
cool summer that has significantly reduced the number of
grass and other fires this sea-
son.
The cool weather and rainfall
throughout much of the summer made things a little easier for rural fire fighters who
spent the previous two droughtplagued summers fighting
grass fire after grass fire. But
even with the rainfall, people
need to remain vigilant when it
comes to grass and other fires,
Garnett Fire Chief Pat Tate and
Anderson County Emergency
Management Director JD
Mersman said.

Shane Holloway attended Garnett Elementary School with his son, Emmett, to his left, on Monday, Sept. 16, as part of the
Watch DOGS (Dads of Great Students) program. The program was introduced this year and has been a big hit with students
and parents, GES principal Krista Hedrick said.
Dads return to school for new program
Watch DOGS program brings
male role models into the
classroom, schoolhouse
BY VICKIE MOSS
THE ANDERSON COUNTY REVIEW
GARNETT Because of his work schedule, Shane Holloway, of Garnett, doesnt
get many chances to attend his kids
school functions. But on Monday, Sept.
16, he was able to spend the entire day in
an honored role at Garnett Elementary
Center, as one of the districts new
Watch DOGS.
Holloway headed back to kindergarten Monday to spend about half of
the school day with his son, Emmett.
Later that day, he spent time with his
fourth grade daughter, Zia. Holloway
said he works 10-hour shifts at the WalMart Distribution Center in Ottawa and
often doesnt have an opportunity to
attend school events like Bullpup Pride
Assemblies and field trips.
Holloway is one of 65 fathers or father
figures who have signed up to spend
a day at Garnett Elementary School
under the new program, Watch DOGS
(Dads of Great Students). Principal
Krista Hedrick introduced the program
this year as a way to get men more
involved in the school, in order to provide positive male role models for students.
The Watch DOGS program began
in Georgia and has expanded nationwide, including at schools in Paola
and Osawatomie. Research has shown
that students perform better and have
healthier behaviors when fathers are
involved, Hedrick told USD 365 school
board members last spring when she
asked for permission to implement the
program. Potential volunteers dont
have to be dads, and already Hedrick
said she has welcomed grandfathers
and other male role models. The volunteers go through a simple screening
process and orientation.
At a kick-off pizza party at the beginning of the year, more than 200 people
including students and their dads or
father figures attended. Hedrick said
she didnt know what to expect, since
it was the first time such a program
had been offered, but she was very
pleased at such a high turnout. She
had hoped to schedule about 20 Watch
DOGS throughout the school year; so

Optometry office changes hands
Dr. Bill Whitesell, Vision
Source take over
Padfields office
BY DANE HICKS
THE ANDERSON COUNTY REVIEW
GARNETT – Local optometrist
Dr. Jerry Padfield remembers
when he first moved his practice to Garnett, he struggled to
convince local patients he was
anything more than that kid
down at the medical center.
That was 47 years ago, and
that kid recently sold his
near five-decade practice to
Dr. Bill Whitesell of Spring
Hill. Although the plan is for
Padfield to work for Whitesell
for a couple of years while
Whitesell adjusts to the new
practice, Padfield says it draws
him closer to the goal he used
to joke about.
I used to say I wanted 50
years, Padfield said. And Im
just about there.
The plan will be for Padfield
to retain his Kansas City
practice and continue to be a
part-time presence in the new
Garnett office for some period
of time. A veritable institution
in the ranks of local medical
professionals, Padfield is the
most senior member of the
practicing local medical community and came to Garnett in
1967 to open his practice with
Dr. David Leitch and Dr. Tom
Doughertys medical practice
office.
It was pretty generous of
Dave and Tom to let me come in
Padfield and Whitesell
with them, Padfield said of his
first location, which was at the

to discuss his job duties and
whether the department could
operate with just one person.
Until May, the department had
been handled by two people Mersman was promoted from
assistant to director after the
resignation of former director
Marvin Grimes.
At the time, Grimes and
Mersman told commissioners
they believed two people were
needed to run the department,
but commissioners said they
wanted to learn more about the
positions responsibilities and
duties. Grimes earned $18.50
per hour when he resigned his
post. Mersman was paid $15.35
an hour with an increase to
$19.69 when Grimes left.
Mersman has worked alone
since May, and last week told
commissioners he thinks he
can handle most of the responsibilities himself. By not having
an assistant director, the county is saving between $20,000 to
$25,000 per year, Mersman said.
The problem comes, however,
when Mersman is not available.
As emergency management
director, he oversees both emergency management and county
fire departments, as well as the
administrative responsibilities
that come with the position.
The position requires frequent
training and meetings, often out
of town. Mersman also could be
away from the office because of
vacation or other reasons.
Commissioners pointed out
that modern fire departments
do much more than fight fires.
They perform water rescues,
secure the scene when hazardous materials are present,
respond to medical calls and car
wrecks, and various other emergencies. Grimes was known for
responding to nearly all calls,
but Mersman said some types
of calls could be handled by
county fire departments without his presence. He said he
would need to respond to major
structure fires and large grass
fires, serious injury accidents,
large-scale weather events,
or emergencies that required
multiple agencies. He would be
responsible for coordinating
the rescue efforts and ensuring the safety of those involved,
but smaller events like a small
grass fires or medical call dont
require his hands-on attention.
During the discussion, commissioners and Mersman determined it would help to have
an on-call assistant who could
step in during those times when
Mersman will be away from the
office, such as during training,
meetings or vacations. They
anticipated such an on-call system would cost between $3,000
to $4,000 per year, and would
still save the county about
$20,000 or more each year by
not having a second full-time
employee in the department.
Its really going to vary
depending on the workload,
Mersman said. In the spring,
when we get busy with burning
season and we have more grass
fires and the call volume goes
into high gear, it can be difficult
for one person to manage.

I think we were the first in
the state to do that (couple an
optometry practice with a general medicine practice) because
they had just changed the law to
allow that.
Originally from Cherryvale,
Padfield built a reputation for
his Garnett practice over the
years, renown for his sense of

on behalf of the local hospital

several years, he said.
We had several conversations about it for quite some

looking forward to it because its
an opportunity to still practice
optometry and not have to deal
with insurance and with the government, he said.
Dr. Whitesell was raised in
Spring Hill and graduated from

Even so, the threat of fire
and the potential devastation
a fire can cause should never
be taken lightly, Tate said. He
reminds people to be careful
when discarding smoking materials, and to use a metal container to discard such material.
He said fall clean-up week, now
underway in communities like
Garnett and Greeley, is a good
opportunity to bag leaves, weeds
and brush and remove those
and other flammable material
from around homes.
Tate also recommends that
people take advantage of the
current pleasant weather to
have their homes heat source

stoves and flues are ready for
service.

simple: yuck.
Of course its
the clash of generations come full scale.
Where once tattoos were the venue of
military veterans or bikers shoulders
or forearms, nowadays the gnarly-looking art adorns almost any tissue, anywhere, and with any message- and on
younger and younger canvasses. Tatoos
once marked monumental events with
testosterone-charged flair ones military service, the name of a long-lost
love, or a soulful credo like Born To
Ride. Others were secret accessories
a stealthfully placed rose intended only
for the eyes of some future intimate. In
their rebellion and meaning they had a
sense of rebel cool.
But then came the mass market,
and the in your face-ness of the new
tattoo culture that sometimes meant a
drawing literally located on a face.
The future of the tattooed is much
for debate. Perhaps as the years go by
and any remaining remnant of visual
dignity finally fades, upper management at most employers wont mind
having a sales director with a big green
dragon arched across her neck and
jawbone; maybe IBM will be okay with
a head of human resources who has a
spider web stretched across her chest
and shoulders; maybe youll feel comfortable when you get pulled over by
a Kansas Highway Patrolman with a
green, blue and red ivy sleeve showing
clearly under his short-sleeved shirt.
When and if American culture devolves
to the point that everyday life is like
a Madd Maxx movie, then no one will
care.
But for now, tattoos dont say
traditional conservative values, and
maybe thats what the tattooed are trying to make clear. They are their own
person, after all, making their own
statement. They believe in this image
so much this snake wrapped around
a nude woman, for example that they
have married themselves to it with little
chance of divorce or annulment jobs
or public opinion be damned.
Critics have slammed beauty pageants for decades as degrading and
objectifying women. That debate will
surely continue as well but still, pageants continue with great efforts undertaken to show the non-physical attributes of contestants. Fad or future, tattoos certainly reflect a visual presence
and their interpretation will be noted
by the viewers and contestant judges.
Its a free country, afterall, and to
those who love them tatoos say something In the dominant and contemporary sense of fashion, however, they do
not say pretty.
There is only one rule for being a good

Never mind that Kerry punctuated the launch of his unintended Syria

Not all of Kerrys gaffes in London

I just want to say yay for the residents
on Cleveland Street. Im glad youre finally
standing up to the school bullies at last.
Im tired of them bullying people around
and doing what they want and what they
please against other peoples desires. I just
think its great that theyre hiring a lawyer
and standing up. Good luck Cleveland, good
luck.
Nice try, but like most of the bull you secretly circulated against the hospital vote you
have your facts wrong again. For starters,
FACE did have a treasurer listed according
to the law in its ads. It was Carol Wittman,
and I know that because I checked. Secrecy?
I beg your pardon. FACE held many public
meetings and its supporters made many
personal presentations – face to face, eye to
eye, and they stood there with no qualms
about voicing their opinion whether you
agreed or disagreed. There was never any
question who was supporting the school
bond vote, just like with the hospital. I
find it interesting that the people in favor
of progress in our community are above
board and willing to go public and stick
their neck out, while people like you hide
behind the county attorneys $10,000 desk
and take your shots anonymously. If you
had any guts, or much less if there was any
real law or justice in this county, we would
know who you are too. If youre so upset
you should file a complaint with the county
attorney, if you think that will help. Ha ha.
Several of us have called the city about the
woman on First Street having a garage sale,
this is her 12th day in a row now. They say
yeah shes not supposed to, but… If youre
gonna make a law on the books you should
enforce it or take it off. If it was me having
that garage sale for weeks at a time theyd
be down on my butt in no time. This is a
business and she has no license for a business at that house. Yet she flaunts it in the
citys face and they dont do anything about
it as usual.
I think its complete nonsense these barking dogs in town. Its high time the city did
something about it. Theres no sense in
sitting outside my house and listening to
barking dogs for four hours.
I enjoyed the Kincaid Fair Parade Saturday
but my heart stopped at the sight of the
combine barely making it under the utility
lines crossing the main drag and the kids
on top bumping the wires. This could have
been a tragedy. I hope someone had either
shut off power to those lines or that they
werent electrical lines. Thank you.

A military strike to change Assads
options in breakfast flatware is even
less stirring than Kerrys assurance of
unbelievable smallness. At the beginning of what is supposed to be the
administrations full-court press for a
strike, it has done more to open itself to
mockery than to persuade, more to set
back its case than to advance it.
Part of the problem, besides simple
incompetence, is that the administration has dual, and conflicting, audiences. The presidents political base wants
a strike to be as symbolic as possible,
while the rapidly diminishing number
of Republican supporters want it to be
as robust as possible. Please one side
and you alienate the other.
The case for a strike comes down to
a matter of national credibility that is
more likely to move Henry Kissinger.
Voters are not in the mood for any more
Middle Eastern entanglements, so the
administration is performing before a
hostile crowd. Its always easier to look
at the top of your game when you are
not up against a howling head wind of
public opposition.
If hes not already, the president may
soon wonder why, with the Syria vote,
he built a pyre, threw his presidency on
it and asked Congress to decide whether
to light a match. Considering the gravity of the possible defeat before him,
any escape hatch can look attractive,
even one provided by his secretary of
states careless words.
Talk about a fishy story. Three people over
the age of 18 driving around with a 15 year
old in the car, and the driver decides to
avoid a speeding ticket which would have
cost maybe a couple of hundred bucks at
the most by running from the cops. He goes
roaring down a dirt road with all those
lives in the car and rolls it, and then three
of them high tail it into the woods, all supposedly to avoid a speeding ticket? Anybody
can tell by reading the story in the paper
that the speeding ticket wasnt what the
driver nor the others were afraid of getting
caught with. Are we out there searching
them woods with drug dogs? A story full
of holes if Ive ever heard one. And what
were the names? We only have one name
involved in the paper. The driver should
be charged with attempted murder. I can

Find the right road
In Matthew 7 Jesus is nearing
the end of his teaching commonly
referred to as the Sermon on the
Mount which begins in Matthew
5. Jesus issues the following statement. Enter the narrow gate.
For wide is the gate and broad is
the road that leads to destruction,
and many enter through it. But
small is the gate and narrow the
road that leads to life, and only a
few find it. (Matthew 7:13-14)
Jesus issues a direct statement
concerning how to be obedient to
God. Do this, Enter the narrow
gate. It is the more difficult way.
He then presents an alternative.
The wide gate and the broad road.
From all appearances the way that
most of us would prefer. Jesus
says there will even be a crowd
there. It will be busy as many go
in and out of it.
This gate attracts those who
seek power or pleasure or prestige
or ease of life. It promises all
these things and even more. You
see young and old alike. The prob-

lem is they are all searching for
what they went there for and cant
seem to find it. The further in
you get the more confused things
become. While on a visit myself I
noticed the road begins to narrow
and leads to one single destination.
Jesus refers to it as destruction.
There seems to be a point of
no return where attributes such
as honesty, morality and integrity
are stripped away which ultimately destroys our ability to connect
with God at all. When all of these
attributes are stripped away we
ultimately achieve the state Jesus
refers to as destruction.
Yet after this warning Jesus
offers another statement. But
small is the gate and narrow the
road that leads to life, and only
a few find it. It is certainly the
road less traveled, nothing appealing about it . In a sense you could
compare the appeal of this gate
with the appeal of a glass of water.
Water doesnt have any taste, smell
or color but I have found water to
be the only thing that will quench
my thirst. Not pop, not tea or anything else for that matter.
I have also noticed that this road
broadens rather than narrows
as you make your journey down
it. I even discovered along the
way some good Friends. Patience,
kindness and goodness. I see signs
ahead that point to other virtues.
It is a hard road to get on initially. But is is a good road, a very
good road. If you seek this road
find Jesus, for he has stated, I
(Jesus) am the way.

Crest Middle School thumps Pleasanton 46-0
BY DANE HICKS
THE ANDERSON COUNTY REVIEW
COLONY – The CMS Lancers
hammered out a 46-0 win over
Pleasanton Middle School last
week.
It was pretty much all
Lancers all the way. Gage
Adams returned the opening
kickoff 60 yards for a TD. Caleb
Stephens scored the two point
conversion. The Lancers then
kicked off and recovered the
football, and were able to score
quickly as Gage Adams took
in a 15-yard TD breaking four
tackles along the way.
The Lancers held the Blujays
to four downs on their possession then scored again on an
Adams 20-yard carry to make
it 20-0 three minutes into the
game.
Caleb Stephens broke free
in a second quarter run and
sprinted 55 on a touchdown
run. Chad Classen scored the
two-point conversion. Hayden
Seabolt recovered a fumble on
Pleasantons next possession
and Chad Classen ran 10 yards
for a TD on the next play, making it 34-0 Lancers at the half.
Kadyn Utley scored on a 75yard run for the Lancers early
in the second half. The Blujays
fumbled the following kickoff
and Gage Adams recovered. The
Lancers marched down field
and Chad Classen sprinted to a
final touchdown that ended the
game early in the fourth period.

THE ANDERSON COUNTY REVIEW
LACYGNE – The Bulldogs
found some success against
the Prairie View Buffaloes in
the air Friday night, but not
enough to salvage a decisive
32-14 loss in the first Pioneer
League game of the season.
Now just two games into the
season the Bulldogs injuries
and their lack of depth may
be one of the biggest threats
to the season.
Weve lost five starters out
of 22 in two games, said head
coach Don Hilliard. Senior
Chase Ratliff was the latest to
go out with an injury Friday
night.
Prairie View put the first
6 points on the board in the
first quarter but the Bulldog
defense thwarted an extra
point attempt. The Buffs fired
up with three more successive
TDs in the second period to
pretty much seal the game in
the first half. The Buffs forced
AC into the air for 29 plays,
and Bulldog QB Zach Hilliard
threw three interceptions.
Our thinking coming into
the season was that we wanted
Zach throwing the ball around
ten times/game, Hilliard
said. Any more than that
and we were out of our element. His three interceptions
are a reflection of that. We
did not run the ball effectively
enough and were too often put
into a situation where we had
to throw.
The remainder of the game
saw AC test its passing offense
against a formidable collection of PV second-stringers,
as the Bulldogs fleshed out
224 passing yards and scored
again in the fourth period.
Hilliard connected 11 of 29
pass attempts for 224 yards.
Sophomore Chase Ratliff
caught only one of Hilliards
salvos but turned it into an 84
yard connection. Ryan Alley
had three receptions for 73
yards, sophomore Jacob
Rundle pulled down three for
40 and Eric Small also had
three for 27 yards.
The Buffaloes controlled
the ground game however,
and stopped up the line of
scrimmage to hold AC to only
83 yards rushing on the night.
AC managed 10 first downs
and coughed up 35 yards on
six penalties.
Rundle led AC with tackles
stacking up 9 first contacts.
Wyatt Hulett, Eric Small and
Ryan Alley all had six apiece.
Hilliard picked off two Buffalo
passes from his defensive back
position for a total of 34 yards.
Timothy Comfort snapped up
a fumble recovery.
AC steps up Friday night
for its homecoming contest
against St. Marys Colgan
from Pittsburg, who comes
to Anderson County fresh
off a 43-3 thumping of Baxter
Springs on Friday.
Against Colgan, we will
need to find a way to run the
ball and keep the ball out of
their hands as much as possible, Hilliard said.

Read with your children, not to them
MANHATTAN Research has
found that reading with young
children and engaging them
can make a positive impact on
the childs future and their family.
Bradford Wiles is an Assistant
Professor and Extension
Specialist in early childhood
development at Kansas State
University. For most of his
career, Wiles research has
focused around building resilience in vulnerable families.
His current research is
focused on emergent literacy
and the effect of parents reading with their children ages 3 to
5 years old.
Children start learning to
read long before they can ever
say words or form sentences,
said Wiles. My focus is on
helping parents read with their
children and extending what
happens when you read with
them and they become engaged
in the story.
The developmental process,
known as emergent literacy,
begins at birth and continues
through the preschool and kindergarten years. This time in
childrens lives is critical for
learning important preliteracy
skills.
Although his research mainly focuses on 3-5 year olds, Wiles
encourages anyone with young
children to read with them as
a family at anytime during the
day, not just before going to bed.
He also believes that it is okay
to read one book over and over
again, because the child can
learn new things every time.
There are always opportunities for you both to learn,
said Wiles, and it creates a
family connection. Learning is
unbelievably powerful in early

childhood development.
It goes deeper than just reading to them, as parents are
encouraged to read with their
children. Engaging children is
how they become active in the
story and build literacy skills.
There is nothing more powerful than your voice, your tone,
and the way you say the words,
said Wiles. When I was a child,
my dad read to me and while
that was helpful and I enjoyed
it, what we are finding is that
when parents read with their
children instead of to them, the
children are becoming more
engaged and excited to read.
Engaging the child means
figuring out what the child is
thinking and getting them to
think beyond the words written
on the page. While reading with
them, anticipate what children
are thinking. Then ask questions, offer instruction, provide
examples and give them some
feedback about what they are
thinking.
One of the things that I
really hope for, and have found,
is that these things spill over
into other areas, said Wiles.
So you start out reading, asking open-ended questions, offering instruction and explaining
when all of the sudden you
arent reading at all and they
start to recognize those things
they have seen in the books.
And thats really powerful.

2003: Mistrial in vehicle death case
Sept. 23, 2003
An Anderson County jury
declared a mistrial Thursday
after deliberating in the vehicular homicide case of a Wellsville
woman charged in the May 2002
deaths of two Central Heights
High School students. A district
court judge will decide Sept. 30
whether to allow a new trial
in the case. The prosecutor
charged the driver was negligent because she was looking at
her cell phone when the crash
occurred. The defense attorney
argued that a momentary distraction inside a moving vehicle
doesnt constitute negligence,
because it is common practice
among drivers.
The Kincaid Post Office
has been closed since April 29,
2002, because of a major ceiling collapse, and no one knows
when, or even if, the damage
will be repaired and the facility reopened. In the meantime,
the postal business is being conducted at the Citizens Bank in
Kincaid.
Sept. 23, 1993
A plan of action to finalize
construction of the Anderson
County Junior/Senior High
School was started during a work
session focused on clearing up
water leakage points and other
problems at the facility. The
roof leaks were the main reason
which prompted the meeting.
However, there is a checklist of
items still to be fixed or checked
out as part of a certification
process. The board wants this
list completed before the district

$60,000 for construction of the
facility. The district has been
named as co-defendant in two
non-payment suits in which subcontractors have not been paid
for their portion of work.
Due to the unexpected
increase in class sizes at Central
Heights, members of the USD
288 Board of Trustees approved
creating a third classroom for
first graders and hiring another
teacher. Currently, two classes
of first graders exist at Central
Heights. One teacher has 27 students and the other has 26.

Constitution Week is Sept. 17-23
Constitution Week, Sept. 1723, commemorates the 226th
year of the signing of the
Constitution of the United States
of America. With the fate of an
emerging nation in their hands,
American leaders met behind
closed doors at Philadelphia
State House for four sweltering months in the summer of
1787. They were to create a government that would stand the
test of time. The Constitutional

Sept. 20, 1913
For some weeks past, the
Uncle Sam Oil Company has
had men at work in this county
digging up the oil pipeline and
shipping it to Bartlesville, Okla.
Men were at work from Colony
to Greeley, and the pipe had
already been shipped from the
south part of the county, a car
was on the Santa Fe track here,
and the balance of the pipe is
about ready to be shipped from
Greeley. There is a provision of
law that whenever a party undertakes to remove all his property
from the county, the tax for the
current year becomes due an
payable at once. Mr. Simons has
been keeping tab on the proceedings of the Uncle Sam Oil
Company, and knew that it is in
the hands of a receiver, and naturally concluded that now was
the appointed time for Anderson
County to collect the tax of 1913
of $191. The tax warrant was
issued to Sheriff Decker, who
at once levied it upon the car
of pipe on the track here, and
also served notice to the agent.
The money was remitted to the
county treasurer, who feels that
he made a good collection.

agreed on one thing, America

Silver spoons being more
precious and cared for are
often easier to find than are
the base metal pewter equivalents.
The ease of making led to
many FAKE pewter spoons
being made in the early

Pewter spoons were made
