Coping, and recovering
Increase of Covid-19 cases,
recoveries means more people
must learn the lingo & health rules
BY DANE HICKS
THE ANDERSON COUNTY REVIEW 10-27-2020 /DANE HICKS
Cold and blustery weather met the Anderson County High School fall homecoming candidates Friday
night when Abby Reid and Rylie Hedges were crowned queen and king of the AC festivities. The cold
wind blew throughout the game, compounding a 45-7 homecoming loss for the Bulldogs at the hands
of Prairie View.
THE ANDERSON COUNTY REVIEW
TOPEKA Increasing numbers of Covid-19
cases in Anderson County and across the state
is pressing more patients to seek information
on recovering from the virus, so state health
officials are pushing the info to help educated
the newly afflicted.
Kansas has seen a spike in new Covid diagnoses in recent weeks, following other Midwest
and southern states not previously hard hit
by the virus. Health
experts say the spike
may be due to cooler
weather setting in and
more movement and
interaction by people
not as concerned with
social distancing.
Covid-19 had a high
survivability
rate
from the beginning,
but experts say better
treatment of the virus
among hospitalized
cases has brought an
18 percent increase in
survivability of even
the most severe cases,
even among some of
the highest risk populations. Kansas has

evening, October 31, on the
cases of Covid with just under 1,000 fatalities, a
mortality rate of a little over 1 percent.
The large number of people recovering
without hospitalization puts them and their
families, co-workers and others in search
of information on how to handle a possible
contact, said Anderson County Emergency
Preparedness Director J.D. Mersman.
As numbers continue to climb in the county we want to get accurate information to the
community., Mersman said. Public health
department staff and local healthcare workers
are seeing more people seeking information.
They are stretched for time dealing with case

ANDERSON COUNTY COMMISSION
OCTOBER 19, 2020
Chairman Jerry Howarter called
the meeting of the Anderson County
Commission to order at 9:00 AM
on October 19, 2020 at the County
Commission Room. Attendance:
Jerry Howarter, Present: David Pracht,
Present: Leslie McGhee, Present.
The pledge of allegiance was recited.
Minutes from the previous meetings
were approved as presented.
Solid Waste
Scott Garrett, Solid Waste
Supervisor, met with the commission.
He will be hiring another truck driver
this week for the landfill. Scott will
be going out for bid on new scales
for the transfer station which will be
installed in spring 2021. Discussion
was held on raising the fees to dump
at the landfill. Anderson Countys fees
are lower and not comparable to surrounding counties. To be comparable
Scott proposed an increase to $5.00
per ton on all dumping, including C&D
and trash. A minimum of $5.00 will be
imposed also. This change will take
place January 1, 2021. Commissioner
Pracht moved and Commissioner
McGhee seconded to increase the
dumping fees at the landfill by $5.00
per ton with a $5.00 minimum charge
to begin January 1, 2021. All voted
yes.
Veterans Memorial
Commissioner Howarter contacted ACME Brick about ordering regular brick and engraved brick for the
memorial walkway. The representative
said the brick color requested will not
be available until December. Anderson
Countys order will be placed when
she receives the quantity of bricks
needed.

Ive seen how some of our tax
dollars are spent and I think
there can be improvements
made in that area.
I like many others dont
mind paying taxes but often
wonder if we are getting s
good return and if there are
some areas being slotted
money that really need to be,
and if so is it too much. Ive
been asked where I stand on
windmills, my answer to that
is Im not against them, I just
dont want to see them from
my back door. I think they
are going to be the future of
energy and the end of nuclear energy which is probably
what a lot of people want to
see, so far as coal-fired energy I dont know if they will
ever be phased out because
of big oil corporations. Ive
been asked what I think about
what the commissioners did
with the mask mandate for
Covid 19, I dont think they
did anything wrong, my belief
is its up to the individual.
Ive been asked about county
roads. With my experience
mowing the county ditches I
have some ideas of how to
make them better and maybe
save money. I would appreciate your support in building a
county we can be even more
proud of. Thanks to all who
take the time to read.
What Moses, Joshua
and Jesus all said!
In Deuteronomy 30:1920 Moses addresses Israel
with an offer of life or death.
Moses had taken Israel from
slavery in Egypt to the border of Canaan the promised
land. Moses had spent 40
years of his life in Egypt, 40
years on the back side of the
desert of Midian and 40 years
wandering with the people
in the wilderness. He is about
to die and he says to the people
as part of his farewell address.
This day I call heaven and
earth as a witness against you
that I have set before you life
and death, blessings and curses. Now choose life, so that you
and your children may live and
that you may love the LORD
your God, listen to his voice
and hold tight to him.
I dont believe Moses is trying to absolve himself from
the leadership he provided to
the people. I do believe he
makes this statement to one
more time make the people
understand if they dont choose
life and follow God they are
choosing death and eternal
punishment. This pattern of
farewell speech is also found
in Joshua as he prepares to die
after leading the people into
the promised land and conquering it. Joshua addresses
the people as follows. But if
serving the LORD seems undesirable to you then choose for
yourselves this day whom you
will serve, whether the gods
your forefathers served beyond
the River, or the Amorites, in
whose land you are living. But
as for me and my household we
will serve the LORD. (Joshua
24:14-15) Again just as Moses
did Joshua issues a warning,
choose to follow God, or choose
death and eternal punishment.
WEEKLY DEVOTIONAL
BY DAVID BILDERBACK
Far too often people form
a casual relationship with the
church and a nominal relationship with God. Moses and
Joshua witnessed this and
both made a last plea to people to choose and follow God.
However the stakes get even
higher in the New Testament
when Jesus addressing his disciples prior to his crucifixion
tells them he is going away to
prepare a place for them and
they know the way to where
he is going. Thomas then asks
Jesus concerning the way
as he is afraid he will miss
being with Jesus. Jesus then
points out the narrowest of
ways when he says, I am the
way and the truth and the life.
No one comes to the Father
except through me . (John
14:6) Jesus spent his three
years of ministry on this earth
preaching and teaching about
God. Some people responded,
some didnt. It is a choice you
alone must make but when
you do you will never be alone
again. If you dont choose to
receive Jesus what awaits you
is an eternity alone living in
extreme darkness. (Rev. 16:1011).

OPINION
Armed for the election
This time, Im not just being cynical.
Theres a question I cant get out of my head:
What does it say about your country when the
approach of the national election parallels the
highest level of gun sales in the nations history?
Seriously. Within the first six months of
this year U.S. firearm retailers sold 19 million
guns, according to research by the Brookings
Institute. And most all of us know why. Its a
thought fueled by video clips of violence by
the American Left and the national Trump
Hate Society, and its not just in the back of
our minds anymore. Its real fear were afraid
that we might need to be prepared in the event
we have to defend ourselves against other
Americans.
Thats a dismal thought, considering this is
the USA not some backwater, junta-prone,
third world muck pit somewhere in the Congo.

a full-on call to battle stations this year. One
only needs to see so many examples of police

assaulted and their properties burned, and
peaceful demonstrations of free expression
attacked to get the message that violence is
no longer a fringe occurrence among the anarchy-seeking socialists and leftists of our nation.

between the violence of this summers riots and
the eras of thuggery that beset Italy in the early
1900s and Poland and Germany in the 1930s and
1940s. You dont have to know the numbers of
black and minority-owned businesses burned
and destroyed by these mobs to understand
that who owns what means little when thugs
just want to bruise a nation and reveal its governing institutions impotent to stop them.
Last week, a Jews for Trump parade
consisting of hundreds of vehicles decorated in American flags and Trump regalia was
attacked as it made its way from Coney Island
to Trump Tower in Manhattan by those intent
on shutting down the free expression of their
political rivals. One man along with his wife
and kids was pepper sprayed through an open
car window; mobs of others attacked vehicles
with rocks, eggs, ripped down flags and Trump
banners.
The dynamic of this national violence is now
in a transition period toward something worse.
Once dignity and decency are sublimated to the
point that theres no respect for the rights and
property of those with whom one disagrees, the
step to physical harm isnt far away.
Thats a process weve watched the Democratsupported left embrace all summer as violence
became commonplace at staged riots across the
country.
Sadly, theres no reason to believe the outcome of next Tuesdays election brings any
healing from this obsessive bitterness. There is
much to fear. The nation we thought was above
it all seems primed for gunfire. ###

It says on the news the opioid crisis in this
country has killed 500,000 Americans. Thats
more than Covid has. And yet theyre wanting to charge and convict the pharmaceutical
companies that make the stuff for the problems these people have had. Why arent they
charging and taking to court the doctors that
prescribe it and make the pipeline for this stuff
to the people who get addicted to it? The doctors
are getting off scot free and theyre the ones at
the front of the line of it. Thank you.
To the inbred that refers people to Facebook to

Im an employee at the hospital and weve

Dueling townhalls didnt serve public
President Trump and everyone else knew
that the NBC Townhall exposition would be
contentious and that the ABC Townhall with
Joe Biden, broadcast at the same time, would
be gentle.
And thats exactly what happened.
The NBC moderator, Savannah Guthrie,
was under heavy pressure to make Donald
Trump squirm. The left had battered NBC for
daring to put the President up directly against
Mr. Biden. Apparently, they feared Trump
would get higher ratings than Biden.
So Savannah spent almost all her interview time on the liberal attack line: why the
President doesnt promote masks, his taxes,
white supremacy, QAnon; the usual greatest
hits.
Meanwhile, George Stephanopoulos, an
avowed liberal democrat and chief correspondent at ABC News, did not even ask Joe Biden
about the biggest political story in America:
the exposure of his son Hunter as a person
who used his fathers political power to make
millions of dollars.
George, of course, knew he would look
weak not asking about Hunter but his bosses
at Disney, which owns ABC, want Biden to
win the election so the fix was in.
That is the state of the corporate media in
America today.
The question is, how did the national press
become a political entity? Why have standards of journalism collapsed?
The short answer is Donald Trump. Many
press chieftains despise the President because
they see him as a vulgarian who panders to
conservatives. Therefore, they are directing
NATIONAL COMMENTARY
BILL OREILLY, Guest Commentary
their power to remove him from office, not
responsibly seek the truth about his administration.
The long answer is the media culture.
Some years ago, Bernard Goldberg wrote a
book about CBS News called Bias that credibly reports the left wing slant of the organization – an outfit that employed him for more
than 20 years.
I worked for CBS for three years and saw
what Bernie saw: an organization that valued
a liberal point of view. At the time, there was
some discipline at CBS News so left wing bias
was tamped down on the air, especially in
local news where little political spin existed.
But the Dan Rather crew was very liberal and
hired many like-minded people.
The same culture was in place at NBC News
under Tom Brokaw and at ABC News starring
Peter Jennings. I worked at ABC for two years
and knew Jennings well. He was a social
liberal but not aggressively left. The boss at
ABC News, Roone Arledge, was in the same
category.
But, generally speaking, those managers
who did the hiring at all the networks were
looking for journalists who would fit in.
Thus, most network news employees were
men and women of the left.
President Reagan was not widely admired
in the halls of the three networks. But, again,
ideological reporting was keep under control
with exceptions like Sam Donaldson. Most of
the time, the digs against Mr. Reagan were far
more subtle than they are today against Mr.
Trump.
The harsh truth is that today most corporate news agencies have openly allied with the
Democratic Party. So, President Trump is not
only running against a political organization,
but also against companies that literally have
billions of dollars and thousands of employees
lined up to defeat him.
The nations two most powerful newspapers,
The New York Times and The Washington
Post, are openly hostile to Donald Trump, as
are the wire services which provide articles to
smaller papers from coast-to-coast.
If, somehow, President Trump manages to
win re-election, it would almost be a miracle
and the Vatican should investigate. Never
before in American history has the press and
the powerful social media corporations joined
together in a single mindset to crush a presidential candidate.
And this colossal Constitutional abuse is happening right before our eyes. As the dueling
network Town Halls proved beyond any reasonable doubt.
The press doesnt cover Biden; it covers for him
Joe Biden is the most cosseted presidential
candidate in memory.
Hes run a minimalist campaign thats
avoided the press as much as possible, while
the press hasnt been braying for more access
and answers, but eager to avoid anything that
could be discomfiting to the campaign.
Never before has the media been so openly
fearful of asking or reporting something that
might hurt a presidential candidate. Even the
lowest common denominator of news — simply being interesting — has been tossed aside.
Boring and uneventful is the new newsworthy.
The tendency reached a new level in the
medias handling of New York Post reports
on emails obtained from a laptop that Hunter
Biden reportedly left off at a Delaware computer repair shop.
Here was a story with enough mysteries
and plotlines to keep a couple of newsrooms
busy. Are the emails, putting Hunter Bidens
sleazy overseas business dealings in a more
sinister light, legitimate? Did Hunter really
take the laptop to the shop and forget about
it? And, more importantly, what do the emails
say about what Joe Biden knows or should
have known about Hunters work that depended so heavily on proximity to the vice president?
Instead, the press has been uninterested at
best and hostile at worst. Its the opposite of
a feeding frenzy. The media has deployed its
NATIONAL COMMENTARY
RICH LOWRY, King Features Syndicate
bomb disposal unit for fear that a potentially
explosive story might detonate.
What Biden has to say about the emails is
inherently of interest. Yet, he wasnt asked
about it at his recent ABC News town hall.
Never mind that his response would have
made headlines afterward and the clip would
have been shown in every TV segment about
the debate.
Subsequently, CBS reporter Bo Erickson
betrayed his profession by asking Biden his
response to the Post story on a tarmac. He got
slammed by Biden, I have no response, its
another smear campaign, right up your alley,
those are the questions you always ask.
No one rallied to Ericksons defense.
Instead, respectable figures on the center-left
shamed Erickson for having asked a politician an unwelcome question — which, the day
before yesterday, would have been considered
Journalism 101.
Much of the press has pronounced the Post
story debunked without doing any work to
debunk it and believes as a matter of faith that
it is Russian disinformation. Rather, the focus
has been reporting on how the Post reported the story, as the press works to discredit
media outlets that dont toe the correct political line — you know, just like Woodward and
Bernstein did during Watergate.
This tendency toward anti-reporting has
long characterized Biden coverage. The New
York Times took 19 days to cover Tara Reades
sexual assault allegation against him, not
wanting to burden its readers with information about a newsworthy charge too quickly.
Any Biden misstep is quickly explained away.
The press doesnt seem to mind that the campaign is prone to declare lids — or the end of
the candidates public day — early and often.
Usually, the media loves candidates who
make good copy, who provide drama and color.
In its hatred and fear of President Donald
Trump, though, it has thrown in its lot with
the dull and meandering Joe Biden, bringing
to the effort all the complacency and pointed
incuriosity it can muster.

There were 87 cases on October 7and 153 on the

deciding anything about masks.
Dont you ignorant people watch the news?
Always telling people to wash their hands, wear
masks, safe distance. This plague will never

a friend start following rules. Just in one day
they had 2,300 cases in Idaho. That would wipe

Tree roots found growing through various objects
Oddities! If anyone digs in the
dirt like I do at my archaeology
sites, sooner or later Im sure you
will discover some kind of oddity.
I found these two at my very
latest dig site and they both
involve the struggle of growing
tree roots.
WOW! One photo (top right)
shows a root certainly having a
struggle growing thru the neck of
an early brown corker medicine
bottle.
The second photo (bottom
right) shows a much larger tree
root having a rather difficult
time growing thru this large iron
harness buckle.

I am running for the House
of Representatives because I
believe I can represent the district better than my opponent.
Since all the contributors to my
campaign are from individuals,
my chief concern is representing
citizens of the 5th District not
special interests.
I grew up learning to use
firearms safely on my grandparents farm. I support Second
Amendment rights, but we need
to make sure that those buying assault-style weapons are
subject to rigorous background
checks.
I do not fit neatly in pro-life or
pro-choice camps on my views
about abortion. I am against
abortion, but I am not in favor
of an anti-abortion amendment
to the state constitution. Making
abortions illegal would create
a network of back-alley providers. We need to focus on making
abortion unnecessary, not illegal.
My top goals for the
Legislature include:
Rebuilding Kansas in the
wake of the COVID-19 pandemic,
Reducing or eliminating the
sales tax on food,
Passing Medicaid expansion,
Maintaining the current
state budget for education,
Economic development for
rural communities.

our district.
I do my best to serve every
person in this district, even
when I dont agree with them.
I proudly advocate for traditional Republican principles
like fiscal conservatism, limited government, and equal
opportunity for all, including
strong support for education
in all facets. In Topeka, I usually vote with the Republican
majority, but votes are to be
earned. While difficult and
never something I enjoy, I
push back against our own
leadership or special interests when they dont have the
best interests of Kansans or
OUR community at heart.
You will notice a tone in
this general election campaign different from August.
That is because this time the
special interests have not
dumped thousands of dollars
and misleading attack ads
into our district. If you want
that to end, we must vote for
candidates willing to put our
long-term good over shortterm gains.
Im proudly endorsed by
Kansas Farm Bureau, Kansas
Livestock Association, and
Kansans for Life. My opponent is a good and decent
man and should be commended for his contributions to education. However,
Kansas National Education
Association endorsed my
campaign because I have a
proven record of supporting
our kids and educators even
when its not easy to do so.
It is an honor to serve the
good, hard-working people of
the 5th District. I humbly ask
for the opportunity to serve
another 2 years.
and Unaffiliated voters. My
Republican and Unaffiliated
team members include mayors
of Ottawa and Iola, the two largest towns in the district.
I taught history at Chanute
High School for 40 years. As
a teacher, parent, and grandparent education has always
been important to me. I support Public Funds for Public
Schools, school funding at preGreat Recession levels, well paid
school employees, and a safe
and healthy learning environment for students. I also support
a cost of living adjustment for
KPERS.
Protecting access to healthcare and our rural hospitals and
clinics is also central to my campaign. It was the incumbents
failure to support Medicaid
Expansion that proved the tipping point for my entry into this
race. Medicaid Expansion would
insure 216 residents of Anderson
County, create 34 jobs, and have
an annul economic impact of
about $1.500,000 (source: Alliance
for a Healthy Kansas.)
I support investments in highways, bridges, and rural broadband.
I have studied and taught history my entire adult life, and
I know that honest, fair, and
responsible government is possible. We have seen too little of
that in recent years. I support
the politics of civility, cooperation, and compromise.
Workers, small business owners, and family farmers who cannot afford to make large campaign contributions and hire
lobbyists should be listened to.
Please check out Bruner for
Kansas on Facebook for my
thoughts on issues that cannot
be summed up in 300 words!

GARNETT – It was a great day
for the host Anderson County
Bulldogs on Saturday as both
the boys and girls teams are
heading to state after bringing
home first place finishes.
The girls were led by senior
Rayna Jasper (21:59) and freshman Addie Fudge (22:03) who
finished in fourth and fifth
place respectively.
Mackenzie Kueser, senior,
finished in 11th with a time of
23:05, followed by Kassie Mains
(23:10) in 12th.
Another senior, Lanie
Walter, was just inside the top
20 in 19th place with a time of
24:14.
Katie Schmit (28th, 25:40)
and Emily Moyer (30th, 26:11)
also ran on Saturday.
The Lady Bulldogs won with
a total score of 40. Second place
Santa Fe Trail wasnt too far
behind with 54.
In boys action, the Bulldogs
won with a score of 48 and
Perry Lecompton was in second place with 57.
AC ended up with 2 of the
top 5 runners as Riley Hedges,
senior, finished 2nd place with
a time of 17:17, which was 13
seconds behind champion Seth
Jarvis of Burlington.
Also in the top five was
freshman Landon Kraft, with a
time of 17:59.
Junior Kasen Fudge (18:32),
senior Seneca Wettstein (18:56)
and senior Orvel Broce (19:37)
finished 9th, 12th and 23rd
respectively.
Viking boys headed to
state for 5th straight year
BY KEVIN GAINES
THE ANDERSON COUNTY REVIEW
WABAUNSEE – The Central
Heights Viking boys cross
country team is back in familiar territory with a 2nd place
regional finish and are heading back to state for their 5th
straight year.
Seniors David Craft (2nd
place, 18:05) and Luke Cotter
(3rd place, 18:13) led the way for
the Vikings.
Craft was edged out by
champion Gavin Brady of
Brookeville by just over 3 seconds.
Freshman
Dakota
Kuczmarski (11th, 19:09) finished just outside the top 10 in
11th place.
Fellow
underclassmen
Nicholas Schultze (20:48) finished 27th and freshman Alex
Skeet (23:04) finished 42nd.
Rounding out the Viking
runners for the day was senior
Jesse Wharton (24.24) in 46th
place.
Saline High School won with
a total of 59, Central Heights
had 70 and Bennington was
narrowly behind them with 72.
For the Lady Vikings, junior
Taryn Compton (22:34) earned
a trip to state with a 5th place
finish.
Winning the girls run was
Peyton Piepho of Bennington
with a time of 21:25.
Junior Lily Meyer (25:27)
finished 24th.
Head coach Troy Prosser
stated, The Regional meet
is a bittersweet competition.
For the majority of the runners across the State, its their
final race of the season while
others get one last chance to
find a new level. This entire
season, up to this point, has
been complex, to say the least.
Lily (Meyer) has been one of
our top runners for the past six
years but found herself snake-
bitten with the injury bug this
year and never really had the
opportunity to fully heal up
from it. While the season ended
one week short for her, Taryn
continued to improve and grow
into an even stronger runner
as the season progressed and
solidly staked her claim as a
name other runners and coaches know at every meet.
Prosser added, The boys,
on the other hand, had a very
tough challenge living up to
their own success and standard
from the past four years. On
a 33 degree day with a bitter,
east wind, they didnt flinch
and put together their best performance as a team this season
– earning a chance to run as
a group at the State meet for
the 5th straight year. It took
all six of them but David and
Luke turned in some killer performances taking 2nd and 3rd.
Dakota also had a great race
in his first Regional meet as
a freshman (11th) – only a few
seconds away from an individual medal. Nicholas, Alex, and
Jesse all found exactly who we
talked about needing to beat in
order to place in the top two
and handled business perfectly.
On a personal note, heading to Victoria, KS for the 2A
State Championships might
seem like a huge change for
some, but its my mothers
hometown, one that I visited
almost every other weekend
for my entire childhood to see
my aunts, uncles, cousins and
grandparents. In a way, for
me, its like Im going home,
Prosser added.
Next up for the Vikings is
a trip to the state meet this
coming Saturday in Victoria
at Victoria-Sand Plum Nature
Trail. The boys will kick off the
day at 9:30 a.m., followed by the
girls running at 10:05 a.m.

SPORTS
Also running were senior
Dylan Cole (20:12, 32nd place)
and senior Leo Sheahan (20:27).
As expected, head coach
Mike Sibley was pleased with
this teams performance.
Congratulations to the
Anderson County boys and
girls cross country teams for
their regional victories on
Saturday. This marks the girls
1st regional championship
since 1977 and the first time in
our school history that the boys
and girls have both notched
regional victories in the same
year, Sibley stated.
Both squads will head to
the Wamego Country Club,
1900 Country Club Drive, in
Wamego on Saturday.
The 3A boys will run at 12:00
p.m. and the girls will follow at
12:35 p.m.
Due to restrictions concerning COVID, spectators are limited to 4 fans per participant
and must have wristbands to
enter the venue. Wristbands
must be purchased at the school
where the student attends as
they will not be selling tickets
or wristbands at the state competition.

THE ANDERSON COUNTY REVIEW
RICHMOND – The Vikings 4-1
start is a distant memory now
as they have dropped their
last 3 games after falling 20-18
on Friday night to Pleasanton
(3-5).
Pleasanton jumped out
on top 8-6 before the Vikings
tacked on a second quarter
touchdown to cut the lead to
8-6.
The score would remain
that way until the fourth quarter as both teams would score
two touchdowns each and all
conversions failed allowing
Pleasanton to hold onto their
slim two-point margin.
Tony Detwiler again led the
offense with 124 yards passing and two scores to go along
with 113 yards rushing on 19
attempts and another touchdown.
Jarod Crawford was the
leading receiver hauling in 4
passes for 73 yards and a touchdown..
Cauy Newell caught the
other touchdown pass en route
to 4 catches for 32 yards. Newell
also led the defense with 17
tackles.
Brady Burson and Dominic
Lopez did their part defensively as well amassing 12 tackles
each.
Next up is the opening
round of the 1A state playoffs.
Central Heights (4-4) will travel to Jackson Heights (3-4) on
Friday night, the game will
start at 7 p.m.
The winner will advance to
play Olpe (8-0) Friday night,

BUHLER – Last Saturday, Crest
Lancer Ursula Billings claimed
another notch in her season
goals as she ran away with a
victory at her regional cross
country meet at Prairie Ridge
Park in Buhler.
Buhler is nearly 3 hours
away, just a few minutes
northeast of Hutchinson, and
temperatures were in the low
40s at the time of the run but
Billings did not let the travel or
cold weather stand in her way.
The junior won with a time
of 21:02, which was 17 seconds
in front of second place finisher
Madison Butler of Macksville
High School.
Next up for the Ursula is
a trip to the state meet this

the championship with a total

was 778.

Maclaine

GARNETT – A promising
start for the Anderson County
Bulldogs (3-5) to the season
at 3-0 has evaporated and all
that is left is a Thursday night
tilt against Cherryvale (2-6).
Kickoff is at 6 p.m.
Outside of their two wins
over teams with a combined
0-14 record, Cherryvale has
struggled on the season.
Their last 4 defeats have
been by a combined 181-32.

On Thursday, Oct. 22, students at Greeley
Elementary brought the pumpkin farm to their
school. Due to Covid-19 restrictions and policies,
annual field trips have been put on hold, so the staff
and PTO at Greeley found a safe way to create
their own pumpkin farm. Pumpkins purchased
from Pleasant Ridge Farm in Rantoul, were placed
on the schools baseball field. A borrowed trailer
served as a hay rack ride and P.E. teacher, Marty
Alley, volunteered to use his truck to pull the trailer
around the school property. The children loved
the hay rack ride and were dropped off to choose
a pumpkin, decorate it, have their picture taken,
compete in two activities and enjoy a snack. The
80 degree weather helped make the day a big
success.
Above – Mr. Alley, the fifth and sixth graders pose for
a picture before heading out to choose a pumpkin.

Im Barbara Bollier. Im a

I

In
the
Kansas legislature, I was a
leading advocate for expanding affordable healthcare, fully
funding our schools, investing
in rural communities, balancing the budget and keeping
taxes low. I have a record of
standing up to either party if
they are doing the wrong thing
for Kansas. But I also worked
with anyone to get results for
our families. And thats exactly
what Ill do in the U.S. Senate.
My opponents record
is quite different. Hes more
interested in keeping the leaders of his political party in
Washington happy. He votes
the way he is told rather than
doing what is best for Kansas.
Not only that, he even voted
against a measure that would
have made healthcare more
affordable right now, in this
pandemic, when families need
it most.
This is a difficult and historic time for our country. We need
leaders in Washington who will
stop the political bickering stop attacking one another and just get things done. Thats
always been my approach – listen, look at the facts, work with
others and solve problems.
That is why I am endorsed by
Senator Nancy Kassebaum and
nearly 100 Republican leaders
from across Kansas. They know
I will be the independent voice
of reason that Kansans need in
Washington. Thank you.

I have met a lot of great
people throughout Anderson
County. I have noticed the
people in Anderson County
are kind, caring, and compassionate towards everyone they
meet. This made me very happy
to have our children raised
here and still live in Anderson
County today.
During my years of service,
I have learned you have to be
open minded, able to listen to
what the public/employees
want and need. I believe everything should be done as a team
and I believe the only time I
should be used is if something
goes wrong. There is no I in
team work and I fully believe
in giving credit where credit is
due.

involvement is very important to me. Programs such as
Crime Stoppers and Night Out

see prosecution for individual

the very end. This takes a good
working/open minded, relationship between everyone.
Thank You to everyone in

The American Red Cross is
urging healthy donors of all
blood types to give blood to
ensure a strong blood supply
for patients as the U.S. braces
for flu season while in the midst
of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Flu shot doesnt affect blood
donation eligibility
Medical experts are urging
people to get the flu shot to
avoid a flu epidemic on top of
the current COVID-19 pandemic. Because blood can only be
given by those who are feeling
well, a severe flu season could
create additional challenges to
maintaining a sufficient blood
supply for hospital patients in
need.
For those that have the flu, it
is important to wait until they
no longer exhibit flu symptoms,
have recovered completely
and feel well before attempting to donate. Donors must feel
healthy and well on the day of
donation.
In thanks for making time to
donate, the Red Cross will send
those who come to give Oct.
15-Nov. 11 a $5 Amazon.com
Gift Card via email, courtesy of
Suburban Propane. Plus, those
who come to give in October
are automatically entered for a
chance to win a $1,000 Amazon.
com Gift Card. Five lucky
people will win. (Restrictions
apply. Additional information
and details are available at
RedCrossBlood.org/Unite.)
Important COVID-19
information for donors
The Red Cross is testing blood,
platelet and plasma donations
for COVID-19 antibodies. The
test may indicate if the donors
immune system has produced
antibodies to this coronavirus,
regardless of whether an individual developed COVID-19
symptoms. Red Cross antibody
tests will be helpful to identify
individuals who have COVID-19
antibodies and may now help
current coronavirus patients
in need of convalescent plasma
transfusions.
Upcoming blood donation
opportunities will be November
4 at ACHS, 1100 W. Hwy 31, in
Garnett from 8:15 a.m. – 3:45 p.m.

rights of the above named parent.
You are required to appear before this court on
the 16th day of November, 2020, at 9:30
a.m. or prior to that time file your written defenses to the pleading with the Clerk of this Court.
If after a child has been adjudged to a Child In

this time of extreme government overreach and heavy tax
burdens. I will not let socialism creep into Kansas on my
watch. I will work diligently
to represent you. Together we
can and do make a difference.
I have worked over 31 years
in Information Technology
solving problems. I have been
recognized for work, including awards from NASA and
others for achievements and
teamwork. My background
provides me the skillset in
finding cost-efficient solutions.
My conservative values stem
from working in my youth at
my parents business followed
by over 25 years working on
the ranch, co-owned by me and
Tim, my husband of 31 years.
The Democrat Governors
throughout the nation are
promoting fear by their strict
shutdowns and catering to
extremist groups that promote
socialism. I will stand against
government overreach and
fight to protect our liberties
and God given rights. I will
work to get our economy back
on track by promoting legislation that reduces government
bureaucratic red tape and
reduces some of the highest
tax burdens in the nation.
Last year, I lead an effort
passing legislation to give you
a voice before your property
taxes increase. The Governor
vetoed this legislation. Many
have asked me to work on this
again, to override a Governor
who stands between us and
transparency. I ask for your
vote. Thank you.

and executive director of two
non-profit organizations, and
successfully ran state-wide programs for a public utility. I
was elected to the Topeka City
Council in 2013, and Mayor of
Topeka in 2017. As mayor, Ive
worked across the aisle to create hundreds of jobs, fix roads,
open a new tech school, and
reduce violent crime.
My platform is simple:
(1) ensure every Kansan has
access to affordable healthcare
and insurance that expands
Medicaid and protects pre-existing conditions; (2) provide
meaningful
infrastructure
improvements to our roads,
bridges, and highways, as well
as greater broadband access to
rural communities; (3) advocate for sustainable economic, social, and environmental
solutions that will support our
farmers, food processors, and
manufacturers; and (4) ensure
that our families and small
businesses have the support
they need to counter both the
public health and economic
impacts of the coronavirus.
Public service is not about
politicsits about people. We
must bring Kansans together.
Our families deserve an advocate who understands the challenges Kansans face. I am the
only candidate who has personally wrestled with poverty,
serious illness, overwhelming medical debt, and access
to affordable healthcare, and
now I can help others overcome their circumstances. Ive
spent my entire career serving Kansas families. Now Im
ready to stand up for you.

while I serve as Kansas State Treasurer.
My number one priority is helping our country move past and
recover from the COVID-19 pandemic. I will fully fund vaccine
research and will put in place economic policies that will allow
our economy to reopen and rebuild through small business
growth and higher take home pay for workers. As we dig out, we
need to hold China accountable for covering this up in the early
stages and allowing it to spread. That includes sanctioning those
officials responsible and working to bring our supply chain home
to America.
It is completely absurd that they are benefiting economically
from this disease. Beyond that, we need to get term limits passed
at the federal level. We cant send people to Washington, D.C. time
and time again and expect a different result. We also need to work
toward a balanced budget and stop continuing to saddle our children and grandchildrens future with our debt.
I have a track record of getting things done and I will work
just as hard in Congress for you. I would appreciate your vote on
November 3rd.

Mersman said KDHE was
circulating a fact sheet in
hopes of educating patients
and possible contacts about the
Covid basics:
DEFINITIONS:
Isolation Keeps someone
who is sick or tested positive
for CoVID-19 away from others, even in their own home.
Quarantine Keeps someone who was in close contact
with someone who has CoVID19 away from others.
Close Contact Having been
within 6 feet for more than 10
minutes of a person who is positive for CoVID-19. Examples:
riding in car, sitting at dinner
table, watching a movie on the
same couch. 14 days mandatory quarantine from last time
with positive case.
**While research indicates
masks may help in limiting
transmission, the degree of protection, if any, will depend on
the type of mask used and if the
mask was used properly and
consistently during exposure
to a symptomatic or asymptomatic person with COVID-19.
Therefore, the determination
of close contact should be made
irrespective of whether the
person with COVID-19 or the
contact was wearing a mask.
Because the general public has
not received training on prop-
er selection and use of respiratory PPE, it cannot be certain
whether respiratory PPE worn
during contact with an individual with COVID-19 infection
protected them from exposure. Therefore, the determination of close contact should
generally be made irrespective
of whether the contact, or the
case, was wearing respiratory
PPE, which is recommended
for health care personnel and
other trained users, or a mask
recommended for the general
public.
Household contact – Persons
living in the house with positive, 24 days mandatory quarantine minimum, can change
depending on the disposition
of the positive case or if anyone
else in household becomes positive.
Person Under Investigation
(PUI) – A Person Under
Investigation (PUI) is someone who is suspected of having
COVID-19 disease because of
symptoms or exposure (travel-related or exposure to a
known case). A person who
is being tested for COVID-19
because they are suspected of
having the disease is required
to be in isolation until test
results are received.

THE ANDERSON COUNTY REVIEW 10-27-2020 / SUBMITTED
Videoboards were recently installed in the K-6th grade classrooms at Greeley, as well as the other
elementary buildings in the district. This new technology opens up infinite ways to teach material and
engage students with just the touch of a finger to the screen. Technology teacher, Bayley Linn, held a

so many things this board can do, so many options and possibilities, its hard to cover everything in one Ron and Christy Ratliff of Garnett recently had mulitple entries at the 2020 Southern National Jersey
training session, said Linn. This is an infinite white board. Lesson pages, pictures, teaching apps, show and came home with many awards for their efforts.
videos, live teaching sessions, recorded teaching sessions can all be used with a touch or a swipe, she
added. The teachers were encouraged to practice with their new video boards and began using them
the following day. Above – Bayley Linn, Technology Instructor, holds a videoboard training session with
