THE ANDERSON COUNTY REVIEW
GARNETT Area residents will
celebrate the 160th anniversary of
Garnetts founding this Thursday
with free food, birthday cake, music
and displays of firefighting and emergency services equipment downtown.
The City of Garnett will host the
event which begins at 5 p.m. at the
Garnett Fire Station at 132 W. 4th
Avenue.
Everyone is invited to attend and
enjoy hamburgers, chips, drinks, and
birthday cake served by the Garnett
Volunteer Fire Department with
assistance from the Garnett City
Commission and staff, said Garnett
Community Development Director
Susan Wettstein. She said the meal is
complimentary but freewill donations
can be dropped in a fire boot at the
event with all proceeds going to the
volunteer fire department.
The shin dig is a long way from the
towns humble and almost scuttled
beginnings 160 years ago.
Town company investors led by
Louisville, Ky., physician and entrepreneur G.W. Cooper first picked
a site in the geographic center
of Anderson County about three
miles north of Welda as a site for
Garnett, but decided that site lacked
adequate spring water and other natural resources, so they picked a point
about six miles to the north just south
of the Pottawatomie. The site was
platted in 1857 and named after W.
A. Garnett, the president of the town

a signed, notarized petition signature
urging the Governor to call a special
session on Oct. 18.
During the special session, the five
will introduce a Patriots Freedom
Bill.
Lawmakers seek to introduce freedom legislation
Our constituents are demanding
that their elected Representatives
and Senators go back to Topeka for a
special session for the purpose of nullifying President Bidens executive
orders and passing additional legislation to protect the individual liberties
of Kansans and ensure that Kansans
arent being forced to take vaccines
or wear masks, the letter reads.
The draft bill prohibits vaccine
mandates and statewide stay-at-home
orders and restricts the government
from closing churches.
Lee says Kansans deserve protection.
We are living in an unprecedented
time in our nation. The government
is pushing mandates at an alarming
rate, the letter reads. From the
White House to the county courthouse, we are witnessing mandates
to vaccinate, mandates for masks,
and now we are personally watching
our friends, families, and neighbors
losing their jobs because they choose
personal liberty.
The legal issues surrounding vaccine mandates are tricky and vary
based on who is attempting to implement a mandate.
Eric Stafford, vice president of
government affairs at the Kansas
Chamber of Commerce, earlier this
year said the Chamber believes in the
right of employers to determine their
own policies for employees. He noted
that the Americans with Disabilities

Lake Garnett
Grand Prix
Revival was
one of the
only publicly
held events to
go off pretty much as
planned last year.
It was proof that despite
everything from direct lockdowns to public shaming and
paranoia, people still love
cars and at least some drivers like to go real fast.
The relatively new tradition of the Garnett Grand
Prix Revival will take to
Garnetts lake track again
this weekend with a full slate
of drivers, cars and exhibitions designed as tribute to
the Garnett sports car races
that enthralled the region
and brought drivers and fans
to Lake Garnett by the thousands some 60 years ago. As
in the seven track events that
preceded it, the 2021 Lake
Garnett Grand Prix Revival
will allow countless families and car enthusiasts the
opportunity to witness vintage race cars, classic sports
cars, and modern performance automobiles descend
on Lake Garnett Park for a
taste of local racing from
yesterday.
The Revival
has
become
one of the premier vintage and
sports car events
in the region,
with a multiday format that
includes high-performance driving displays
around the old 2.8 mile race
track, the EKAE autocross
at the Garnett Municipal
Airport, the Hagerty Revival
showcase car show in downtown Garnett, and a road tour
& cruise. Onlookers will also
get the chance to ride around
the track in one of 40-different high-performance vehicles during the Charity Rides.
The track sessions will be
diverse offering interest for
all ranges of motor enthusiasts. A multitude of speed-regulated classes will allow drivers of every experience level
to get some action behind the
wheel of their own classic
automobiles. See www.lggpr.

The woman reached
for Jesus!
WEEKLY DEVOTIONAL
Mother Teresa stands out
as one of the greatest humanitarians of the 20th century and
beyond. In spite of all of her
vast accomplishments the following quote is attributed to
her. Where is my faith-even
deep down in there is nothing, but emptiness and darkness-My God-how painful is
this unknown pain-I have no
faith-I dare not utter the words
and thoughts that crowd in
my heart and make me suffer
untold agony.
God allows us to go through
hard times so that we can learn
to truly trust him. You see,
when we do choose to trust
God-even when there is no
concrete evidence of his presence-we demonstrate real faith.
And that is a powerful witness
to anyone who sees.
In Luke 8:43-48; we read the
story of the sick woman and
Jesus. This woman had suffered from bleeding for twelve
years, and no one could heal
her. Jesus was in a crowd
of people and we are told the
crowds almost crushed him.
The woman believing that
Jesus could help her came up
behind him and touched the
edge of his cloak and immediately her bleeding stopped.
What we need to note is the
response of Jesus.
Who
touched me? Jesus asked.
BY DAVID BILDERBACK
The disciples stating the obvious said, people are crowding and pressing against you.
Jesus response was, someone
touched me; I know that power
has gone out from me. We are
told the woman came and fell
at his feet and told Jesus why
she had touched him and how
she had been healed instantly.
Jesus response, Your faith has
healed you. Go in peace.
All of us experience times
in our life like Mother Teresa
expressed. What we need to
understand is our need for
healing and push through the
clutter and litter in our life
and come as the woman did
to Jesus. We can rest assured
if we feel burdened and weary
from lifes struggles you and I
need to receive the cleansing of
the Savior. There are no limits
to the power of Jesus except
those we place on him by our
own failure to place our faith
in him. The solution to the
problem is to reach for Jesus.
Ministry on the Holiness of God.

time to take another break,

at 10:10 a.m. Kays sister
drove us to Ottawa, where
we boarded the bus at Loves

stop was at the Cracker
Barrel in Liberty, Missouri
for lunch. I noted while there
the gas price of regular gas
was $2.78. Soon we were on
our way to Iowa. The roadsides were literally covered
with blooming golden rods,
sunflowers and purple asters.
We crossed into Iowa at 3:15

soybeans are only 4-6 tall
and leaves yellow and falling.
No pods to be seen.
At 3:45 p.m. we stopped for a
short break at a nice rest area
near Osceola, Iowa.
We arrived at 4:45 p.m.
at the Cobblestone Inn in
Winterset, our home for the
next two nights.
At 5:15 p.m. we drove out to
the Henry A Wallace County

What really fascinated me
was their corn test plots.
From Yellow Dent to a variety created in 2014. This
variety set an unbelievable
world production record
of 614 bushel per acre in
Nebraska. This corn grows
over six feet tall and has 3-4

At 8:30 p.m. we returned to
our motel for a good nights
sleep, as tomorrow would be
another very busy day for us.

Henrys experience in uncovering artifacts spans 60 years.
He began in 1961 with a metal
detector. He joined the Kansas
Anthropological
Association,
a comprehensive program that
guides the amateur archeologist
in personal study and achievement. In Anderson County, he
has excavated up to 20 different
sites, mostly on private properties
under the encouragement of the
landowner who usually retains
all items found. The Historical
Society Museum is fortunate to
have a few collections.
When asked which one artifact or place has the most significance for the history of Anderson
County, he seemed reluctant to
pinpoint just one. The location of
the general store where the town
of Scipio was first located was
exciting. His work at Hyatt, one
of our many ghost towns, went
on for 3-5 years. More than half
of that time, he was able to excavate much of the city including
the hotel, blacksmith shop, school

Vikings pull away late in win over Horton
RICHMOND – It was a perfect
night for football last Friday
as the Central Heights Vikings
hosted Horton in a homecoming showdown and after trailing at halftime, the Vikings
would prevail 33-20.
Central Heights jumped on
the scoreboard first with a first
quarter touchdown to lead 7-0
heading into the second.
Horton pulled even with
around 11 minutes remaining
in the second quarter as they
pounded it in from one yard out
to knot the score at 7.
Horton would tack on a
touchdown late in the second
quarter with a minute to play
to take a 14-7 lead into intermis-
sion.
Central Heights quarterback
Tony Detwiler would break
free for a 35 yard score midway
through the third period, but
after a failed conversion the
Vikings still trailed 14-13.
Detwiler would connect up
with Baker Moore for a passing
touchdown with a minute to go
in the third, giving the Vikings
a 20-14 lead heading into the
fourth.
Horton would garner all
the momentum with a 60 yard
touchdown pass and reception
with 11 minutes left, tying the
game at 20 after their extra
point failed.
Central Heights would
regain control just a few
moments later as Detwiler
broke free for a 48 yard touchdown to give the Vikings a
27-20 lead.
After a defensive stand,
Detwiler would score his 5th
touchdown on the night, this
time from 51 yards out to give
his Vikings a 33-20 lead, which
would be the final.
Four of those scores would
come on the ground as Detwiler
amassed 264 yards on 19 carries.
Defensively Carson Wood
tallied 12 tackles, including 5.5
tackles for loss, 2 forced fumbles and 3 sacks.

early in the second quarter as

Iola responded with a 28

After a defensive stand, Iola
once again hit paydirt, this
time a 56 yard touchdown pass
put Iola up 14-7 with just under
3 minutes left in the first half.
Iola scored within the first
4 minutes of the second half to

With impending thunderstorms in the area, simply getting the races in on our home
course seemed like a long shot
an hour before the meet was
supposed to start.
Thanks to a perfect combination of cloud cover, a cool
breeze and some fantastic
preparation this week, our
kids put in some more of their
best performances of the season, Coach Troy Prossor stated.
These bests included 15
personal bests resulted in 14
individual medals with the top
highlight clearly being the 1st
place finish in the varsity boys
race by Connor Burkdoll.
Its no secret that Connor
is a fantastic runner and he
loves finding new things to
motivate himself week in and
week out. Along with his other
four teammates, the boys were
able to bring a 2nd place finish
as a group that was a nice
boost heading into the last
week of the regular season,
Prossor added.
Not to be outdone, Emma,
Taryn, Melaney, and Lily once
again paced the girls by all
placing in the top 10 finishing
a mere three points behind
a top 5 ranked team in 3A,
Prossor pointed out.
The middle schoolers were
equally impressive with a slew
of personal bests, an individual title for Hunter Johnson
(7th grade) and a 2nd place
finish by Aydan Dunbar (8th
grade).
Probably the thing that
pleased me the most about the
overall performance was the
sheer amount of grit, determination, and support they
gave each other throughout
the day, said Prossor

The Westphalia second graders have been reading and learning
about pets and what it takes to be a good pet owner. They wrapped
up their study on Friday, October 1st with a pet show. Each student
told and answered questions about their pet and received a special
award. The judges for the pet show were the seventh and eighth
grade students. The second graders said they had lots of fun learning about pets and participating in the pet show. Pictured from left

Each of the Westphalia Junior
high science classes begin
their year learning about the
Engineering Design Process.
And each of the classes has
a concluding project to show
what they have learned. In sixth
grade, we learn about how
bicycle helmets are designed
to protect the human head
from injury should a person
fall off their bike. The students
are then tasked with building
a protective device that keeps
an egg from cracking when
dropped from three different
heights. Most of the students
designs survived 2 out of the
three drops. Which is very
impressive. This year Carlys
Egg Helmet was the only one
to survive the dreaded third
drop. Congratulations Carly on
the winning design! Pictured

cinations. The federal Equal
Employment
Opportunity
Commission does the same.
But many legal scholars
say having the federal government mandate that employers
require vaccinations is a constitutional violation.
State law requires 2/3rds
of legislature to force
Governors hand
State law requires the governor to call a special session
when properly petitioned by
the legislature. And a petition signed by two-thirds
of the legislature forces her
hand, according to the Kansas
Constitution.
Republicans make up
two-thirds of the Kansas
Legislature, but that doesnt
mean the petition is a slam
dunk. Special sessions are rare
in Kansas. Since 1972, only
six occurred, all called by the
Governor.
The letter requests that the
Governor call a special session
even if the petition falls short
of the necessary signatures.
Released late on a Sunday
evening, it appears the effort
gained immediate steam.
Within a few hours of Lee
announcing the letter on social
media, her post garnered more
than 90 shares on Facebook.
She says thats because
Kansans are hurting.
They are losing jobs, and
this is serious, she said.
Tyranny is running amuck in
our country and in our state,
and we in Kansas know better.
Our constituents deserve to be
protected. They deserve their
personal choices be protected,
including their healthcare.

Committee will examine
federal overreach on vaccine
mandate
The petition reached lawmakers on Sunday night. The following morning, the Legislative
Coordinating Council met and
authorized an 11-person special committee on government
overreach.
Senate
President
Ty
Masterson,
a
Wichita
Republican, said Mondays
meeting was not a response to
the letter.
We have some new members that are energetic. Theres
a lack of understanding Even
if we had a special session, we
would have committee meetings. Its a little bit cart-infront-of-the horse, Masterson
said.
Masterson will appoint five
Senators to the committee, and
2×2 Good
Shepherd
the Kansas House Speaker Ron
Ryckman will appoint six state
representatives to the committee. Members will study federal
overreach, including the Biden
administrations announced
vaccine mandate.
Everybody wants to help
our citizens right nowto
make sure that these overreaching mandates can be handled lawfully, Ryckman said.
I like this approach.
Time runs short for
employees opposed to taking
COVID vaccine
Thompson, a Shawnee
Republican, is one of the lawmakers spearheading the petition for a special session.
This call for action has
reached a crescendo with
President Bidens executive
order to mandate vaccines,
Thompson wrote in a Facebook

post. For many, time is running out as their deadline for
vaccination approaches.
He also supports the LCCs
efforts.
I fully support this effort
and believe it will set the
framework for legislation that
is desperately needed to protect Kansans, his Facebook
post reads. Those who wish
to get the vaccine already have
access to it. But those who are
not comfortable with taking
the jab have rights, too. And
they have been ignored for too
long.

Spirit of Christmas Committee disbanding
The Spirit of Christmas
Countywide Committee is disbanding. With the Covid pandemic in 2020 it created changes for our committee as well
as all other entities. The Spirit
of Christmas has been around
a great many years and as a
countywide committee since
2008.
We want to take this oppor-
LETTERS
tunity to thank Anderson
Countians for their generosity.
Not just the businesses, organizations and individuals for your
monetary gifts but also the toy
drives and collections boxes.
Our angel trees have given the
community and families in general an opportunity to feel the
magic of sharing with complete
strangers. We will miss that.
We especially want to thank
those folks, primarily behind
the scenes, for their work and
commitment in making the
Spirit of Christmas a true community effort. From the church
that let us use their facility
for pack up and distribution
days, the high school group
that decorated the angels, the
business that provided a truck
and driver, the wrestlers who
loaded and unloaded food stuff
and last but not least, the grade
school students who provided
the energy to help on packing
and distribution days. It is our
hope, that these people realize
there are many, many ways to
contribute to make an event
successful. Sharing your time
and talents with those around
you goes without measure.
If you and your family are
in need this Christmas season,
please contact ECKAN, 132 E.
5th, Garnett, Ks. If you would
like to help, monetary donations
can also be given to ECKAN.
Thank you again for the
memories.
