Allen set for
day in court
Evidence against man
charged in moms death
up for review June 30

THE ANDERSON COUNTY REVIEW
PLEASANTON Linn County
District Court officials are readying
for a June 30 preliminary hearing
date in the case of James Rocky
Allen of Parker, who investigators
say used his vehicle to kill his mother on a rural Linn County road in
October.
Prosecutors with the Kansas
Attorney Generals office assisting
with the case in Linn County turned
in a potential witness list of more
than 60 names asking for the court
and the defense to endorse the individuals for possible testimony in the
upcoming preliminary. The move
came after Allens defense attorney
in March asked for a competency
evaluation to be completed on his
client after comments and requests
from Allens family and staff at the
Bourbon County Jail, where he was
being held.
As of late last week no report had
yet been heard by the court in that
competency evaluation, although a
motions hearing was set for June 6
in the case.
Investigators say Allen, 42, did
an about-face turn while driving
his truck on Keitel Road December
15, 2020, to purposefully ram a
vehicle driven by his mother, 70
year-old Charlotte
Grimes of Garnett.

his mothers vehicle into a nearby
pasture, then entered the pasture
to ram it at least one additional
time. Grimes was found unconscious at the scene by passersby

later returned. She later succumbed
to her injuries.

Local pastures to be subject for
test to try to thwart invasive grass
GARNETT Researchers will be
setting up research plots on some
Anderson County pasture ground
to determine if a system of soil additives can help keep Broomsedge
Bluestem from crowding out better
grasses and make better eats for
local cattle.

Horticulture Agent Ryan Shaub
said the upcoming research project
aimed to curtail an invasion of the
grass that thrives in particular distressed soils.
Though by the name you might
think it is one of the beneficial
native grasses, such as big bluestem
or little bluestem it is not, Shaub
said. Broomsedge bluestem, also

GARNETT The days leading up
to Memorial Day Weekend mark
a period of remembrance for local
community members as Anderson
County and the City of Garnett pay
homage to local residents whove
worn the uniforms of the nations
military services.
Two events on the courthouse
lawn this Thursdays Celebration
of Service ceremony for veterans
immortalized in the citys Patriotic
Banner Project, and Mondays dedication ceremony for the Anderson
County Veterans Memorial will
pay tribute to those veterans and
their indelible legacy of service.
The Thurday, May 27 6th annual Celebration of Service begins at
7 p.m, and is hosted by the City
of Garnett. This event honors the
individuals represented through
the Project: Garnett Remembers, a
patriotic pole banner project, now
totaling 310 honorees. The banners are now on exhibit throughout Garnett on city utility poles.
Military men and women who have
served the United States Air Force,
Army, Army National Guard, Coast
Guard, Marines and Navy with ties
to Garnett and Anderson County
are represented on these banners.
All 310 names of the banner honorees will be recognized during
this ceremony. The Presentation
of Colors will be performed by the

GARNETT Bob Mills, Director of Electric
Production for the City of Garnett, is retiring after
37 years of service with the city.
to the Garnett community.
Mills began his career with the city in November
1984 as a Power Plant Operator. He was promoted
to Acting Assistant Superintendent of the Garnett
Power Plant in 1989 and assumed the position of
Acting Power Plan Superintendent in 1992.
In 1993, Bob was named Superintendent of
the Power Plant. After receiving his OSHA
Certification in 2009 the title of Safety
Director was added to his duties. In March
of 2015, Bob was promoted to Director of
Electrical Production.
During his time with the City, Bob supervised the installation of the newest General
Motors engine in 1999 which increased the
generation capacity of the City and the
installation of the SCADA system which
allowed the electrical system to be monitored
and controlled from the Power Plant.
While working for Garnett Bob has actively participated in the electric and gas industry
in Kansas. He represented Garnett through
the KMEA (Kansas Municipal Energy
Agency) and KMGA (Kansas Municipal Gas
Agency), both non-profit joint action agencies created by state law to serve low-cost
electricity and natural gas to Kansas cities
that own their respective utilities as well as
KMU (Kansas Municipal Utilities).

Thursday, May 27th, from 3:30 to 5:00 p.m. at the

Mondays dedication ceremony

Weiner up
for new job
again

Manager Chris Weiner was among
three finalists for a position as
city manager of
Monett, Mo., last
week according
to local media
reports, but theres
no word yet who
got the job.
The
Monett
Times newspaper
website reportWeiner
ed Weiner was
among three finalists set to be interviewed May 14.
Officials at Monett City Hall yesterday morning said no selection had
yet been announced.
Weiner told the Review yesterday morning he was recruited for
an interview slot by a hiring firm
and at first had no real interest in
the job, but he said he decided the
option was worth considering as a
possible career move.
Im happy here. I have no real
desire to leave. But the more I
thought about it, the more I thought
it was something that I should check
out, he said.

MAY 17, 2021
Chairman Leslie McGhee called
the meeting of the Anderson County
Commission to order at 9:00 AM on
May 17, 2021 at the Anderson County
Commission Room. Attendance:
Leslie McGhee, Present: David
Pracht, Present: Anthony Mersman,
Present. The pledge of allegiance was
recited. Minutes from the previous
meeting were approved as presented.
Road & Bridge
Lester Welsh, Road & Bridge
Supervisor, met with the commission.
He let the commissioners know that
a portion of 1600 Rd will be closed
beginning May 24th to repair the
2 bridges. A detour will be set and
marked.
Economic Development
Julie Turnipseed, Economic
Development Director, met with the
commission. She gave an update
on what she has been working on.
Such as researching childcare options
which plays a factor in finding full time
employees for businesses and attending multiple webinars.
Public Comment
Kenny Lankard, Welda, met with
the commission. He expressed issue
with Bettis Construction and their lack
of fixing his second driveway in Welda
in the US169 construction area. Lester
Welsh will contact the supervisor if his
issue isnt resolved.
Brad McGregor, Welda, met with
the commission. He described his
situation regarding residing in a recreational vehicle. The zoning regulations
state no one can reside in an RV in the
county. The commissioners referred
him to the planning and zoning board
for clarification and direction on the
issue.
EMS Proclamation
Troy Armstrong, EMS Director, met
with the commission. He presented a
proclamation for EMS Week. He would
like to recognize the EMS personnel
and county first responders for their
dedicated work for helping our county and communities. Commissioner
Pracht moved and Commissioner
Mersman seconded to designate May
16th May 22nd, 2021 as EMS Week
with the EMS strong theme of This Is
EMS: Caring For Our Communities.

ANDERSON COUNTY ACCIDENT
REPORTS
On May 1, a vehicle driven by Ivan
Lacrone was traveling west on 1600
Road when it struck a deer.
On May 2, a vehicle driven by
Angela Owens was traveling northeast on 1830 Road and as she was
negotiating a turn the vehicle was
going too fast for the conditions causing the driver to lose control on the
gravel and departed the roadway to
the left, the vehicle rolled over landing
on its top.
On May 9, a vehicle driven by
Ashley Romig was traveling southbound on Highway 59, when due to
mechanical issue in her steering that
caused her to go left of center, she
overcorrected crossing back across
the highway and coming to a stop in
the west ditch.
On May 11, a vehicle driven by
David Holloway was southbound on
Highway 59 when it struck a beaver
in the roadway, causing front end and
under carriage damage.
On May 12, a vehicle driven by
Keith Simecka was in a construction
zone and failed to lower his dump bed
and struck overhead powerlines.

The Pieces and Patches Quilt
Guild was called to order by
President Jeanette Gadelman
on Thursday, April 22nd, 2021,
at 9:30 a.m. The meeting was
held at Kansas State Extension
Office Conference Room. There
were 23 members in attendance
plus two guests. The guests
were Brenda Futtrell and
Janice Stahl.
Minutes of the March 25th,
2021 were approved as printed.
Lynn Wawrzewski gave the
treasurers report.
Committee Reports
Programs: Jackie Gardner
reported that todays program
is Degrees of Dresdens by
Karen Hill. The May program
is a Lori Holt tutorial; the June
program will be Helen Ramsey,
a quilt judge. The July program
will feature an Appreciation
Quilt Shop Hop of local quilt
stores. Jackie also shared the
different Facebook Live quilt
shop features and urged members to check out the different programs. Jackie gave
an update on the virtual HQN
meeting. There are 56 professionals who presented and 79
guilds that were represented. It
was announced that our guild
won a grant to help host larger,
more expensive presenters. A
committee was formed to help
plan the programs. Committee
members are Connie, Mary,
Terrie, Bonnie, and Jackie.
Scholarship: Ruth Theis
reported that a scholarship
winner had been selected.
BOM: Joyce Buckley handed out the last block in the mystery quilt series. She urged
the members to keep the fabrics the same in all four blocks.
Members showed their complet-
ed blocks from previous month:
Bonnie, black/white/red; Lynn,
shades of blue; Terrie, assorted
colors; Donna, shades of blue.
Opportunity
Quilt:
Terrie reported that the 2021
Opportunity quilt is on display
at Farmers State Bank and will
be moved next to the Senior
Center.
Work continues on
the 2022 quilt. On April 15th,
Terrie, Sharon, and Bonnie met
to sew and cut and press quilt
blocks. Terrie showed 2 completed rows of the quilt. The
next sewing day to work on the
opportunity quilt is May 13th, 9
a.m. to 3 p.m. at Judy Stukeys
house.
Challenge: Bonnie reported
that the challenge project is due
November 2021 and the theme
is Sing it baby!
Charity: Sandra Moffatt
reported that she distributed 7
baby quilts to Life Care Center
in Ottawa. Bonnie read a thank
you card from the Life Care
Center for our quilt donations.
AN County Fair: Terrie
noted that packets of the challenge fabrics are at Country
Fabrics and are $3 a packet.
The theme is Heroes of the
Heartland; the fair is July
26-31st.
May Quilt Show: Mary
needs workers for the quilt

PROGRAM: Karen Hill from
Spring Hill. Her program was

Degrees of Dresdens. Karen
displayed many quilts using 18,
22.5, 36, and 45 degree wedges used to make the Dresden
design. Karen showed numerous ways to use the Dresden
design in a quilt and numerous ways to use different sizes
of Dresdens. Karen showed
many of her creative Dresden
design quilts.
Secret Sister Gift: Bonnie
Deiter received a birthday gift
from her Secret Sister. She
received a lint roller, a purple
thang, and a four patch mug
rug.
Show and Tell
Many beautiful and creative
quilting projects were shared.
Lynn Wawrwzski showed
her covid blue quilt, Ocean
Waves pattern. Bonnie Deiter
showed her Presidents Star
quilt and a Santa panel wallhanging. Sharon Rich showed
two National Quilt blocks, one
from 2020 and one from 2021.
Terrie Gifford showed a tumbling blocks baby quilt. She
also shared numerous boutique
items: pillowcase, purse, mul-
tiple hot pads, composition
book covers, hot mitts (from
last years BOM project), and
stuffed animals toys, Bunny
Hill designs. Our very industrious Mary Parrott completed
more projects from her UFO
list. She showed fidget necklaces, an AQS nine square dance
pattern in white background
with solids; a Jumping Jacks
quilt done in grays with bright
colors. Connie Hatch rejoined
the American Sewing Guild in
Topeka and completed a fitted
t-shirt which she modeled for
us. Joyce Buckley showed bowl
petals and a quilt of multi-colored stars with white background. The pattern is the
same as our 2022 Opportunity
Quilt. Donna Sutton showed
a blues quilt which was last
years BOM project, the Sunny
Skies pattern. She also showed
a blue New York Beauty quilt
that had paper pieced centers.

placemat bags she had finished.

Shaub said what the theory
researchers hope to evaluate
is the idea of fertilizing native
grass in early to mid-May
something not commonly done
to native hay meadows for fear
of invasion of tall fescue. The
idea is that if soil nutrient levels are increased, it might push
out the broomsedge bluestem.
They dont expect this to be
the quick fix, Shaub said, but
will hopefully give the Frontier
District Agents some better
information that they can then
pass along to help local producers.

Anna Ann (Chupp) Yoder
passed peacefully into the presence of Jesus
from
her
room at the
Rock of Ages
Retirement
Home in the
late
afternoon of May
21, 2021. She
Yoder
was 91 years
old.
Born in Holmes County,
Ohio on May 11, 1930, Ann
was the daughter of Andrew
and Anna (Yoder) Chupp. As a
young woman, she moved out
west to Oregon. In November
of 1948, Ann married Elmer
Swartzentruber, who passed
away a year later. Following
Elmers death, she met and
fell in love with Joseph Joe
Yoder, who had also lost his
spouse several years earlier.
The two were married on April
13th, 1952 in Amity, Oregon,
and they enjoyed a marriage of
over 55 years until Joes passing on April 17, 2008.
Ann enjoyed a full, long,
impactful life. A lover of
music, she sang in a quartet
along with Joe in her younger years. More than anything,
Ann loved her Lord and Savior
Jesus Christ, and church ministry was incredibly important to her. She and Joe spent
many years ministering to
local communities and helping to establish new churches around Oregon. Ann also
served as the President of the
ministry Womens Aglow for
a number of years. Combining
her passion for ministry with
a love of children, she and
Joe later lived in Mexico for
four years. There, they ran a
Childrens Home while also
raising their own two sons.
Ann was an excellent cook
and baker, and following her
return to the Willamette Valley
from Mexico, she opened her
own successful bakery, Anns
Pie Kitchen, which operated
in Newberg and McMinnville,
Oregon. Most of all, Ann loved
spending time with family her husband, children, grand-
children, and great-grandchildren, and many extended
relatives. She and Joe moved
to Washington State around
1990, where she enjoyed living
near both her sons and their
families until she returned to
Oregon two decades later following Joes passing. She also
greatly enjoyed gardening,
quilting, sewing, and catching
up with friends.
Ann will be remembered
as a loving wife, mom, sister,
grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend. She exuded
warmth but also had a memorable, endearing spunk. Her
faith in the Lord Jesus gave
her peace and a firm foundation throughout her whole life.
She was cherished and will be
missed by everyone who knew
her.
In addition to husbands
Elmer and Joe, Ann was preceded into eternity by the following siblings: Rudy Chupp,
Levi Chupp, Lizzie Chupp,
Mattie Schrock, Millie Eicher,
Drucilla Chupp, Dema Mishler,
Emma Chupp, Benjamin
Chupp, and Isaac Chupp.
She is survived by her siblings Andrew Chupp and Katie
Swartzentruber, and by her
children, Ray (Sherie) and
Craig (Charee). She is also survived by her six grandchildren
Jessica (Jonathan), Joshua
(Alyssa), Daniel (Kelsey),
Tifini, Mikinzee (Joe), and
Dalton, and her six great-grandchildren, Kaylee, Lori, Molly,
Scarlett, James, and Ember.
Anns family would like to
express their heartfelt thanks
to the staff at Rock of Ages
Retirement Home for their gentle and attentive care over the
years.
Funeral services will be
held at the Mont Ida Church
of the Brethren near Garnett,
Kansas, on Memorial Day,
Monday, May 30, 2021 at 10
AM. Interment will follow in
the Amish Cemetery, Garnett.
There will also be a future
memorial service at the Rock
of Ages, McMinnville, Oregon,
date and time TBD.

they were able to speak in other

to spread the Good News so
everyone could understand.
Jesus said that if he didn't
go away, then the Advocate
wouldn't come. The Holy Spirit
is there all the time if you put
your trust in Jesus. Too many
times, the Holy Spirit is speaking to us, but we're silencing it.
We need to listen closely and
be more in tune with it. God
gave us the Holy Spirit to help
us do the work he wants us to
do while we are here on earth,
but Jesus is coming back! So
keep watch and be ready! We
are told to be patient as we wait
for his return and continue the
work Jesus gave us until he

Who is the mediator that Job
speaks about? In 1st Timothy
2;5-6 we read. For there is one
God, and one mediator between
God and men the man Christ

given in its proper time.
In the Old Testament the
prophets heralded the coming
Messiah. In Isaiah 7:14 we read,
Therefore the Lord himself
will give you a sign: The virgin
will be with child and will give
birth to a Son, and will call him
Immanuel. In Isaiah 53 we read
of the crucifixion of Christ. But
he was pierced for our transgressions, he was crushed for
our inequities; the punishment
that brought us peace was upon
him, and by his wounds we are
healed.

The message in the Memorial
In my first 35 years in Anderson County, Ive
seen only a handful of truly historically notable
accomplishments in our community. With the
dedication of the Anderson County Veterans
Memorial next Monday, were about to see
another one.
Theres a reverence about true gratitude,
particularly when we see so woefully little of
it
in
our
worlds social
media-fueled
festival
of
daily back-biting these days.
The fact that
Anderson
County has
gone to such
extremes to
say
thank
you to its military veterans
with this beautiful monument nearing
completion
on our courthouse lawn,
not to mention
the long road
it took to get
here, is an
undertaking
that relays the
true depth of
heart of our neighbors and of the place we call
home.
Although many of us never knew so many
of those whose names will make up the bits
and bytes of digital data retrievable at the push
of a button in this monuments computerized
database, this delicately arranged brick and
mortar edifice is no moldering tomb for those
Anderson County men and women lost to time.
Each of them even those long past makes up
a dynamic message for the eras of visitors who
will gaze on its face in the coming centuries.
Though it stands with a devout stoicism,
the message resonates. Not just a message of
honor and gratitude for those whove laid aside
their tools, their briefcases and their aprons to
alter their lives for years at a time in a uniform
of their country; theres a message here that
reiterates the strength and heart of a nation
that can muster such dedication even from
its smallest and most rural hamlets and small
towns. And theres the message of lessons to
be taught and learned every time the course of

our nation demands that young and men and
women answer that call.
But in sum, there is no message of memoriam
quite like the best one of all:
Four score and seven years ago our fathers
brought forth on this continent, a new nation,
conceived in Liberty, and dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal.
Now we are engaged in a great civil war,
testing whether that nation, or any nation so
conceived and so dedicated, can long endure.
We are met on a great battlefield of that war. We
have come to dedicate a portion of that field, as a
final resting place for those who here gave their
lives that that nation might live. It is altogether
fitting and proper that we should do this.
But, in a larger sense, we can not dedicate -we can not consecrate — we can not hallow — this
ground. The brave men, living and dead, who
struggled here, have consecrated it, far above
our poor power to add or detract. The world
will little note, nor long remember what we say
here, but it can never forget what they did here.
It is for us the living, rather, to be dedicated
here to the unfinished work which they who
fought here have thus far so nobly advanced.
It is rather for us to be here dedicated to the
great task remaining before us — that from these
honored dead we take increased devotion to that
cause for which they gave the last full measure
of devotion — that we here highly resolve that
these dead shall not have died in vain — that this
nation, under God, shall have a new birth of
freedom — and that government of the people, by
the people, for the people, shall not perish from
the earth.

The police have got quite the rap it seems like,
but lately I was stopped by officer (name) and
he did a very professional job of performing his
duties. He was polite and kind and informed me
of my violation. I thought I needed to give some
praise where praise belongs. He did an excellent job. Hope he has a great future and I hope
we dont cross paths too many times.
The article on Mark Samsel, he deserves what
he gets. Hes just another one of those phony
Republican Christians. What I really found
interesting is hes a Republican and you never
mentioned that once. If thatd been a Democrat
thatd been every other word. But hes a

construction project between here and Welda?
I think originally the completon date was supposed to be March of this year, now I hear its

Why do Dems follow Hamas-loving Squad?
I never thought wed reach the day when
Id have to tell my children that there was a
time in this country when both Democrats
and Republicans, going all the way back
to President Harry Truman, would stand
unflinchingly, shoulder-to-shoulder with the
state of Israel.
I never thought Id have to reminisce about
the good old days in America where our most
important ally could rely on consistent backing from both parties in Washington, DC.
I never thought it would be considered controversial for an American politician to provide full-throated support for the one solitary,
free, democratic, diverse, and tolerant nation
in the entire Middle East.
But, here we are.
Moments like these are clarifying and
instructive… be sure to learn the lesson thats
right before our eyes.
In the past week, Hamas terrorists have
fired nearly 3,500 rockets at civilian areas
in Israel. Make no mistake, this is Hamas,
and they are terrorists. They have been on
the United States list of designated terrorist
organizations since President Bill Clintons
administration in 1997.
Since 2007, Hamas has been the controlling
organization in the Gaza Strip. They call the
shots there. And they are the ones sending
rockets to kill Israelis.
There is no gray area here. Hamas has
inflicted deadly terror attacks on Israel, and

Since Democrats still (barely) control the
levers of power in congress, they might be
able to actually have some influence on our
support for Israel, and theyre trying their
damndest to help Hamas fulfill their dream,
from the river to the sea.
Earlier this week, Democrats threatened to
suspend a sale of military supplies that would
help Israel defend herself in the midst of this
latest terror attack.
US House Foreign Affairs Committee
chairman Gregory Meeks is considering
sending the Biden administration a letter in
the coming days requesting that it delay a
$735 million sale of precision-guided missiles
to Israel, reported The Times of Israel on
Monday.
The action is being driven by consistently
anti-Semitic Omar:
Allowing this proposed sale of smart
bombs to go through without putting pressure on Israel to agree to a ceasefire will
only enable further carnage, an anonymous
Democrat on the Foreign Affairs Committee
told the Washington Post.

No, congresswoman, Israel is not an apartheid state
The charge of apartheid is the new blood
libel.
As Hamas rains rockets down on Israel,
members of the Squad in Congress and other
left-wing enemies are using the occasion to
amplify their accusation that Israel is an
apartheid state.
This is a transparent attempt to delegitimize — and isolate and ultimately destroy — the
Jewish state by associating it with a racist
regime that the world united to squeeze out of
existence.
Rashida Tlaib, the Democratic congresswoman from Michigan, says that Israel is
promoting racism and dehumanization
under an apartheid system, and Rep. Ilhan
Omar of Minnesota refers to Israels apartheid government.
The charge is given a patina of legitimacy by Human Rights Watch, which recently
issued a 213-page report devoted to the allegation, and other anti-Israel organizations that
understand the accusations potential power
to define Israel out of the circle of advanced
democracies.
It doesnt take much moral discernment to
understand, even if one takes a harshly critical view of how Israel conducts itself, that it
is nothing like an apartheid regime in South
Africa that depended on a rigorously enforced
system of racial repression.
The Arab minority in Israel (about 20% of
the population) may face obstacles, but it is
not treated like black South Africans.
NATIONAL COMMENTARY
RICH LOWRY, King Features Syndicate
Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York
and her ideological compatriots tweeted the
other day, Apartheid states arent democracies, which nailed the point, just not the way
they intended.
Israel is a democracy that affords its Arab
citizens full rights. They vote in elections and
Arab parties sit in parliament. These parties
obviously have a profoundly different worldview than the Zionist parties, which has been
a barrier preventing cooperation between
them. But this year, in a first, Arab parties
were part of the negotiations over forming a
new government before they broke down.
Arab Israelis are full participants in
Israeli society. There are Arab justices on
the Supreme Court. About 20% of doctors
in Israel and about half of pharmacists are
Arab. Roughly 17% of students seeking an
undergraduate degree are Arab, a number has
roughly doubled over the last decade.
As Steve Kramer of The Times of Israel puts
it, They arguably are the most free Arabs in
the Middle East.
Then, there are the Palestinian territories,
where there is a marked lack of democracy

Palestinian president Mahmoud Abbas,
who is still serving a four-year term that began
about 15 years ago, cancelled new elections
scheduled for May 22. He found a way to blame
Israel for this move, of course, but the bottom
line is that his party, Fatah, feared Hamas
would win, as it did in the last Palestinian
election back in 2006.
The Palestinians have made postponing
elections into a high political art, in keeping
with the lack of democratic accountability in
other neighboring Arab states.
How Israel should handle the threat of
another terror state devoted to its destruction
arising on its borders is, any fair-minded
person should concede, an inherently difficult
question.
It has offered the Palestinians a state twice,
in 2000 and 2008, to no avail.
Israel evacuated the Gaza Strip entirely in
2005. It cant be blamed for Hamas winning the
elections in 2006, taking over Gaza in a coup
against Fatah a year later, and misgoverning

present of Richmond. Museum
hours for the summer are open
each Saturday and Sunday, 1-4,
with no admission charge.
The
program

Richmonds Main Street will
be Sunday, May 30th at 3 p.m.,
said Dennis Peters who will
present research he has done
over several years.
Marvin Gretencord has
a display of about 30 model
tractors matched with names
of farmers in the Richmond
area who had the tractor like
tractor show quite nostalgic. Gretencord, of Olathe, has
some special touches as a team
of horses, a small Santa Claus,
a sack of corn and other items
that match these farmers. This
is truly a trip down memory
lane.
Other new items at the
Richmond Museum this year
include three thick notebooks
of pictures and stories from
Patriots Bank of Richmond.
These pages tell many interesting events and activities of
the banks history and were
given to the Museum as part
of Connie Beckwiths recent
retirement from the bank.
There are aprons from the
late Pat Rossman, a work coat
years ago, a group of some of
Central Heights High School
yearbooks, a bulletin board
display from Jim Roush of
Princeton that is fascinating
reading, a Platte family notebook from JoAnne (Katzer)
Platt of Roeland Park, and
other items.
The PowerPoint presentation about Richmonds Main
Street has been in process for a
long time, said Peters. He uses
several sources to research
and write about who built and/
or owned what buildings, the
buildings uses through the
years, or maybe when it was
demolished or no longer used.

The only hope is that fellow Democratic members
of Congress stand up to the
Hamas Caucus and speak
truth to power.
Kudos to Rep. Ted Deutsch,
who did just that. Deutsch,
a Florida Democrat who
represents a Boca Raton district that was once repped by
Col. Allen West, took to the
floor of the House and came
just short of calling out his
grams, and a mini-grant from
Franklin Co. Visitors Center
provided the large screen that
will be used for the first time.
New steel siding was provided
at-cost and the work done by
Quality Structures, Inc. several months ago, so the Museum
is ready for visitors!
The Museum asks that visitors wear masks and practice
reasonable social protocols.

ACHS baseball state bound

THE ANDERSON COUNTY REVIEW
HUMBOLDT – Despite the
weather and location change,
the Anderson County Bulldogs
overcame all obstacles en route
to winning three games last
week in their regional to qualify for state.
The regional was supposed
to take place on their home
turf, but due to ongoing rain
the games had to be relocated
to Humboldt.
Last Monday, May 18, the
#2 seed Bulldogs (17-3 entering
regionals) made easy work of
#7 seed Neodesha (3-15), winning 10-0 in 5 innings.
AC crossed the plate 5 times
in the bottom of the first for an
early 5-0 lead. They would tack
on one more run in the third
inning before scoring 4 runs in
the bottom of the fifth to bring
the game to an end early.
Tyler Denny, Dallas Kueser
and Derek Rockers all paced
the Bulldogs with 2 hits each.
Denny led AC with 2 RBIs
and also scored a pair of runs.
Preston Kueser earned the
start and the win by going 2
innings, allowing 2 hits and
striking out 3.
Bailey Blaufuss and Dalton
Kellerman closed out the
game. Blaufuss went 2 innings,
walked 3 batters, struck out 1
and allowed 1 hit. Kellerman
pitched 1 inning, walked 1 and
struck out 1.
The Bulldogs' stiffest test of
the regional came in the second
round against 3rd seeded West
Franklin (13-10).
West Franklin would take
an early 1-0 lead in the top of
the first but the Bulldogs would
answer with 3 runs in the bottom half to jump on top 3-1.
AC would tack on one more
run in the bottom of the second inning for a 4-1 advantage,
which is where the game would
stand until the 6th.
West Franklin would plate
one run in the top of the inning
to cut the deficit to 4-2, but
just as they did earlier, the
Bulldogs answered with a run
of their own in the bottom half
to put them up 5-2, which would
be the final.
In the regional final, the
Bulldogs made easy work of
Wellsville cruising to a 10-0 victory, stamping a ticket to the
state tournament next week in
Manhattan.
The Bulldogs (20-3 heading
into state) will be the top seed
and will be squaring off against
#8 seed Hugoton (15-8) at KSU
Tointon Family Stadium at 3:30
p.m. on Thursday, May 27.
After opening the season losing 6 of 7, Hugoton has won 9 of
their last 11 games including
2 games in extra innings in
regionals to advance to state.
The winner of that game will
advance to play the winner of
Frontenac (17-5) and Hesston
(17-5) this Friday.
The championship game
will be Friday evening, May 28,
at 5:45 p.m.

PAOLA – The Crest Lady
Lancers (6-14) were the #5 seed
and opened play against the #4
seed Lyndon (7-14), 6-0 to bring
their season to an end.
Both teams were reeling
entering the playoffs, Lyndon
was losers of their last 11 regular season games and before
Crest won their final regular
season game they had lost their
previous 12 games.
Lyndon would lose in the
quarterfinal game to top-seeded Jayhawk-Linn in a hard
fought 5-4 game.

Lancer baseball heading to state

THE ANDERSON COUNTY REVIEW
HUMBOLDT – After an opening round blowout, the Crest
Lancers won despite being
challenged over their next two
games to earn a trip to the state
tournament.
Top-seeded Crest (19-1)
downed Yates Center with ease
in the opener, 11-0 in 5 innings.
Leading just 4-0 heading into
the bottom of the fourth, the
Lancers blew the game open
with 7 runs.
The Lancers would score 11
runs on 11 hits and commit just
one error defensively.
Conversely, Yates Center
would be shut out and pick up
only one hit.
Avery Blaufuss pitched a
5-inning gem, allowing just one
hit, striking out 8 while walking 3.
Offensively,
Stratton
McGhee, Harrison Barker and
Jack White all scored a multihit game with 2 hits apiece.
In the second round match
up with fifth seeded Central
Heights Vikings, the Lancers
were limited to under 10 runs
for just the second time of the
season, the first time was a
7-3 loss to Jayhawk-Linn, their
only loss of the season.
This time though, the pitching threw another shutout for a
4-0 win.
Crest was limited to just 2
runs in each of the 3rd and 5th
innings.
McGhee picked up a pair
of hits and drove in 3 of his
squads 4 runs.
Stetson Setter scored a win
by going 5 1/3 innings, allowing just 3 hits and striking out
7.
In the championship game,
the Crest Lancers broke open
a tie game late by scoring 4
runs in both the fifth and sixth
inning en route to a 12-4 win
over Southern Lyon County.
Trevor Church led the offensive attack with 3 hits in his 4
at bats, driving in one run.
Church picked up the victory on the mound, pitching
6 innings, allowing 3 hits, no
earned runs and struck out 10.
Church improved his record to
7-0 this year with an impressive 0.34 earned run average.
Bulldogs golf team
punches ticket to state

OSAWATOMIE – Senior Joshua
Martin led a strong group of
Anderson County Bulldog golfers last Tuesday at the regional meet in Osawatomie as he
finished in a tie for first place
to help his squad to a second
place finish overall.
Martin (74) shot a +3 to tie
for the best score but finished
3rd overall after the playoff.
Sophomore Lane Richards
(83) finished in a 3-way tie for
seventh.
Reese Jarett (92, 12th place),
Tyler Feuerborn (100, 20th
place), Nathan Gwin (107, 21st
place) and AJ Rues (113, 25th
place) also did their part helping the team qualify for state.
The state tournament, in
Hesston, began yesterday, May
24, and will conclude today.

Bakers dozen heading to
state for Bulldogs in track

FREDONIA – Last Friday, the
ACHS Bulldog track and field
squads performed well at the
regional meet in Fredonia,
sending 13 athletes to state. In
the process the girls finished
regional runner-up, which
was their best finish as a team
since 1988.
Abigael Reid finished first
in the pole vault, clearing 10
7, and in the process setting
a new school record.. Reid also
finished 2nd in both the 100
meter (15.42) and 300 meter
hurdles (41.86) and was also a
part of the 4×400 team (4:14.91)
that won gold along with
Marah Lutz, Emma Schaffer
and Makenzie Kueser.
The girls 4×100 team (52.25)
also qualified for state, finishing fourth. The team consisted of Ashley Sulecki, Whitney
Wright, Schaffer and Kueser.
Also the girls 4×800 team
(11:15.10) which includes Addie
Fudge, Bailey Clawson, Kassie
Mains and Lutz.
Schaffer also qualified for
state in the 400 meter run
(1:01.70).
In field events Shelby Dunn
finished 2nd in javelin (108 6)
and 4th in discus (101 6) and
Kueser finished fourth in both
the triple jump and long jump
(15 1).
For the boys, Riley Hedges
paced the team with a first in
the 300 meter hurdles (41.86)
and finished fourth in the 1600
meter run (4:47.25).
Fisher Galey (138 3) and
Chaylin Peine (133 4) finished
2nd and 3rd respectively in the
discus.
The 3A state meet will be
Friday, May 28 in Wichita on
the Wichita State University
campus at Cessna Stadium.
Field events begin at 8 a.m.
and running events begin at 11
a.m.

Billings will be headed to state
in both the 3200 meter run and
the 1600 meter run after her
performances last Thursday at
Burlington.
The junior finished in second in the 3200 meter run with
a time of 12:42.72, which was
20 seconds behind the time of
Chloe Clevenger (12:22.1) of
Doniphan West.
Billings (5:46.11) finished
fourth in the 1600 meter run.
The winning time was by Macy
Smith (5:39.27) of Olpe.
Other finishers for the girls
were Brinley McGhee (21.21,
12th place) in the 100 meter
hurdles and sixth in the long
jump with a jump of 15 8.5.
Mia Coleman qualified for
finals in the 100 meter dash,
finishing 8th overall with a
time of 14.42.

dash with a time of 29.26, good
for 5th place in the finals.
Top finishes for the Lancer

Brenton Edgerton both ran the
100 meter dash in 12.30 seconds, which tied them at 14th
overall.
McGhee (18 7.5) also finished 9th in the long jump and
Kobey Miller (121 10) finished
9th in the javelin.
The 1A state meet will be
Saturday, May 29 in Wichita on
the Wichita State University
campus at Cessna Stadium.
The girls 3200 meter run will
be at 11 a.m. and the 1600 meter
run will begin at 3:30 p.m.
Lady Bulldogs lose lead late, fall short of state

OTTAWA – The Anderson
County Lady Bulldogs entered
last weeks regionals with an
11-8 record but in a regional
full of 8 teams without a losing record, it was a wide open
bracket.
The regional was hosted by
Burlington but relocated to the
turf fields at Ottawa University
due to heavy rain throughout
the week.
In the opening round, the
Bulldogs dominated #3 seed
Osawatomie (11-5), 9-0.
It took a pair of extra base
hits, a double by Cali Foltz and
a triple by Ellie Pedrow to get
on the board in the first inning
and take an early 1-0 lead.
That is all starting pitcher
Alison Brown would need as
she pitched one of her better
games of the season going 7
innings, striking out 6, walking 2 and allowing just 3 hits in
the shutout.
The Bulldogs would give her
plenty of support though as
they would score 3 runs in the
third, 2 runs in the fourth and
3 more in the sixth for the 10-0
win.
Foltz would go on to pick up
4 hits in the contest, driving in
2 runs and scoring 3 times.
Rayna Jasper would tally 3
hits in her 4 at bats, scoring 3
runs and driving in another.
The Bulldogs next opponent
would be Burlington (#7 seed,
10-8) after they also scored an
upset in the opening round
downing #4 West Franklin, 6-0.
Burlington had the upper
hand early, clinging to a 3-1
lead after 3 1/2 innings.
The Lady Bulldogs would
respond with 6 runs in the bottom of the fourth to turn the
game around.
Ashley Lickteig, Kaylyn
Disbrow, Foltz, Pedrow and
Brown would all drive in runs
in the inning.
Burlington responded with
2 runs in the fifth and scored
one more in the seventh but
came up short in the 8-6 win by
ACHS to advance to the regional championship game.
Disbrow would finish the
game with just one hit but 3
runs batted in and score once.
In the championship game
against Prairie View, the
Bulldogs came up just 6 outs
short of earning back-to-back
trips to the state tournament.
Anderson County scored
two runs in the first but
Prairie View responded to take
the early 3-2 lead with 3 runs in
the bottom half of the inning.
The score would remain
unchanged until Anderson
County finally knotted the
game back up with a run in
the top of the fifth on an infield
single by Cali Foltz to score
Jasper.
Jasper would make her
presence felt again in the sixth
inning by hitting a two-run
double, which put the Lady
Bulldogs up 5-3.
Then the game unraveled
for ACHS in the bottom of the
sixth inning.
Following a leadoff single,
back-to-back bunt singles loaded the bases.
The ensuing Prairie View
hitter would single to center,
scoring a pair of runs to tie the
score at 5 with still no outs.
A walk, another infield single and an error helped Prairie
View build an 8-5 lead with still
no one out in the inning.
Following a flyout and a
walk, the bases loaded threat
came to an end as a line drive
back to pitcher Alison Brown
was caught and was able to
throw out a runner at second
that couldnt get back in time
to end the inning.
AC did score a run in the
seventh but the game came to
an end with one tying run at
the plate as Prairie View hung
on for an 8-6 victory.
Lady Vikings run out of steam in championship game

OTTAWA – Central Heights
dropped the championship
game in disappointing fashion
after a pair of upsets in regionals last week.
It was a season that started
with so much promise as the
Central Heights softball team
won 4 straight games after an
0-2 start. But then a 10-game
losing streak amidst a 2-14
finish on the season left the
Vikings with a #6 seed sporting a 5-15 record and distant
odds of making state, but the
Lady Vikings had one final run
in them.
In an offensive shootout, the
Vikings upset #3 Uniontown
(10-8) in the first round, 18-13.
The Lady Vikings would
strike first with 2 runs in
the first inning on an Addey
Froggatte double that scored
by Cameron Peel and Taylor
Chrisjohn for a 2-0 lead.
Uniontown scored five of
their own in the bottom of the
second to jump into the lead,
5-2.
Central Heights would
answer though with 2 runs in
the third and 3 in the fourth to
lead 7-5.
Chrisjohn hit a two-run double in the third, scoring both
Jadynn Criqui and Peel and
then another bases loaded double in the fourth by Chrisjohn
scored AnneLeese Thao, Axel
Roberts and Criqui.
Central Heights would blow
the game open with 5 runs in
the top of the fifth and seventh
innings to lead 18-7. Uniontown
tallied 6 runs in their half of
the seventh to account for the
final score.
The key play in the 5-run
fifth inning was a 2-run double
by Roberts, scoring both Elise
Platt and Thao.
The big hit in the seventh
was a homerun by Peel, scoring Roberts and Criqui.
The Vikings pounded out
16 hits in the win. Roberts,
Criqui and Chrijohn each had
3 hits each. Chrisjohn finished
the game with 5 RBIs, while
Roberts and Peel each drove in
3 runs.
Last Thursday the Lady
Vikings downed Marmaton
Valley 11-6 in the semifinals.
Central Heights never
trailed but the game was close
throughout. The Vikings led
4-2 after the third inning, 6-3
after the fourth and 9-6 after
the fifth inning.
It wasnt until a pair of
insurance runs in the top half
of the seventh gave Central
Heights some breathing room.
Chrisjohn again led the
offense picking up 3 hits, scoring twice and driving in two
runs. Chrisjohn had two of
the three extra base hits on the
afternoon for the Vikings as
she hit a double and triple.
Peel and Chloe LaDuke also
drove in two runs.
Following a brief break, the
VIkings went straight into the
championship game against
top-seeded Jayhawk Linn (21-0)
and unfortunately crumbled in
a 15-0 defeat.
After amassing 29 runs in
their first 2 games, they only
picked up 1 hit in the championship game. They also fell
apart defensively committing 5
errors which led to 10 unearned
runs.
Jayhawk-Linn scored 10
runs in the first, taking the
wind out of the Vikings sail.
They would score 2 runs in
the second and also score three
more runs in the third, with no
outs, when the game came to
an end due to the 15-run mercy
rule after 3 innings.
Vikings turn in solid performances to qualify for state

PLEASANTON – Last Thursday
Central Heights qualified 8 athletes for the state meet at the
regional meet in Pleasanton.
Leading the way was Taryn
Compton and Lily Meyer as
they had the best individual
performances.
Compton qualified for state
in both the 100 meter (2nd
place, 17.08) and 300 meter hurdles (3rd place, 49.40)
Meyer finished 2nd in the
800 meter run with a time of
2:37.35 and barely missed qualifying in the 400 meter run with
a time of 1:06.30, good for 5th
place.
For the boys, it was Luke
Cotter qualifying in the 3200
meter run with a time of
10:36.30, good for 4th place.
The 4×800 team consisting of Jarod Crawford, David
Craft, Carson Wood and Cotter
also ran a season best time of
8:50.52, which was good for 3rd
place.
Head coach Troy Prosser is
ecstatic with how his athletes
performed, The Vikings are
going back to the State Track
& Field Meet! It feels incredible
to say that again after having
the 2020 season cancelled. All
around, the team had a great
day with personal bests in the
Javelin, Shot Put and many
more on the track. Qualifying
first was the boys 4×800 relay.
They were seeded 5th going
in (top four qualify) and were
a solid five seconds behind

the closest team on paper so
they knew they would have
to improve, plain and simple.
They picked a great time for
their best performance on the
track by setting a season best
mark by 22 seconds and taking
3rd. It was incredible to watch
and even better to see their joy
after it was official. Taryn followed up with yet another stellar performance in the 100m
hurdles to capture a Regional
Runner up as well as a personal
best. She followed that up by
coming within 0.06 seconds of
her best in the 300m hurdles to
qualify in 3rd in a stacked race.
Lilys 800m was brilliant from
start to finish. She had been
working her way into some
new events this season and she
picked a great day to drop her
800m time by 10 seconds for
a lifetime best 2:37 and a 2nd
place finish. Wrapping up the
day, Luke Cotters technical
mastery of the 3200 worked in
his favor once again by easily
capturing a 4th place qualifying mark and picking up another PR in the process. With the
end of the season a looming
possibility today, the heart
and determination these kids
brought explains exactly why
their season continues and will
instead end on the biggest stage
next weekend in Wichita.
The 2A state meet will be

(KMEA) for many years.
He served several terms as
Chairman and Vice-Chairman
for the energy management
project which provides electricity to the City of Garnett
and continues to do so. In 2015
Bob was elected to serve on the
KMEA Executive Committee
and currently serves as the
Vice President of KMEA. Bobs
leadership has been an integral
part of several significant projects including the purchase of
a portion of a large power plant
in Pleasant Hill, Missouri, the
development of a linemen services crew currently serving in
western Kansas, and the acquisition of a small engineering
firm in Salina, Kansas.
Bob has also served on the
Joint Board of Administration
for the Kansas Municipal Gas
Agency/Kansas Municipal
Energy Agency for the last several years. He has also been
active in the Kansas Municipal
Utilities which provides training and legislature services for
Municipal Utility throughout
Kansas. He has served on the
KMU Mutual Aid Advisory
Committee since it began.
Bob has been the recipient of
Lifetime Achievement Awards
from both KMEA and KMU.
As a city employee, he used
his skills with metal and wood
to build and repair streetlights,
bike racks, signs, helped with
the renovation of the Santa Fe
Depot with the installation of
the caboose, the walk bridge at
the South Lake, Garnett 150th
displays, many Christmas
floats and the docks at the lakes
and reservoir.
He is very involved in his
community. He became a
Hunters Education instructor
in 1979 in Greenwood County
and since 1984 in Anderson
County. He received the Order
of the Buffalo in 2013. Bob was
recently named the Region V
Instructor of the Year for 2020.
Other community participation over the years includes
Lake Garnett Sporting Club
officer and board member,
Anderson County LEPC,
Harvesters, Garnett County
Club former board member,
officer and grounds chair,
NRA Women on Target, Youth
Trapshooting, coached youth
soccer, basketball, baseball,
high school boys and girls
golf and Parks and Recreation
Board and Planning and
Zoning Board member.
Bob is married to Vicki
Mills and has 3 sons and 4
granddaughters.
As he leaves, Bob takes with
him a great deal of knowledge
of the electrical and gas industry and power plant operations.
A resulting offer by Garnett
commissioners granted him a
two-year employment contract
with a raise from some $90,000
to $95,000 per year, with a oneyear notice from commissioners to non-renew his employment.
Weiners relationship in
particular with commissioner Greg Gwin has been one of
ongoing static in recent years.
Gwin has frequently been
critical of Weiner in various
aspects of city management
and opposed the culmination
of an increase in Weiners
compensation package during
those discussions last year.
Gwin recently called Weiner
out in open session of a city
commission meeting regarding a personnel matter the city
manager had handled involving a city employee, discussing
various particulars about the
move and the issue in open
session.

BRADENTON, Fla. A Florida
distillery says its requests to
promote a "Back the Blue"
event through paid advertising
on Facebook has been repeatedly denied by the social media
platform.
Loaded Cannon Distillery,
located in Lakewood Ranch in
Bradenton, Florida, is preparing to launch a new line of
spirits dedicated to different
groups of first responders.
"We're launching this Lost
Legend series because they are
legends, all of them," Loaded
Cannon Distillery marketing
and creative director Michelle
Russell told FOX & Friends
Weekend in an interview on
Sunday. "First responders,
EMTs, police, firefighters, anybody that wears a badge, and
they deserve some recognition."
The free event will take place
at Loaded Cannon Distillery
on May 29 from 11 a.m. to 7
p.m., featuring live music,
food trucks and other vendors,
and free drink samples from
Loaded Cannon.
The majority of the event's
proceeds will go to Supporters
of Law Enforcement, or SOLE,
a nonprofit dedicated to providing support to law enforcement
in times of illness, crisis, or
injury. In addition, about 2%
of each of the five bottles' sales
will be given to the respective
first responder group being
honored.
In an effort to promote the
event to a wider audience,
Russell sent a series of requests
to Facebook to place multiple
$200 ads. However, each of the
requests were denied by the
tech giant, according to Loaded
Cannon Distillery.
"Your ad may have been
rejected if it mentions politicians or sensitive social issues
that could influence public
opinion, how people vote and
may impact the outcome of
an election or pending legisla-
tion," Facebook, which did not
immediately return Fox News'
request for comment, cited as
the reason for the rejection.
However, Russell argues
there is nothing controversial
or political about the event.
"We're just trying to support
our community because during
this hard, trying year that
everybody has gone through,"
Russell said.
The Lost Legend series
will be available for purchase
outside of Loaded Cannon
Distillery's Tasting Room
beginning in June.
