BRIGGS..
LOCHEMAN
JUNE 10, 1941
Word has been received that
June Loughridge Locheman,
who was born to Marle
Loughridge and Cleora Klus
Loughridge Warren on June
10, 1941, has passed away.
She is survived by her son
of Germany and her daughter
of Chicago, IL.
June
graduated
from

class of 1958. She was very
active in music in Garnett
High School by participating
in Girls Glee Club, Freshman

Clarinet in the Garnett High
School Band, etc.
June graduated from Coe
College, Cedar Rapids, Iowa, in
1961.
June came from a very
musical family and was a very
talented musician. She performed opera in concerts in
Germany, New York City and
Garnett, KS.
June was very active in
the Garnett United Methodist

until it disbanded, and more
recently, she played the piano
at the First Baptist Church

One of those terms is that he

Briggs was charged in connection with recorded comments he made to officers, saying at one point they would

attempt to lure officers onto
his property at Kincaid. Briggs
said he never intended the

Dismissal of the felony

in comments made by at least
one officer called as a witness

Briggs would make good on

Get on the narrow road
Jesus tells us in
Matthew 7:14, Small is
the gate and narrow the
road that leads to life, and
only a few find it. Once
you choose to take this
road it is a life long journey. When we pass from
this world we will be at the
end of our journey. What
then, what awaits us? I
have given considerable
thought to this and there
can only be one conclusion. We shall see God and we
will begin to understand what
eternity and the kingdom of God
will mean to us.
Life down this narrow road is
a rough journey. However there
seems to be a discernible peace
in our life in spite of the difficulties involved living and understanding Gods kingdom. John
the Baptist introduces us to the
kingdom with his message to the
people. Repent for the kingdom
of heaven is near. In order for us
to get off the broad road and onto
the narrow road it is necessary
for us to repent. The broad road
emphasizes self at the expense of
others. One of the toughest things
to do is to repent of our sins and
to mean it. If you are repenting
in your mind without your heart
being changed you are doomed
for failure. Jesus tells us many
people take the broad road. They
are so caught up in their own

life and the benefits they see in
front of them repentance does not
come. I said I believe when we get
to the end of our life we will begin
to understand what eternity will
mean for us.
In Revelation 21 we are told
there will be a new heaven and
a new earth. There will be no
more death or mourning or crying or pain for the old order of
things, the broad road, will have
passed away. Also in John 14
Jesus tells his disciples he is
going away to prepare a place
for them. Finally in Revelation
22 God tells us he will remove
the curse he put on the earth
and its inhabitants. God does not
want us to miss all these things.
Heaven is as much of a reality as
Jesus life here on earth was. We
must begin to think in terms of
eternity not the here and now and
the only way to do that is to get on
the narrow road.

OPINION
A mugshot of Americas rage
Lawyers often debate whether it is better
for your client to smile or not smile in a mugshot. Some believe a smile conveys a lack of
contrition while others view a frown as looking
guilty. In the first mugshot of a former American
president, Trump rejected both the carefree
smile and the disapproving frown and went
with a seething scowl. It is a mugshot that unfortunately will resonate with both extremes in our
political system.
In Christopher Marlowes Doctor Faustus, the
devil Mephistopheles (Marlowe spells the name
Mephistophilis) shows him Helen of Troy,
the face who launched a thousand ships that
released a firestorm.
The Trump scowl is likely to launch millions
of ships all in the wrong directions.
For Fulton County District Attorney Fani
Willis and many of her supporters, the mugshot
clearly holds a type of trophy kill appeal worthy
of framing and mounting on a wall. This is one
of those moments long portrayed on T-shirts and
other merchandise for many on the left.
For many Trump supporters, it is a moment of
gratuitous insult of a president who is now being
prosecuted in four different states just before an
election where he is the leading Republican candidate. For the most extreme, it will be portrayed
as a virtual declaration of war, proof that the
establishment will use every means to prevent
another 2016 populist victory.
It is noteworthy that, like his critics, Trump
is already selling merchandise with the mugshot
and a Never Surrender slogan.
In that way, the mugshot will be the rallying
cry at both extremes in our political system.
For that reason, I believe the mugshot was
a mistake, an inflammatory moment wisely
avoided in New York by another Democratic
prosecutor. It is entirely unnecessary for the
most recognized face in the United States.
The fact, however, is that many on both sides
relish the rage. I have previously said that the
most unnerving fact of what I have called the
age of rage is that people secretly enjoy it. Rage
is addictive. It allows people to say and do things
that they would ordinarily avoid in public. It is
a license to hate blindly and excuse all means
to achieve an endI think that the Georgia, New
York, and the federal January 6th indictments
are unwarranted and threaten free speech.
Moreover, it is valid for many to object that
these prosecutions could have occurred years
ago, but were launched just before the presidential election so that Trump will be running from
court to court through the general election.
GUEST COMMENTARY
JONATHAN TURLEY GEORGE WASH. UNIV.
It is also true that the Mar-a-Lago case is more
serious and more substantive and that threat
is continuing to grow as a threat for Trump as
witnesses change their testimony and Trump
aides confirm key prosecution claims.
Likewise, while I believe the case against
Trump in the Georgia indictment is weak, there
are defendants in that case that face stronger
claims on specific election-related crimes.
Of course, in an age of rage, reason is the first
to die. We cannot allow that to happen; we cannot allow rage addicts to drive our political or
legal processes.
We have the greatest legal system in the world.
We will sort out these issues from the criminalization of political speech to the claim that
Trump can be barred from the ballot even without a charge or conviction.
Courts are likely to divide on these issues.
However, we remain a nation of laws. That
tradition takes a certain leap of faith. We do not
support that system only when we prevail. That
is the view of court packers like Sen. Elizabeth
Warren, D-Mass. and Rep. Alexandria OcasioCortez, D-N.,Y. Notably, Ocasio-Cortez even said
that she does not understand why we need a
Supreme Court.
Even law professors and legal commentators
have called our Constitution trash and called
for the country to reclaim America from constitutionalism. That is the greatest danger of
these times: that our deep divisions will cause
us to lose faith in our defining values and in each
other. The Trump mugshot captures a defining
moment for our country. It will define us going
forward.
I believe that it is paramount that appellate
courts consider the merits of the free speech

What do Kansas Democrats want

Women are being erased in Afghanistan.
NATIONAL COMMENTARY
So says a recent article on the Daily Chatter
website, our foreign news partner.
The Taliban retook the country two years
ago this week after the botched U.S. withdrawal by the Biden administration. Today,
Afghan women cannot be seen in public without a male escort, are denied education, and
have absolutely no rights whatsoever.
Thats terrible, of course, but the blame
lies with the Afghan people themselves, who
flat-out refused to fight for their own freedom. America gave them a 20-year window
to embrace a civil society. Collectively, the

the vast majority of violent crime victims in
New York are black.
People often blame outside forces like the
media, corruption, and money for political
ineptitude. But its the voters and citizens
who are really at fault.
Thousands of American service people
were killed or wounded in Afghanistan, trying to give those folks a better future.
The Afghans didnt want it, just as millions
of Americans dont really care about safety in
their own neighborhoods.
I know that sounds inexplicable, but stupidity and political fanaticism can bring down
any society, including ours.
All Americans should heed this vivid warning. San Francisco, LA, Chicago, and New
York are in atrocious shape. The progressive
movement and voter apathy are the reason.
The adage is People will eventually get
what they deserve.
Its true.

How boys with testosterone are taking back America
Footage went viral last week of 12-year-old
Jaiden Rodriguez of Colorado Springs defying a catty school administrators orders to
remove a backpack with a Gadsden Flag patch
or be barred from going back to class. Jaiden,
sporting a button-down shirt beneath his camouflage backpack, a sharp haircut, and a
defiant smirk, can be seen patiently listening
to his mom shut down the administrators
contrived excuses.
The contrast between the petty administrator and the middle-schooler couldnt be more
stark. One represents a class of power-hungry
HOA president types whose greatest joy in the
world is to use the government to make you do
what they want you to, often because no one
else in their lives will listen to them. These
are the type of people who would track you
down in the grocery store during the era of
Covid mandates and shame you for not strapping toxic paper cancer receptacles to your
face. They are the Fani Willises of the world,
begging to be relevant and happy to bring the
republic down in order to fulfill their girlboss
fantasies. They might have an autistic teenager arrested because they get their feelings
hurt. They would definitely livestream their
reluctant childs transgender journey for
likes.
The other represents the people who not
only reject these self-appointed microaggression police, but smile confidently while doing
it. They may even smile in the mugshots they
have to take when the first class of people
inevitably come after them. They will fight
the regime with mockery, self-confidence,
and, above all, the fact that they really dont
care what those people say theyre supposed

to think or say or do. This, obviously, drives
the first group of people crazy.
The second group includes guys like
Marcus Schroeder, another respectful, cleancut young man who smiled in the faces of his
bureaucratic bullies. Schroeder was arrested
for publicly reading scripture in protest of a
drag queen event for children (yes, you read
that right). Instead of drooling out a shame-induced apology, he responded by showing up to
a city council meeting and defiantly preaching the Gospel.
Of course, the categories arent always
neatly broken down by sex. But, as you might
have noticed, theres a large population of
intolerable women running the asylum.
(If youre wondering why, read this book.)
Women are overwhelmingly overrepresented
in HR, administrative services, education,
community services, and social work, sectors
with higher rates of petty rules to enforce. As
you also may have noticed, men especially
young ones have a greater tendency to chal-
lenge those rules.
Consider how men reacted to the horrible
Covid theater rituals compared to women. A
previous meta-analysis concluded that women
were 50% more likely than men to engage
in nonpharmaceutical protective behaviors
(e.g., mask-wearing) during epidemics and
pandemics, and in the COVID-19 pandemic,
women report wearing masks more often than
men, according to a 2020 study published by
the National Institutes of Health. Another
study, sampled from eight major Western
countries, found that women were more likely to agree to levy draconian policing measures like closing schools, using cellular
phones to trace peoples movements, and
prohibiting meetings of two or more people
on their neighbors, as well as even forcing
Covid-infected people into quarantine away
from home, whatever kind of government
prison thats a euphemism for.
Dudes are leaning more conservative, too.
According to the federal Monitor The Future
survey, 12th-grade boys are nearly twice as
likely to identify as conservative versus liberal. Among senior girls, the trend was the
opposite.
Why are young boys being turned off by
left-wing ideology? Could it be theyre sick of
being told that their masculinity is oppressive
and evil, that women run the world, and that
the best boys are actually girls? Are they
maybe getting sick of having their thoughts
and actions dictated by babysitters in middle
management?
In a world run by left-wing backpack patch
police, the boys get a rough shake. Everything

Yes, 11 years in a row.
Is Johnsons support of defund the police
initiatives a core interest among Kansas voters?
Does this union activist somehow join with our
Democratic Governors marketing message of
supposed middle of the road politics?
Or does this choice reveal the Democratic
partys hand, where they know they can move
forward with the wholesale abandonment of
anything of interest to rural Kansans?
What are Democrats really wanting for the
future of Kansas?

the Kansas Farm Bureau Casten
Fellows. Was I apprehensive?
Absolutely. Was I nervous? You
bet. However, after a quick check
with my family it was clear this
was a chance of a lifetime and
something I could not pass up.
Boy, am I glad I took that leap of
faith because my perspective of
the world will never be the same.
I am not sure I ever completely
wrapped my head around the fact
I was halfway around the world
from my home and my family. In
some ways Uganda and Tanzania
seemed so different but, in many
ways, things seemed the same.
On one hand I was in a land of
banana trees and coffee plants;
I saw giraffes casually walking
through farm fields and monkeys
dancing across the roof of my
cabin. On the other hand, I talked
to farmers with the same basic
concerns I have prices and
weather. I met some of the most
gracious, kind and caring people
I have ever met. In many ways
our worlds seemed very familiar.
I have been asked to describe
the trip and often I feel my explanation is very inadequate. What
I experienced was so big that
words and pictures are lacking.
I do know, without a doubt, that
my understanding of the world
has grown immensely. I only
wish that all of you could have
experienced the same things I
did. If you ever get that opportunity, make sure you take it. Your
world will be richer because of
the challenge you accepted.
Here is the great thing, you
will have that chance. Next
year the Casten Fellows will be
asking for applications. Do we
know where they are going? No,
but does it really matter? In my
humble opinion, no. Like I said,
Africa is somewhere I had not
really ever thought about going
and now I am very thankful I
had that chance. Take that challenge and stretch yourself. Will
it always be comfortable? Again,
the answer is no. There were
times that the trip took me far
out of my comfort zone and that
is a good thing. Real growth can-
not happen if we are comfortable.
It is tough to be gone for two
weeks, I will not lie. I missed
home, but the reward was more
than worth it. I came away with
both an appreciation of Africa
and its people but also for what
I have at home, my family and
everything I have been blessed
with in my life. If you at all think
going abroad would be interesting or you are looking for a true
growth experience, I highly recommend you apply for the Casten
Fellows next year.
Not only will you benefit personally from the trip, but our
organization will also reap the
rewards of having members who
better understand the world we
live in. Maybe travel to Africa
wasnt on my bucket list before,
but I promise that list is much
longer now.

In the grip of a panic attack,
she nearly collides with Jakea

carrying 120,000 honeybees in
the back of her pickup truck.
Charmed by Jakes sincere
interest in her bees and seeking to rescue him from his
toxic home life, Alice surprises
herself by inviting Jake to her
farm.
And then theres Harry, a
twenty-four-year-old
with
debilitating social anxiety who
is desperate for work. When he
applies to Alices ad for parttime farm help, hes shocked to
find himself hired. As an unexpected friendship blossoms
among Alice, Jake, and Harry,

HOLMAN…
FROM PAGE 1
He said pursuing a full time
job and solo performance work
as well as fronting a full fivepiece band and being dad
to a new baby with his wife
Amanda made for a busy schedule, but the sauce for his performances is always the people.
The thing I enjoy about the
most playing music is traveling
to different places and meeting
different people and hearing
their stories, he said. And
we have a great band Im
fortunate enough to have some
really great musicians behind
me and theyre just really great
guys to hang with.
Musically for Holman, country always led the way.
In the early days learning
music, I always gravitated
toward the music of the guys
playing Texas Country and Red
Dirt, he said.
But you cant play if you
dont have a crowd. The people
who have helped me the most
along the way are the live music
lovers of Anderson County. I
would have never played outside of the county lines if it
werent for folks like the Scipio
Supper Club, the boys from
Greeley, Tradewinds, Ricks
Halfway House, and many
others from this area. I appreciate them listening through
the years when I was starting
to play music. Especially the
years it didnt sound the best.
Yet, the fans continue to come
see the band and I when we
play in the area.
Offstage Holman likes cars
and dirt.
In my free time – outside
of playing music with the
Haymakers and working,
I enjoy racing dirt modifieds
at Humboldt Speedway and
spending time with my wife
Amanda, and our son Whitten,
said Trevor. Thats right. This
local boy has a following, not
only in red dirt music, but on
the dirt track down south.
Upcoming concerts for
Trevor Holman and the
Haymakers include September
29 at the Kansas Speedway with
Travis Marvin. On September
30th you can find the band performing at the Kincaid Fair.

Food Safety Education
Community health boosts personal health, says K-State expert
Month: Food thermometers
are a must-have in the kitchen
MANHATTAN, Kan. Where
food safety is concerned, a
food thermometer is kind of
like the swiss army knife. Its
a must-have, multi-use tool in
the kitchen.
It is one of the most important tools consumers can use to
know when food is cooked properly for safe consumption,
said Kansas State University
food scientist Karen Blakeslee.
Its useful for meat items, casseroles and even baked goods.
Using a subjective method
such as ground meat color
can be misleading and lead to
foodborne illness.
Also, it can help with
(assuring) the quality of a food
item and reduce over-cooking.
Blakeslee is urging consumers to buy a food thermometer or calibrate their current
thermometer during Food
Safety Education Month in
September. The month is recognized in the United States to
promote safe food handling and
educate consumers about ways
to prevent foodborne illness.
For consumers who need
to buy a food thermometer,
Blakeslee recommends the digital type.
Digital food thermometers
read the temperature at the
tip of the temperature probe,
Blakeslee said. They also read
temperature quickly, and come
in a simple handheld design
or with other features, such as
the ability to insert the probe
into the food and leave it in
during cooking. You can set the
thermometer to indicate when
the final temperature has been
reached.
Some digital thermometers
can even connect to a mobile
device. More information the
types of food thermometers
available is available online
from the U.S. Food Safety and
Inspection Service.
Consumers who already
own a food thermometer can
calibrate them routinely to
make sure they are still giving
accurate readings.
The best method is to calibrate your thermometer using
ice water and boiling water to
check cold and hot readings,
Blakeslee said. Dial faced
thermometers can be adjusted
if needed. Digital thermometers should be replaced unless
it came with instructions on
how to adjust.
A guide on adjusting food
thermometers is available
online through the K-State
Research and Extension bookstore.
Along with food thermometers, place an appliance thermometer inside your refrigerator and freezer to monitor temperatures in those appliances,
Blakeslee said. These can be
helpful during a power outage
to determine the safety of your
food. Another suggestion is an
oven thermometer to know if
your oven is heating properly.
More information on appliance thermometers also is
available online from the FSIS.
Blakeslee, who also is coordinator of K-States Rapid
Response Center for food science, publishes a monthly
newsletter called You Asked It!
that provides numerous tips on
being safe and healthy. More
information is also available
from local extension offices in
Kansas.

MANHATTAN, Kan. Most
folks generally accept that
maintaining good health
includes an annual visit to the
doctor to check their heart,
teeth, ears and more.
But, says Elaine Johannes,
theres more to personal health
than some may realize.
The Robert Wood Johnson
Foundation has done quite a
bit of research over the years
that affirms that a little over
50% of our overall health is
related to the places that we
live, learn, work, play and
pray, said Johannes, the
Kansas Health Foundations
Distinguished Professor of
Community Health at Kansas
State University.
Johannes said research
indicates that being engaged in
ones communities is connected to living longer.
So, she says, we should
look for opportunities to be civically engaged, and be aware of
opportunities to volunteer and
be involved in clubs and orga-
nizations. Thats part of civic
health.
According to Johannes,
civic health reflects the opportunities people have to participate in their communities, and
can be summed up in three
areas:
Places Healthy communities have places where people
can get together formally or
informally, such as festivals in
a city park; or a library with
extended hours.
Processes Healthy communities make it easier for
citizens to have their voices
heard. Some examples: Are
voting processes easily understood? Do citizens know what
it takes to run for public office?
Can people participate in meetings in-person and online?
People In healthy communities, people get involved as
volunteers and in other roles.
People are socially engaged.
When the social capital is in
place places, processes and
people the community is
fairly strong, Johannes said.
Then, the overall health of the
people in the community goes
up. And theres research that
supports that.
The University of Wisconsin
Population Health Institute
annually
publishes
the
County Health Rankings and
Roadmaps for every county in
the United States. Johannes
said the report combines data
and evidence to support community-led efforts to improve
health equity and community
power.
The yearly report includes
links to information specific to Kansas counties, rating
each according to such health
outcomes as length of life and
quality of life; and such health
factors as adult smoking, obesity, physical activity and more.
Johannes said the 2023
report includes information
about the civic health of states
and counties. She said Kansas
is among 16 states that have
more structural barriers to
civic health.
Research shows that states
with well-resourced civic infrastructure have more civic participation, which is tied to how
well and how long we live, she
said.
Johannes, whose office
is on the K-State campus in
Manhattan, is part of the larger, statewide network of extension professionals whose job
includes supporting health in
every Kansas county.
Many of our K-State faculty
and our professionals across
the state and in extension offices are part of the universitys
community vitality work in
Kansas, she said. Those people are being trained to provide
facilitation and to convene people to talk about the important
issues of the day.
According to Johannes,
many counties have community vitality staff or specialists who can train residents on
how to serve on local committees and boards. More information is available online and
from local extension offices in
Kansas.
A longer discussion with
Johannes regarding civic
health is available on the
weekly radio program, Sound
Living, produced by K-State
Research and Extension.
K-State horticulture expert suggests dividing peonies this fall
By Maddy Rohr, K-State

MANHATTAN,
Kan.
While dividing peonies is
not required, Kansas State
University horticulture expert
Cynthia Domenghini said
doing so can increase bloom
production, reduce disease and
provide more peony plants for
the garden.
If you choose to divide your
peonies, it needs to be done
this time of year, Domenghini
said.
To start dividing peonies,
Domenghini said gardeners
should cut the stems just above
the soil surface. Next, dig up
the entire root system and
remove soil from the roots.
Divide the root clump into
small sections using a sharp
knife, Domenghini said.
Ensure each section has 3-5
buds as well as healthy roots.
The planting location
should receive sunlight at least
half the day. Dig a hole large
enough to fit the roots of the
divided peonies so the buds
will be covered by 1-2 inches of
soil.
28th Annual
POWER OF THE PAST
Plants buried too deep may
not flower, Domenghini said.
After planting, water thoroughly.
Space dwarf peonies at least
two feet apart and standard
peonies four feet apart. To protect the newly divided peonies
in cold weather, add a layer of
straw, leaves or compost after
the soil freezes.
Domenghini warns that it
may take a couple years for
divided plants to return to full
bloom productivity.
Domenghini and her colleagues in K-State's Department
of Horticulture and Natural
Resources produce a weekly
Horticulture Newsletter with
tips for maintaining home
landscapes and gardens. The
newsletter is available to view
online or can be delivered by
email each week.
Interested persons can also
send their garden and yard-related questions to Domenghini
at cdom@ksu.edu, or contact
your local K-State Research
and Extension office.
