THE ANDERSON COUNTY REVIEW
GARNETT Despite heavy
criticism within elements of
the party, Republicans in the
2nd Congressional District
picked Steve Watkins out of
a field of seven contenders to
face Democrat Paul Davis in
Novembers general election.
Now,
Second
District
Republican leaders are trying to decide
what
level

support
theyll give
him after a
Sunday night
conference
call to discuss
their options.
Watkins
Watkins
defeated runner-up 12th
District State Senator Caryn
Tyson 19,753-17,499 in unofficial
totals released Tuesday night.
The statewide vote will be finalized and rendered official this
Friday, when mail ballots are
counted and provisional ballots
qualified.
The two led the field decisively, with only 5th District
State Representative Kevin
Jones also tallying in five digits
with 12,033.
Davis, the Democrat nominee, was unopposed in the primary.
Watkins was under heavy
fire in the waning weeks of
the primary campaign after it
was revealed he had virtually no voting history either in
Kansas or other states in which
hed lived. Various statements
hed previously made regarding taxation and abortion were
also criticized by conservative
Republicans, who also questioned a political action committee organized by and predominately funded by Watkins
father. A mailer circulated by
Watkins campaign also used
a photo of President Donald
Trump, which some said insinuated an endorsement from
the president when no such
endorsement had been made.

LOIRE VALLEY, FRANCE A French
motorcyclist and his fiance touring
America on a 1918 World War I-era
Harley Davidson made a stop-off in
Garnett last week, a short rest from
their cross country tribute to the
American soldiers who helped defend
France on the 100th anniversary of the
end of the war.
Christophe de Goulaine, his mechanic Pierre Lauvergeat and Goulaines
fianc Anais Auduc started their 5,600
mile three-month journey in Mobile,
Ala., on June 21. They ventured to
parts of the famed trans-America Route
66 enroute to San Diego, Calif., with
Goulaine and Lauvergeat riding the
classic and near-original Harley with
its added side car and Auduc driving a van as a chase vehicle. With
the journey coined Operation Twin
Links, they took a side trip to Kansas
City to be interviewed for a video for

the National World War I Museum
(see Facebook, search Twin Links),
and their south route back to Route
66 brought them through Garnett on
Wednesday.
Goulaines
ancestor
French
Huguenot Capt. Rene de Goulaine de
Laudonniere, came to America in the
16th century seeking potential colony
sites and founded Fort Caroline on the
St. Johns River in what is now Duval
County, Fla. An early stop on the Twin
Links excursion took them to recreation of the original fort (the original
was sacked by the Spanish soon after
its founding) and a special welcome
home ceremony at the Fort Caroline
National Memorial by locals and members of the U.S. National Parks Service.
Goulaine said the Harley was a barn
find he made 10 years ago its V2 four
stroke, 17 hp engine still in original
condition. It took Lauvergeat nine
months and great pains to make it
operational again. Goulaine said he
daydreamed at the time that in a short
decade the bike would be a century old,
and he would take it on a cross country
tour of America as a way of saying
thanks.
Goulaine grew up near his ancestral
estate, located in western France in the
Loire Valley near the city of Nantes
and the harbor of Saint-Nazaire, which
was a major arrival point for U.S. soldiers after the U.S. entered the war in
1917. With a deep sense of history and
gratitude for the sacrifices of American
soldiers for his country and motivated
by the motorcycle produced on the
anniversary of the wars end, Goulaine
made his daydream trip a reality earlier this summer.
Harley Davidson made about 16,000
of the 1918 Model 18J, with most of those
purchased by the U.S. military and sent
to Europe for the war effort. Goulaine
pointed out much of the motorcycle is
original, from the engine to the metalwork to the seat that he believes once
carried an American soldier.
The soldier who came into France
with this motorcycle sat on this saddle,
Goulaine says in the WWI Museum
video. Its a real honor for me to ride
this motorcycle.

Dont give up on the local 2018 corn crop yet, ag agent says
Ag agent says corn crop
not yet a loss; recent rains

BY DANE HICKS

THE ANDERSON COUNTY REVIEW
GARNETT Though dry weather has
punctuated the 2018 corn and soybean
crop, spotty recent rains and a wetter
July is giving some hope for the rest of
the growing season.
Frontier District Extension Agent
Ryan Schaub said county wide the crop
conditions were hit and miss, depending on the spotty nature of the summers rainfall.
I believe we will see some 170+
bushel corn in some parts of the county, Schaub said, while others will
struggle to make 65-70 bushel. Weve
seen quite a bit of corn cut for silage this
year, since were short on grass and hay
for livestock this coming winter.
From the sounds of things some
corn will be ready to cut in the next
week-and-a half or so.
Mary Knapp, with the Weather Data
Library at Kansas State University,
said July totals for rainfall in Anderson
County averaged 6.56 inches among its
three reporting stations, with one area
recording over 7 inches for the month.
Normal July rainfall for the county is
4.3 inches. The 16 inches of rain the
countys had for the year so far in 2018 is
substantially behind our 21-inch norm.
Schaub said a July 28 rain and nearly
an inch of rain that fell in some places
last week may have given a reprieve to
the areas soybean crop, which would
regularly be set for harvest around
October.
The beans are still on hold, he said.
Im not ready to write them off just yet.

Democrats and Republicans
in Anderson County followed
suit to statewide voter action
in August 7s contest for governor, with Democrats picking their nominee by a wide
margin and Republicans slicing their own election to bare
double digits.
Local Democrats gave Laura
Kelly 169 votes with Josh Svaty
and Carl Brewer a distant second with 39 votes each. Kelly
won the state Democratic nomination with 52 percent of the
vote to Brewers 20 percent.
Republicans, who turned
out in far larger numbers
in Anderson County, picked
Secretary of State Kris Kobach
with 393 votes but brought
Governor Jeff Colyer within a
slight margin at 382.
Although Kobachs campaign has said it will begin to
run for the November general election as though the vote
is finalized, the actual vote
wont be certified as official
until mailed ballots and provisional ballots from across the
state are counted for an official
total.

The large number of
Republicans in the 2nd

statewide led offiicials to
expect high voter turnout.
Anderson County saw a
bump in election turnout as
well. Anderson County Clerk
Julie Heck said 22.49 percent
of the countys registered
voters cast ballots in the
Democrat and Republican
primaries. The figure was
about 16 percent in the 2016

Republican voters in
Anderson County would
have selected Tyson as the

margin of support with 363
votes compared to 283 for

JULY 14, 1966 – AUGUST 9, 2018
Joel Christopher Mersmann
Died August 9, 2018, at the age
of 52. He died peacefully, in his
sleep at his home in Denver,
Colorado. Joel was loved and
will be missed terribly by his
family and
literally
hundreds of
friends from
St. Louis to
Denver, and
across
the
country.
Joel was
born
in
Mersmann
Kansas City,
Missouri,
July 14, 1966. He attended De
Smet Jesuit High School, in St.
Louis, Missouri; and University

an incredibly kind and caring individual who would do
anything for a friend. Joel was
honored as one of 12 Men for
Others in his senior class at De
Smet High School, and at graduation in 1984, he was recognized by his fellow classmates
as the one that most exemplified the brotherhood and spirit
of De Smet. Joel was renowned
amongst his many friends and
could often be found surrounded by them celebrating life in
St. Louis. Several years ago,
Joel decided to return to Denver
and the mountains, which hold
a special place in his and his
families hearts. Not surprisingly, it was no time before hed
made dozens of new friends and
was surrounded by them in the
Mile High City. His family is
thankful to Joels many friends
for their expressions of love of
Joel and support for all of us.

REMEMBRANCES
Thank you
To Anderson County Voters:
Thank you for your vote and support
in my campaign for 5th District State
Representative. It was a tough campaign with only 180 vote difference
to bring my opponent to a win in the
primary. The best part of campaigning
is visiting with the voters and listening to their concerns. There
are so many wonderful people I met and talked with during this
journey of my campaign. Thanks to all who supported my run
for Kansas State Representative.

THE ANDERSON COUNTY REVIEW Tuesday, August 14, 2018
Media: Sauce for goose
isnt sauce for the gander
One of the definitions of Fake News, a term
that more and more rankles the purveyors of
my profession, is continually unfair differences
in how separate sides of the political debate are
treated by the American press. We saw another
example in Lawrence last weekend.
The question, as it comes along from just
about every use of the word Alt-Right (skinheads, Nazis, etc.) is why the media consistently foists the actions of crazy Alt-Righters
on Republican politicians, but leaves leftist
socialist crazies completely out of the realm of
accountability for Democrats either holding or
running for office?
all
…it was clear the Republicans
across the country
voice of freedom had to go on the
record
regarding
had little to do with that gaggle of kooks
trying to pick a fight
art and everything in the streets of
Charlottesville, Va.,
to do with yelling at where a woman was
killed when an Altflag lovers to get the Right crazy plowed
his car into a group
f— out of our town. of counter protestors. The media
wanted to make sure they gave Republican politicians ample opportunity to shoot themselves
in the foot over the tragedy, hoping for a sound
byte that might be deemed not sensitive enough
aimed no doubt at further confirming the
narrative that Republicans are just oppressive,
mean white guys, like President Trump.
A dozen or so Defend the Flag marchers
(for those of us keeping track, these are the
folks who like the American flag and dont like
the idea of seeing it defaced as an art project
and flown over a University of Kansas museum)
planned to pay tribute to a community safety
fair, made up of firemen, first responders and
police, and then march up Massachusetts Street
to voice their support for the flag.
But they were mobbed by hundreds of counter protesters wearing Art is the voice of freedom t-shirts, which they no doubt had to pull
over their heads gently so as not to catch on a
lip or eyebrow piercing. From video shot at the
event, it was clear the voice of freedom had

little to do with art and everything to do with
yelling at flag lovers to get the f— out of our
town.
So much for tolerance and freedom of expression, long held bastions of liberal idealism.
Its not that anyones surprised the real
attacks on our rights and on civil discourse
in the country now comes from the Left the
Trump era has pretty much seen that fact illustrated in spades as Trump protestors have set
fire to American cities, started campaign brawls
and hooked up with bona fide socialists to fill
their elected campaign posts. The surprise is
that the media doesnt force Democrat politicians to account for the actions of the Alt-Left
in the same way they attempt to hose down
Republicans with the stigma of the Alt-Right.
Presently in fact, the Democratic Socialists of
America is claiming a surge in memberships as
leftists search out some way to continue hating
President Trump, thinking the crazier you act
the more successful youre likely to be.
Whats surprising is that with the hubbub
at Lawrence, no one in the media has asked
Democrat gubernatorial candidate Laura Kelly
or 2nd District Congressional contender Paul
Davis if they condone that vulgarity and incivility and the assault on the First Amendment
Rights for conservatives. At least as of Monday,
not a single Democrat office holder or contender
had been asked to publicly condemn the treatment of the flag marchers by the Lawrence mob.
How unfortunate that the press, like the kooks
on the modern American political extremes
has sacrificed its credibility in such a way.

The other night I was in a drinking establishment in Garnett talking to a person. We were
talking about politics and local political things
and what was going on. Then the bar maid came
up and told him to get out and dont ever come
back. I just wonder what has happend to freedom of speech in this town?
Say what you want about the new city manager,
but the day of that big storm several days ago
I saw him in his shirt and tie up to his right
elbow in one of the clogged storm water drains
out in front of the Country Mart Grocery Store.
Now, thats something we havent seen in quite
a while, agreed?
Ive been watching whats been said about the
city staff and the city commissioners the past
few weeks in the Phone Forum, and Im won-
dering just whats going on down there. People
are apparenlty pairing off and choosing sides in
some big cat fight and theyre calling the Phone
Forum to try to get their side out there. Makes me
wonder just whats going on down there. Thank
you.
Now that theyve got the new highway up on
59 done and it looks so pretty and new, I really
notice all the cracks in the roads in the City of
Garnett. Looking east from the median area of
Fourth Street you can see nearly all the way to
the Catholic church, and the road is so cracked
and fractured it looks like it could just start flaking off in great big chunks. One of those things
we dont think much about because we drive on
it day in and day out, but to a newcomer to our
community it must really stand out I bet.

Print-your-own gun is no bigger threat
Theres great anguish over one groups
move to publish detailed plans for printing
parts to make a gun or guns with 3-D printers.
The government is set to allow that to happen
this week, having lost a couple of cases in
court. Liberals, led by New York Sen. Chuck
Schumer, are aghast, demanding action to
block the Internet site.
Despite the cries of horror, its likely the
plans will be published. Backers say theyve

though, regardless of how
you feel about
guns, you should know its next to impossible
to suppress this kind of technology or the
information behind it. Suppose gun-control
forces did manage to make these plans illegal.
Theyre already out there.
That means that the bad guys, criminals,
terrorists and nut cases who might actually
GUEST COMMENTARY

use them for evil purposes, probably already
have a set of the plans. If these are made illegal, itll only mean that the common citizen
you and me will have no access to them.
But what do we care? We werent going to
print and sell 3-D guns anyway.
You cannot put the genie back in the bottle.
Like the knowledge needed to design nuclear
weapons, these plans are published. People
have them. Some of them are bad guys.
Humans have a strong strain of belief that
making something illegal will make it go a
way. That has worked well in the 1920s War
on Alcohol and the 20th-21st century War on
Drugs, hasnt it?
But still we persist in believing that we
have only to pass a law to make something
disappear.
It just aint so.
In things such as drugs, alcohol and illegal
guns, it seems, humans hew closely to the laws
of supply and demand. Making something illegal does nothing to reduce demand, however.
Just look whats happened since we made it
illegal to enter this country without permission.
Its pure economics. The U.S. has the jobs
and the way of life everyone wants. People are
willing to risk literally everything to come
here. What do they care that they are breaking
the law? What will we do, send them home?
At the same time, having those plans on the
Internet wont make much difference in our
lives. There likely are too many guns out there
already. A few more will do no more harm.
Just as unleashing concealed carry did not
lead to a slew of gun deaths, distributing these
plans wont lead to a new era of crime or shootings. Gun lovers will want to keep their wellmade steel originals. Criminals dont much
care what they get as long as they dont pay
much and it cant be traced, to them, at least.
But dont tell anyone who believes in gun
control, because their emotions tell them it
will work.

of the racism
charge is the
obvious disparities
in
the numbers.
Blacks are 13 percent of the population, yet
they account for 38 percent of state prisoners,
and for more than roughly 30 percent of fatal
police shootings.
The driver for mass incarceration, we are
…the contention
that U.S. law
enforcement is a
product of racial
hatred is a
paranoid lie.
NATIONAL COMMENTARY
RICH LOWRY, King Features Syndicate
always told, is a racist war on drugs. But this
is a myth. In his book Locked In, John Pfaff
notes that at its height in 1990, the share of
state prisoners serving time for drugs was just
22 percent. The proportion fell to less than 16
percent in 2014. So you could release all drug
offenders and still leave mass incarceration
intact. And you wouldnt just be releasing
black prisoners — 33 percent of white inmates
in state prisons are drug offenders,
It is true that the incarceration rates for
drug offenses are much higher for blacks. This
may be a product of enforcement bias, or other
factors such as whites are more prone to use
private, as opposed to open-air, drug markets.
The biggest reason for the overall disparity in
incarceration is different rates of offending.
Blacks account for about 50 percent of homicides. Its not that the police are simply making up these crimes. The numbers for violent
crime accord with reports from crime victims
of the race of their assailants.
The same applies to police shootings.
Joseph Cesario, a professor of psychology at
Michigan State University, writes that the
differences in involvement in criminal situations between black and white citizens fully
explains the population-level disparity in fatal
police shootings.
Now, its entirely fair to argue that different rates of offending are a function of the
vestiges of racism, and that it is urgent to
pursue criminal justice reform given how the
status quo affects black families and communities. But the idea that we are living in a latter-day apartheid South Africa, with a system
designed to jail and immiserate blacks out of
sheer maliciousness, is contemptible, poisonous and wrong.
It is telling that Elizabeth Warren is going
there. There are two reasons. One is that she
has a Bernie Sanders problem: She is a white
politician who has overwhelmingly devoted
herself to economic issues. She needs to play
identity politics catch-up. Two, in reaction to
Donald Trump, the left is embracing a sweeping indictment of America as undemocratic
and racist at the core.
Warrens performance shows that the party
is prepared to consider no critique of America
too radical or out of bounds.

recorded in Greece, approximately 400BC. This Classical
Greek garden was a small plot
of mixed green grasses and
weeds. These were mingled
with wildflower seeds, thus
resembling a miniature natural
meadow.
For centuries before the invention of the lawn mower, grass
went uncut. A tall, free growing, weedy plot of green was
regarded as a thing of beauty.
In the 1800s, closely cropped
turfs became very popular.
Lawn mowing as per say was
often achieved by flocks of grazing sheep. The sheep though,
were soon to be replaced by a
mechanical,man-made contrivance in 1830,what we now know
as a lawn mower.

been filed in this court alleging that the child
named above is a Child in Need of Care. The
Court may find that the parents are unfit by
reason or conduct or condition which renders
the parents unable to care properly for a child,
