Attempt to avoid ticket leads to wreck
Vehicle wrecked after
men turn onto gravel
road to avoid ticket
BY VICKIE MOSS
THE ANDERSON COUNTY REVIEW
GARNETT Two adults and
a juvenile are facing possible
criminal and traffic charges
Legal action
could follow
ACHS exit
after an attempt to avoid a
speeding ticket led to a very
short chase with law enforcement, a car wreck and a brief
manhunt.
The incident began at about
4:55 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 7, when
an Anderson County Sheriffs
deputys radar clocked a vehicle
traveling 89 mph in a 65 mph
zone. The deputy attempted to
stop the vehicle at U.S. 169 north
of 2000 Road, but as the deputy
turned around the vehicle drove
east on 2000 Road.
It wasnt much of a chase,
however. The driver of the
vehicle lost control at 1990 and
Thomas Road, and the vehicle
rolled. Two adults and a juvenile
in the vehicle fled into a heavily wooded area surrounded by
bean fields. A 15-year-old from
Anderson County was found in
the vehicle with minor injuries.
Law enforcement officers
searched for the suspects until
7:15 p.m. when Sheriff Vern
Valentine called off the search.

THE ANDERSON COUNTY REVIEW
GARNETT – As USD 365 school
board members on Thursday
gave the final go-ahead to build
a new $316,000 exit out of the
Anderson County Jr./Sr. High
School parking lot, nearby property owners who oppose the
project took the next step toward
legal action against the district.
An attorney representing
seven residents and owners of
property on Cleveland Street
submitted a letter last month
to the school boards attorney,
outlining the residents concerns. The letter stopped short
of saying just what legal action
the residents would take, but
Overland Park attorney Nancy
Crawford said in the letter, …
the Board would be well advised
not to ignore the potential risk of
legal action from the Residents,
which if successful could add
over $100,000 to the cost of the
Project in direct damages …
The residents have protested
the proposed exit since learning of the districts plans this
past spring. A group of residents
attended a June board meeting
and said they already have to
deal with such issues as littering,
trespassing and criminal damage because of a sidewalk that
allows students to walk from the
school to meet rides or continue
walking down Cleveland Street.
They were concerned that an
exit that will funnel traffic onto
Cleveland will bring more problems. They cited legal arguments
that say private property cannot
be taken or damaged for public use without just compensation, although the property in
question is owned by the district
and has been since prior to the
arrested. The next morning, a
20-year-old man from Anderson
County turned himself in to law
enforcement and wrote a full
confession, saying the men fled
to avoid a speeding ticket. That
man was not arrested.
Charges are pending against
the three suspects, Valentine
said.

made the search difficult, and
he was concerned that hot
temperatures and dehydration
would create a dangerous environment for law enforcement
officers and the suspects.
About two hours later,

GARNETT Anderson County
officials hope to recoup some
of the $310,000 or so owed in
past due taxes Oct. 17, when
the county has its first personal property tax sale in nearly
a decade, according to a legal
notification published in this
weeks Review.
County officials have been
organizing a delinquent property tax sale after years of delays.
The last delinquent personal
property tax sale was in May
2004, which also followed the
previous 1993 sale by nearly a
decade. Before that 1993 sale, it
had been 26 years since the last
sale, in 1967. The county did have
a delinquent mineral rights sale
in May 2010., bringing many of
those properties back onto the
countys tax rolls.
This years tax sale currently
features 56 properties eligible to
be sold to recoup unpaid personal property taxes. Even if
the property is sold for less than
the amount of taxes owed, the
county will recoup some of the
money and the transfer of ownership is expected to at least
bring the properties back onto
countys tax rolls. Additional
fees tacked onto each property
mean that the buyer pays for
certain administration costs
and costs of publication in the
newspaper.
Its likely some owners will
pay the past-due taxes before the
sale, and the number of properties actually up for sale could
decrease. Anderson County
Counselor James Campbell previously told commissioners his
first draft listed 91 properties,
and that list had been winnowed
to 68 in June and was down to 56
by the time of publication this
week after notifications were
sent to the property owners.
The list includes a variety
of properties, although many
appear to be estates owned by
someone who is deceased, with
a list of possible heirs. The largest amount of unpaid property
taxes is $126,156.28 for property
owned by Guest Home Estates.
The smallest amount is for a lot
in Westphalia, on which $92.15
in unpaid taxes are due.
The total amount of delinquent property taxes on those
56 properties, not including special assessments and late fees, is
about $310,263.
County Treasurer Dena
McDaniel previously said property owners benefited from an
extra three or four years to get
caught up; county officials have
been trying to organize a delinSEE SALE ON PAGE 3A

Districts encouraged by early enrollment numbers
USD 365 shows small
increase ahead of
official enrollment
BY VICKIE MOSS
THE ANDERSON COUNTY REVIEW
TOPEKA Although enrollments at area schools wont
be finalized until the official
head count on Sept. 20, district
officials say they hope to hold
steady with the number of students who are attending area
schools and upon which state
funding will be based.
The news at USD 365 was
especially welcome, showing
steady and possibly increased
enrollment at a time when the
district had been expecting a
decline. Overall enrollment last
week was 1101 district-wide, up
from 1062 last year. That number was still fluctuating, and
Garnett Elementary Principal
Krista Hedrick said she was
expecting three new students at
school yesterday. GES showed
the biggest increase in students
compared to last year, with 447
students enrolled this year compared to 388 last year, which
was the first year of use for the
newly constructed school.
Three of the districts
schools showed slight decreases in enrollment. Greeley
Elementary School dropped to
70 students from 73 last year;
Mont Ida dropped by one, down
to 18 from 19; and ACJSHS
dropped to 462 students from
last years 471.
But the most encouraging
news comes at the kindergarten level. A total of 93 kindergarten students 72 at GES, 13
at Greeley and 8 at Westphalia
are enrolled so far this year.
Assuming that number remains
consistent throughout those
students school career, that
means the district will continue
to have graduating classes similar to those in the past. This
years senior class, however, is
just 68 students. The average
number of students per grade
district-wide – is about 83, and
ranges from a high of 99 to a
low of 62.
At Crest schools in southern
Anderson
County,
Superintendent Jerry Turner
said the district hasnt compiled a preliminary count and
wont release enrollment numbers until after Sept. 20. He
expects the district will have
similar enrollment to last year,
although he hopes numbers
increase.
Enrollment is especially
important because the state dispenses financial assistance to
the schools based on the number of full-time students. Under
the current state financing system, the district is paid $ $3,928
for each full-time student.

RECORD
ANDERSON COUNTY BOARD OF
COMMISSIONER AUGUST 26
Chairman Eugene Highberger called
the meeting of the Anderson County
Board of Commissioners to order at
9:00 a.m. on August 26 at the County
Commission Room. All present. The
pledge of allegiance was recited. Minutes
of the previous meeting were read.
Correction made that Phil Drescher,
Bukaty Co., met with the commission on
health insurance.
Road and Bridge
Lester Welsh, Road Supervisor, met
with the commission. He has received
a request for RW #1 to put a waterline
along the back side on a ditch in the
county right of way. There are trees on
the other side of the fence and they do
not want to kill the trees. Commission
approved.
Resolution 2013,0826:1
Commissioner Johnson moved
to approve resolution 2013, 0826:1
expressing the taxation policy of the
Board of Anderson County Commission
with respect to financing the 2014 budget for Anderson County. Commission
Howarter seconded. Approved 3-0.
Citizen Concerns
Dane Hicks, Garnett Publishing, met
with the commission. He has requested the county counselor file a lawsuit against the county attorney forcing
him to release the names of individuals of a group opposed to the hospital
bond issue. James Campbell, County
Counselor, stated it does not benefit
the county to sue itself. Dane feels the
county attorney should be pressured
to release the names. Commissioner
Highberger and Howarter said they
would like to know the names but agree
with the county counselor. Commissioner
Johnson said he would like to know the
names and would also like to know what
it would cost to pursue a lawsuit.
Department Head Meeting
Commissioner Johnson questioned
if anyone would like to volunteer to be
a wellness coordinator. Commissioner
Howarter stated he would like to keep
our insurance rates where they are at.
Sandy Baugher, Register of Deeds,
reported her cabinets are in and she
is waiting for the road department to
put them in. Dena McDaniel, Treasurer,
reported several counties are signing
up to do commercial motor vehicles. It
is voluntary and will start at the beginning of the year. Scott Garrett, Landfill
Supervisor, reported countywide cleanup will be Sept. 16th 21st. He has
just completed a hazmat class. Sheriff
Valentine reported 911 communications
had a problem with a piece of new
equipment but it has been fixed and
they are up and running. He would like
to do a resolution for medical and pre-
scription reimbursement from prisoners.
Phyllis Gettler, County Clerk, had nothing report. Commissioner Highberger
complemented everyone on their budgets.

building a new elementary
school in Garnett also approved
other improvements at each
school in the district, such as
new air conditioning units or
upgrades to the facility. At
ACJSHS, the improvements
called for building a second exit
out of the parking lot. The second exit not only would relieve
congestion during busy times,
it also would improve safety by
giving people an alternate way
out of the area in the event
of an emergency, school board
members have said.
The exit is the last remaining
project from that voter-approved
bond issue.
Board members initially
wanted the exit to head south
from the parking lot and meet
up with either Fourth Avenue
or an extended First Avenue
off Cleveland. But landowners
refused to sell the property that
would allow for those routes,
and the district was reluctant
to use eminent domain – the
taking of personal property by
a government for public use
– because the legal costs of such
action likely would exceed the
districts budget.
Instead, the district approved
a plan that would build a second
exit out of the east side of the
parking lot toward Cleveland
Street. The exit will include a
loop that allows drivers to enter
off Cleveland Street, pick up
students, and exit back onto
Cleveland.
At the boards regular board
meeting Thursday, Sept. 5, the
board gave its final approval for
the project. Nabholz, the construction manager for the project and the firm that oversaw
construction of the new Garnett
Elementary Center, submitted its guaranteed maximum
price for the project at $316,846.
Work on the exit is expected to
begin immediately, and should
be completed by Nov. 1.

Obama unravels whats
left of US reputation with
dithering over Syria
It has become clear by observing the
recent weeks debacle over a military
strike in Syria that the United States
is so incredibly resilient it can survive
nearly a full five years with effectively no
President at all.
The most damning implication of
President Obamas bumbling on the
Syrian scenario, in which public debate
has brewed for weeks over a retaliatory strike against
Syrian government EDITORIAL
forces who supposedly used chemical
weapons against
rebels there, is
that Obama has
now convinced the
world of his lack
of leadership and
reduced the U.S.
to a clumsy stage
hand in the world
by Dane Hicks,
theater. Now U.S.
PUBLISHER
House Speaker
John Boehner and
House Majority Leader Eric Cantor are
complicit with a ridiculous plan that
their constituents oppose by nearly 60
percent.
It is as though someone marked out
the precisely wrong path to take with
Syria, cut the telephone lines between
the White House and the Joint Chiefs of
Staff to shut off any military advice, and
led a sleep walking U.S. President perfectly along its farcical course. If not for
the seriousness of the repercussions on
our nation, we might think Obama was
auditioning for a world politics version of
Dumb & Dumber.
Our nation should surely hope that
the Presidents fiascotic approach to
Syria is indicative of some kind of
schism between himself and military
and policy planners in his administration
that his apparent disconnect with not
just recent Middle East history but also
military planning and basic judgment
is rooted in some behind-the-scenes tiff
that keeps him from talking to advisors.
Heaven help us if Obamas advisors are
actually telling him this is a good idea.
Even a novice can pick apart the
plan: 1) competing factions in Syria are
defined by Bashar Assads government
forces (anti-Israel and pro-Russian for
decades) pitted against rebels backed
by the Muslim Brotherhood and al
Quaeda. No matter who wins, neither
makes much of a bridge partner for the
U.S. or its interests in the region; 2) It
is fully possible, as crafty and diabolical as al Quada has proven to be in the
past, that the terrorists gassed their
own rebel forces in hopes of getting the
U.S. to charge in on its white human
rights stallion. What would please radical Muslims more than more American
deaths, economy-wrecking expense and a
face-off with the Russians and Chinese?;
3) If an attack were warranted and somehow in the interests of the U.S., military
planners typically like to have a little
thing they call the element of surprise,
rarely obtained after weeks of public
dawdling by the President and now a fullscale national and Congressional debate.
Obamas involvement of Congress in
some desperate attempt authenticate
himself and save him from his indecision is the icing on the cake of his dearth
of leadership. While the President, the
Congress and the news networks hemhaw, Assad moves his military hardware
into residential neighborhoods to guarantee great video of slain civilians in the
case of a U.S. strike, and fortifies the nonmobile targets to ensure maximum U.S.
losses.
And, after talking about striking, to
do nothing brings with it accusations
of cowardice on the world stage. It is a
conversation which a president should
never have engaged without a resolution
already in the bag.
As the capstone of his incompetence,
President Obama has led himself and the
nation into an ambush where the only
possible winners are our enemies.
I find it very interesting that there is a huge
concern on the part of Mr. Hicks about who
had the temerity to anonymously oppose
the hospital bond issue. Less than two years
ago we had a school bond issue which was
supported by a very anonymous committee
that simply called themselves FACE. I was
curious for my own information who was
funding it and how much money was being
spent where, but there was no treasurer
mentioned in any of their advertisements
nor had there ever been anything filed with
the county. I know because I checked. Why
were the finances of the FACE committee
allowed to remain secret but we want to
know who opposed the hospital bond issue
which passed? Does it matter what side Mr.
Hicks is on the issue?
I wonder why for the second year in a row
we have a City of Garnett police officer
driving on an expired tag? This includes
driving all over town, to and from work and
also parking his truck in the parking lot at
the police department. Same officer as last
year. How long will it take for him to get a
tag this year? Last year it was over eight
months. Slow learner?
President Obama, the sap
BY RICH LOWRY
NATIONAL REVIEW
President Barack Obamas most telling act
on the international stage may have come in
a meeting in early 2012 in Seoul, South Korea,
with Russias seat-warming president, Dmitry
Medvedev.
Before the two got up
to leave, President Obama
asked — in an exchange
caught on an open mic — that
Moscow cut him some slack.
This is my last election,
Obama explained. After my
election I have more flexibilLowry
ity. Medvedev promised to
transmit this information
to Vladimir, referring, of course, to the power
behind the throne, Vladimir Putin.
When he received the message, Putin must
have chortled at the heartbreaking naivete
of it. Here was the leader of the free world
pleading for more time to get along with his
Russian friends on the basis of an utterly
risible assumption of good will. Here was a
believer in the policy of reset who still didnt
get that the reset was going nowhere. Here was
weakness compounded by delusion.
Putin didnt care about Obamas flexibility so
much as any opportunity to thwart the United
States. Obama said that Syria President Bashar
al-Assad had to go; Putin worked to make sure
he stayed. Obama said that National Security
Agency leaker Edward Snowden had to return
to the United States; Putin granted him asylum.
When Putin related to a group of Russian students that he had told Snowden to stop doing
damage to the United States, the students did
the only thing appropriate upon hearing such
a patently insincere claim — they laughed out
loud.
Vladimir Putin surely isnt the only one
in the world who regards the president of the
United States with barely disguised contempt.
As the Syria crisis burns hotter, President
Obama has never looked so feckless. He has
perfected the art of speaking reproachfully
and carrying little or no stick. The grand
theory of his foreign policy coming into office,
that more national self-abasement would win
us greater international good will and respect,
has done the opposite. Adversaries dont fear
us, and allies dont trust us.
When Assad prepared to use chemical
weapons last year, President Obama warned
of a fearsome red line, with no intention of
following up on it. When Assad called his bluff,
the president announced he would provide
small arms to the rebels in retaliation, but he
hasnt actually done it yet. Is it any wonder
that Bashar al-Assad would, like Vladimir
Putin, think he had taken the measure of
the man? Last month, he killed hundreds in
another chemical-weapons attack.
The sharply worded warning ignored by
everyone has become the Obama administrations characteristic rhetorical trope. It warned
the military junta in Egypt not to crack down
on the Muslim Brotherhood, which was taken
with all the seriousness of its admonitions to
Assad to step aside.
Meanwhile, Iran progresses toward a
nuclear weapon, Iraq reverts to civil war, and
al-Qaida gains in Yemen and Somalia. In an
essay in Commentary magazine, analyst Elliott
Abrams argues that the guiding principle of
Obama foreign policy is, as he once put it, to
end the old habits of American international activism and leadership. The new habit,
evidently, will be tolerating irrelevance and
humiliation.
Id like to know why the city isnt looking
at the old Garnett Church Furniture factory? The roofs all caved in on the building, its just rock walls standing. It needs
to be torn down. And the citys wondering
why theyre not getting donations for the
rec center. Seems like donations slowed
down when they let city employees go there
free. Perhaps they ought to charge the city
employees and then they wouldnt be worried about money.
Im so tired of people walking their dogs and
letting them poop and pee in our yards. Hold
onto them til you get to a vacant lot and
then let them go. Im thinking of bagging it
up and giving it back to the owner. Please
have respect for other peoples yards.
Okay, just because a city law officer
got caught on duty doing something he
shouldnt have, he gets the choice to be
terminated or resign and be able to be reemployed with another distict or county
with no repercussions? I mean, really? That
is really messed up. What is next Garnett?
Ive got an idea. How about we send congress to Syria?
Have you gone to the hospital and tried to
make an appointment to see a Kansas City
specialist that comes down to our local
hospital? You cant. They give you a phone
number. You have to make a toll call to
make an appointment. They are trying to
make it just as difficult for us old people as
they can. I for one cant hear good enough
to call so Ill just quit the Kansas City doctor. And if this is the hospitals idea, Im
sorry I ever voted for the new hospital.

Bulldogs push tough young players to lead
GARNETT – The success of
Anderson Countys 2013 football season may weigh the
most on just two things: Guts
and sophomores.
Last years 3-6 Bulldogs
lost key starters to graduation, but 15-year head coach
Don Hilliard says it wasnt
the personnel that limited last
years team nor will it be personnel this year. It was the
push.
For us to be successful, we
have to make plays, Hilliard
said.
Its a breakthrough idea for
many younger players who
many times on the field are
sweating the details of their
position and the technique
along with stage fright and
the fear of being pulled – but
Hilliard recounts it as rising
above those worries to a new
plane – the plane of we have
to make this play work for us,
and I have to do everything in
my power to make something
good happen for us on this
play.
Hiliard puts it in the context of the 2012 season.
We had two games last
year where we were overmatched, he said, and two
games that we handled. The
other five were toss up games.
In those five games last year,
we were 1-4. We were tied,
ahead or within one score at
halftime, Hilliard said.
The bottom line was there
were moments in the games
where we simply did not
make the plays we needed to
in order to win.
Hilliard said the teams
goals for 2013 were pretty simple: compete for the league
championship; make the
playoffs and have a winning
season. But it all loops back
to each players handling of
every single play when hes
on the field.
In order to accomplish
those goals we have to improve
in our ability to make plays,
he reiterated.

GARNETT – The 2013 AC
Bulldog volleyball squad is
thin in its older ranks and generally height-challenged with
the exception of a couple of
younger players, but it sports a
strong showing of sophomore
athletes.
The Bulldogs hustled out
a 25-12 season record in 2012
before falling to Louisburg in
Kansas 4A Substate. The team
lost all but on of its starting
lineup to graduation, saying
goodbye to Britton Brownrigg,
Alexandra Garbarino, Annsley
Graham, Ashlyn Martin,
Jaime Mersman and Michaela
Stevenson.
Glenn Suderman, in his
29th year coaching volleyball
in Garnett, noted the team
returns only one senior in
Reanna Romig, 52 and one
of three co-captains for 2013.
Romig takes over at the Libero
post to anchor the teams back
row defense.
The squads two returning varsity players were both
freshmen last year. MaKayla
Kueser at 57 returns to boost
ACs hitting ability and makes
for a solid all-around defensive
player as well. Reagan Jirak,
58, returns to her sophomore
season with 145 attacks on her
stats from 2012 and will serve
as team co-captain.
The rest of ACs varsity
lineup includes juniors Alexis
Pedrow (57), 51 setter Jessica
McCullar, sophomores Kinlee
Jones (56) and 60 hitter/
blocker Cassidy Lutz. Madison
Martin, at 511, rounds out the
varsity as its only freshman
and will use her height to post
on the front row for blocking
and attacking needs.

AC girls run for Top 10 at state in 2013
GARNETT – The ACHS cross
country teams take the course
in 2013 with a fair stable of
talent but in need of leadership that will help tighten
and define them toward some
well placed goals for the season.
Head coach Mike Sibley,
in his 8th year in charge of
AC cross country, said his
girls squad returns six of the
schools best-ever performers
in the 4K in Bel Sibley, Bailee
Wilson, Paige Scheckel, Eliza
Sibley and Remi Hedges
and Gwen Sibley. The girls
team lost 4-year team leader
Amanda Moody to graduation last year.
With seniors Tayler
Porter and Hannah Steele
this core could prove to be a
force at the state level if they
choose to dedicate themselves
to being the best they can be,
Sibley said.
On the boys side Ian
Comfort, Tanner Wilson,
Vincent Trujillo and Tyler
Jumet return as lettermen
from the 2012 season. They
boosted a team that managed
a third palce league finish
and made their best showing with a 3rd place finish
at the Parsons meet. Sibley
said these core runners have
gained experience but still
need to coalesce behind some
solid team leadership.

our boys team to apply its
potential and compete for the
(Pioneer) league title, Sibley
said. If Ian Comfort and
Storm Pracht (both seniors)
become dedicated, underclassmen Vincent Trujillo,
Tervor McDanial and Josh
McAuley will rise up to meet
their challenge.
For the boys team, Sibley
said hes aiming for the 2013
squad to best their third
place finish in the league last
year with a first place finish
this year. Theyll have tough
traditional competition in
the league from last years
state qualifiers at Iola and
Wellsville.
He said his girls squad
should take that Pioneer
League title again – as they
have every year for the past
6 since the Pioneer League
was formed- and double down
with a team qualification for
the State 4A meet and a finish somewhere in the top
10. He expects the AC squad
to be the runners to beat in
the league and through the
regional qualifying course
this year.
Other members of the
2013 squad include freshmen
Justin Jumet, Jacob Null and
Brady Rockers; juniors Jacob
Anderegg and Jordan Null.
The girls roster also includes
sophomores Morgan Egidy,
Rachel Gilbert, Julie Hartman
and juniors Tana Benton and

AC golfers lead off
with 5 freshmen
GARNETT – The Anderson County
golf team starts the season with five
freshmen and only two upper classmen, so they had a lot of ground to
cover between the seasons start and
the season opener Sunflower Hills
meet last Tuesday.
One of the hardest courses the
girls will play and some of the toughest competition is our first tournament, 6th year head coach Nicole
Wiehl said last week. Golf is one of
the hardest sports to start as a freshman. You have to not only learn the
skills to play, but you have to learn
the rules and etiquette for tournaments.
So it makes it an early-season sprint
for the five newbies – Miranda Akes,
Abbey Barnes, Kirsten Freeman,
Sydney Holloran and Katie Lybarger.
Wiehl said three of the five freshmen
played junior high golf, so they have a
background in the sport to build on.
The team has two upperclassmen
that have great leadership skills that
will help this young team on and off
the golf course, Wiehl said.
The Bulldogs lost veterans Carolyn
Hermreck and Darissa Maley to
graduation in 2013. Hermreck placed
in the top 10 at regionals last fall and
went to state her senior year as well.
This year the teams veterans will
be looking to top their own performances from last year.
Bailey Rockers (senior) has three
good years of high school golf experience, Wiehl said, but her best year
is yet to come. She spent most of
her summer playing in golf tournaments and attending OSU golf camp
– shes already shown me that she has
improved from last year and is working hard to improve her game.
Following Rockers is junior
Samantha McCullough, in her second
year on the links with the Bulldogs,
who earned a responsibility last year
as a hard worker and whose game
Wiehl said has definitely improved
since last year.
Wiehl said the competition will be
traditional.
Chanute and Girard are always
tough to beat, she said. We will play
against them at least twice this year
before the regional tournament.
ACs goals are pretty well prounouned.
Team goals are to place in the
top three at the majority of our tournaments, place 4th or better at our
home tournament, and place in the
top 5 at regionals, coach Wiehl said.
Individually, Id like to see Bailey
medal with at least one first place finish, place in the top 3 at regional and
place in the top 20 at state.
My goal for Samantha is to place
in the top 10 in at least one tournament.

Vikes go back to basics
after struggling in 2012
RICHMOND Its been a shift
back to the fundamentals of the
game in recent weeks for the
Central Heights Viking volleyball team, as first-year coach
Cadi Marcum takes a back-tobasics approach to a larger than
average squad of girls for 2013.
Unfortunately with this
being my first year coaching at
Central Heights I didnt know
anything about their team or
program last year, and since I
wasnt able to have my camp
until later in the summer
I wasnt able to really get to
know them over the summer,
Marcum said.
The Vikings struggled
through a 6-23 season last year
that culminated in a substate
loss to Wellsville after one of
their best wins of 2012 over
Jayhawk Linn.
Ive hit the team hard with
fundamentals all week thats
all weve done. Im sure they
would liked to have hit more,
but they know that in order to
be able to hit we have to be able
to have good, controlled, consistent passes.
Central Heights ended up
with more girls out for regular
season volleyball than showed
up for the teams annual summer camp a total of 45 fleshing
out the roster by the beginning
of the school year.
The team returns key 4-year
varsity player Kenzie Hayward
and Whitney Kraus to lead the
2013 squad. Marcum credits
both girls with exemplary attitudes and leadership skills that
will help focus their younger
teammates. Despite a lackluster performance in 2012 another
years experience on the younger players cant be anything but
a benefit, she said.
I think every year that goes
by the more and more a player
is exposed to the game the better she becomes, Marcum said.
The more exposure they get
the more familiar they become
with the system, which makes
their confidence grow and
allows their skills to really be
showcased.
Central Heights faces off
against Jayhawk Linn tonight
at home.

Vikings bring back experience, but numbers down
RICHMOND – The Vikings
return 10 lettermen from
their 4-6 2012 season, but
overall numbers are down
this year and head coach
Kent Schulte says the team
has had to work at becoming more physical in these
early weeks to become competitive.
The Vikes lost Drew
Beckwith, Dillon Schwab
and Dakota Snow to graduation last year impacting both
the teams offense and defensive thickness. Its a problem
Schulte says he knows the
competition in the Pioneer
League wont overlook.
We are very thin at the
skill positions, Schulte said.
I think our strength will be
our line.
And the 2013 Vikings
bring back playing experience in the host of 2012 lettermen. Among them are
seniors Jordan Horstick at
QB, Tristan Davis, Tyler
Hendron OL/DL, Tanner
Erhart and Coby Robertson
LB; juniors Jacob Anderson
OL/DL, Gavin Holler WR/
DB, Chance Schooler and
Chase Brown, along with
sole sophomore letterman
Jacob Pryor.
Its hard to tell for Central
Heights fans which rivalry
will get the most mileage this
year. The Vikings blanked
longtime rivals Osawatome
last year 38-0, but Anderson
County stepped over them
56-6. But a years worth of
shake-up and realignment
for both the Trojans and
Bulldogs may make those
anybodys ballgames.
Iola,
Prairie
View,
Wellsville and Anderson
County will again be at the
top of our competiton,
Schulte said. Theyre all
well coached and have numbers. Our numbers are down
this year and that will add to
the challenge.

Lancers want to mix,
match for strong season
COLONY The Crest Lancers return
two offensive and defensive starters
to the Three Rivers League 8-man
Division 2 gridiron this year and will
suffer from a loss due to a key injury. But coach Brent Smith says we
can expect a well-balanced team that
mixes running and passing as much
as it mixes experienced and new players.
The Lancers are coming off a 2012
season that saw them notch a 7-4
record and a bi-district championship.
Theyll come back without senior tight
end Brock Ellis, who at 64 was the
teams ace receiver but who injured
his knee in a basketball game last year
and will not take the field in 2013.
Smith returns to his 9th year as
Lancer head coach with a 47-39 record.
Crest nailed down a state runner-up
win in 1983 and won its league title on
a three-season run from 2008-2010.
The 2013 season finds the Lancers
with some definite holes to fill from
last year. Standouts Kyle Hammond
(QB), Jesse Boone (OL) receiver
Jordan Morton and Dylan Sedlak (DB)
were all lost to graduation last spring,
making 2012 TRL first team linebacker
Clayton Miller and honorable mention
defensive lineman Landon Stephens
the only returning starters for 2013.
Miller racked up 105 tackles last season for an 9.5 game average with four
sacks. Stephens had 46 tackles on the
season. Both notched 11 tackles for a
loss of yardage in 2012.
Theyre joined by fellow return-
ing lettermen juniors Austin Green,
Braden McGhee and Codi Vermillion
as well as sophomores Hunter Frazell,
Evan Godderz, Garret Sipe, Colton
Strickler and Dylan Young.
Smith said this season is one that
finds the Lancers with a lot of expectations.
We will have a mixture of seasoned
players with youth, which will be beneficial as the season goes, Smith said.
Offensively look for a team that is
looking very multi-dimensional. We
have the ability to run and pass, and
that should keep defenses on their
toes. He said a major objective for the
year will be to improve on last years
defensive performance.
In 2012 the Lancers gave up way
too many points, Smith said. We look
for our defense to be vastly improved
something our team is known for and
to make a statement with throughout
the season, he said.
Smith said his goals are for the
Lancers to be competitive in each
game, win the DIV II Three Rivers
League, place in the top two at district
and make it to the 1A Kansas playoffs.
Look for Chetopa to be the team
to shoot for if you want to finish in
the top, Smith said. Throughout the
state I see Baileyville and Hanover as
the top teams in Division II.
Others on the Lancer roster this season include sophomores Kyle Riblett,
Will Star and Brandon Brallier; junior
newcomer Kyle Bowen and senior
Taylor Davis.

COLONY – Coming back from an 0-18 season last
year, the Crest Lancer volleyball team has a narrow
set of goals this year.
Play hard, learn to win, said second-year head
coach Abigail Hermreck. We are a fairly young team.
We have to figure out how to play to win.
A winless season is unquestionably grueling. Still,
five lettermen from last year came back this season
with the faith to give the Crest volleyball program
another shot. Juniors Madison Covey (55), Emalee
Seabolt (59) and Tiffany Jackman (55) return to
2013 to form the core of the squad, along with seniors
Paige Tush (58) and Emily Frank (58) – Crests
strong player in the middle who suffered a knee
injury last year and missed most of the season.
We have had some really intense practices,
Hermreck said of the squads pre-season work. Now
we need to carry that over to an entire set.
Hermreck said the key for the team will be to
take one match at a time. Afterall theres no where
to go but up. She said Uniontown and Jayhawk-Linn
finished first and second in the Three Rivers League
Division II tournament August 31, and she expects
they will continue to pace the league and the schedule
for the rest of the season.
Other players rounding out the Crest roster in 2013
include senior Maley Sherman (58), junior Regan
Morrison (59), sophomores Emily Weber (51)
and Lupita Rodriguez (54) and freshmen Karlee
Hammond (54), Laurel Godderz (57) and Miranda
Golden (60).

Burlington tops AC in Bulldog opener
BY DANE HICKS
THE ANDERSON COUNTY REVIEW
GARNETT Burlington and
Garnett traded punches all
night Friday but it was a goal
line pass play in the waning
seconds of the game that gave
Burlington the win 28-24.
With penalties and missed
plays, it was a hole that the
Bulldogs spent most of the
night digging, head coach Don
Hilliard said.
We did not make the plays
we needed to, not just in the
fourth quarter but all game
long, Hilliard said. We hurt
ourselves with penalties that
negated positive plays and did
silly things that helped prolong
their drives.
Key to the losses of offensive
yardage were no less than three
blocking in the back penalties
which cost AC 15 yards apiece.
AC managed a half-time lead 148 but the penalty losses would
come to fruit for the Wildcats in
the third and fourth periods.
But Hilliard said the news
wasnt all bad.
On one hand given our relative inexperience, I was glad
that we were in a position to
win that game- a 10 point lead
with a quarter to go.
It was a great position to be in,
but it wasnt to be. The Wildcat
defense had been solid most of
the night, and AC turned the
ball over to Burlington with
50 seconds to go. The Wildcats
drove down field and hit #28
Drew Young with a thicket-busting short pass over the center to
put the TD on the board. AC got
off a couple of futile plays in the
final seconds, to no avail.
AC
quarterback
Zach
Hilliard rushed for 109 yards
followed by Lee Koch with 88
and Ryan Alley with 31. Alley
pulled down two receptions for
54 yards. Eric Small had a 22
yard kick return and caught a 9
yard pass. Hilliard passed for 63
yards on the night.
Wyatt Hulett led the Bulldogs
on defense with 6 unassisted
tackles. Grady Schuster had 5.

The discussion will be led by

This is the story of the
Meisenheimer family, told
by James, a third-generation
American living in Beatrice,
Missouri. Its where his German
grandparents-Frederick and
Jette-found themselves after
journeying across the turbulent Atlantic, fording the floodswollen Mississippi, and being
brought to a sudden halt by the
broken water of the pregnant
Jette.
Everything Frederick had
seen had been unimaginably different from the dry, dour streets
of home, and to his surprise he
was not sorry in the slightest.
He was smitten by the beguiling
otherness of it all. And so began
my grandfathers rapturous love
affair with America-an affair
that would continue until the
day he died.

Colony Christian Church offers The Story
The Holy Bible is central
to our Christian faith, said
Pastor Mark McCoy of Colony
Christian Church, but many
people are intimidated by
its scope and size. The Story
gives us a way to journey from
Genesis to Revelation together
in 31 weeks to help everyone
build their personal story on
the truth of Gods Story!
The Bible is the best-selling
book in history, but how many
people in Anderson County are
actually reading it? A Gallup
survey reports the average
American household has four
Bibles. However, research by
Pew Forum on Religion and
Public Life (2008) found that
only 16 percent of Americans
read the Bible every day.
Colony Christian Church is
hoping to reverse this trend,
starting with its own congregation. Pastor Mark McCoy
believes that The Story, a
Zondervan best-seller, is the
right tool to increase Biblical
literacy, helping readers understand Gods story from Genesis
to Revelation and how their
own stories intersect with
Gods. Consisting of 31 chapters of carefully-selected scriptures sequenced in chronological order, The Story presents
the word of God in an engaging
format, reading like a novel.
I want the people in our
church gathering and in the
surrounding area to know the
incredible love God has for
them and find their story in
His story, said Pastor Mark
McCoy.
The Story Church Campaign
is a unique program providing
up to 31 weeks of curriculum
for children, teen and adult
Sunday school and up to 31
weeks of corresponding sermons. When accompanied by
reading through the five agerelated books (The Story, The
Story: Teen Edition, The Story
for Kids, The Story for Children,
and The Story for Little Ones),
the entire church can be literally on the same page for
31 weeks. Colony Christian
Church plans to begin the experience on September 15, 2013.
With thousands of par-
ticipating churches nationwide, The Story is becoming
a movement that is bringing
wide-ranging benefits to local
churches. Many have reported
increased community outreach,
increased Biblical literacy, congregational growth and a greater understanding of how Gods
story reveals the reasons for
the things that happen in mans
story.
Colony Christian Church
would like to invite you to
experience The Story. Sunday
Worship begins at 10:45am. For

Battle of Black Jack site: History near home
for property tax sale
Sept. 16, 2003
The final drive toward an
investment deadline for East
Kansas Agri-Energys Garnet
ethanol plant project will get
underway with a meeting at the
Anderson County High School
in Garnett Sept. 30. The focus
of the effort will be on enhancing the grass roots nature of
the proposed 20 million-gallon
plant. Equity Drive Director Jill
Zimmerman said the project
always has been about providing
economic stimulus for the area,
which can best be achieved with
a broad investment base from
the area farmers, ranchers and
business people who will benefit
most from the project.
A Kincaid councilwoman has
been charged in district court
with allegedly threatening a
local man with a deadly weapon.
The incident apparently took
place the day after Kincaids city
court hearings in which the city
judge directed an enforcement
order against a Kincaid man,
who was named the victim of the
councilwomans threat, for violations of a city dog ordinance.
The
Anderson
County
Development Agency has been
working the past few months
toward the possibility of establishing a low-impact industrial
park in the Greeley area. When
the ethanol plant is completed
in the Golden Prairie Industrial
Park in Garnett, that park will
be full and the county will be
in need of industrial space, the
areas economic director said.
The agency is looking for 30 to 50
acres of land and there are several possibilities in the Greeley
area that are flat, clear and with
frontage on U.S. 169.
The
Anderson
County
Commission passed a resolution Monday which continues
its financial support for the
Anderson County Hospital with
about $226,000 in tax money for
general operating expenses in
1994. The $226,000 the equivalent of six mills in tax assessment equals about four percent
of the hospitals annual operating budget. In 1993, the hospital
had a projected budget of $4.9
million. This is the third consecutive year that the commission
has approved the resolution.
Three years ago, the ACH Board
of Trustees approached the
county about raising six mills in
taxes to helps support the operation of the facility, which was

Black Jack Battlefield, located three miles east of Baldwin
City, Kansas is nationally significant as the site of the first
armed conflict between proand antislavery forces of the
United States. Though small
in scale, the Battle of Black
Jack in 1865 had implications
far beyond Kansas Territory.
The debate over Kansas vividly
reflected growing national friction over slavery and the events
there clearly marked a turning
point in the march toward the
Civil War.
The battle further divided
the nations already-polarized
abolitionist and proslavery factions. As politicians, newspa-
pers, and citizens watched the
story of Bleeding Kansas
unfold, hints of a larger potentially violent conflict to come
became increasingly evident.
Black Jack Battlefield is also
significant for its association
with abolitionist John Brown.
Both the battle and the coverage of the battle in the nations
newspapers which followed,
introduced the nation to John
Brown, who called for armed
insurrection to end slavery.

THE ANDERSON COUNTY REVIEW Tuesday, September 10, 2013
Jacobs, Caudell married
The sinlessness
of Jesus
The New Testament teaches that Jesus was entirely
free from sin. We read in
2nd Corinthians 5:21, For
our sake he (God), made him
(Jesus), to be sin who knew
no sin so that in him we might
become the righteousness of
God. This verse explains
how God assigned the responsibility of our sin to Christ,
making it possible for him to
be punished justly for that
sin.
Being without sin means
Jesus never disobeyed his
Father but he loved Gods law
and found joy in keeping it.
In our fallen human nature
there will always come a time
when we will be reluctant to
obey God. We will be tempted
to evade moral and spiritual
matters, to cut corners or take
the easy way out, to be less
than loving to others and get
lost in self-pity for ourselves.
All of these temptations came
upon Jesus but he did not
yield to any of them.
For our salvation it was
necessary for Jesus to be free
from sin. Like a lamb without blemish or spot. In the
Old Testament sacrificial system in order for a lamb to
be an acceptable offering it
had to be free from all defect.
This is why Christ sinlessness
qualified him to die for the
sins of others. If he had been
sinful he would have needed a
Savior himself, and his death

would have not helped us. In
order to understand this it is
necessary to understand that
in the Incarnation God came
as one person existing in two
natures. Jesus was fully God
and fully man. The difference
in his human nature from
ours is that sin was lacking.
By nature we are sinners.
We are not sinners because
we sin. We sin because we
are sinners. Let me say this
again. Jesus could not sin,
but was able to be tempted.
Satan tempted him by offering
Jesus the easy way out if he
would only bow down to him
and worship him. Jesus felt
the temptation to retreat from
the cross. At the times when
Jesus was tempted we must
understand Jesus human
nature was conformed to his
divine nature. By virtue of
Jesus perfect obedience he
is qualified to be our all-sufficient Savior.

Constitution
Week
(September 11-17) commemorates the 226th year of the
Signing of the Constitution of
the United States of America.
With the fate of an emerging
nation in their hands, American
leaders met behind closed doors
at Philadelphia State House for
four sweltering months in the
summer of 1787. They were
to create a government that
would stand the test of time.
The constitutional Convention
delegates came from different
backgrounds. They all agreed
on one thing, America needed
a strong framework to remain a
free democracy, to form a central government with branches. Those branches Legislative
– Executive – Judicial. The plan
was unveiled September 1787.
Study your Constitution; pray
for our country.

meeting was hosted by Mary
Ann Umbarger in her home. Ten
members and one guest, Ally

member gave an account of her
most embarrassing moment.
We all had a good laugh over the
stories. The mystery gift was
won by Pat Mosher, a cosmetic
bag that Mary Ann had made.
Becky King received a garden
frog, table cloth, photo book
and note paper. The ideas for
our 100 year anniversary were
discussed. A committee was
formed for a possible float during the Anderson County Fair
parade. Hilda Lankard talked
about Glenda Tastoves trip to
Canada. The September meeting will be hosted by Rose Mary
Turner and Phyllis Callahan.
Mary Ann presented everyone
with a hostess gift of two potholders that she had made, once
again demonstrating her wonderful talents.
