GREELEY State and local investigators are still awaiting a conclusive
forensics report to formally identify two adults and a toddler killed in
a Wednesday morning house fire at
Greeley.
It was the second residential fire in
as many weeks in Anderson County. A
Garnett apartment house was destroyed
February 23 at the corner of 5th Avenue
and Walnut Streets with the structure
and contents lost. Residents of one of
the apartments escaped serious injury
and another renter at the house was not
home at the time. Two other apartments
in the structure were not rented.
A statement from Anderson County
Fire and Emergency Management said
firefighters were dispatched to Greeley
about 6:45 Wednesday morning to the
two-story home in he 300 block of Main
Street to find the blaze fully involved.
ACEM Director J.D. Mersman said
the construction of the home and the
size of the blaze made it impossible
for firefighters to enter the structure.
Once the fire was brought under control
Mersman said responders used ladders
suspended over the structure and located the three individuals who perished
in the blaze. A team of responders from
Olathe assisted with the use of special
equipment used in the event of building
collapses to retrieve the victims.
The incident was being investigated
by the Kansas Fire Marshals office and
the Anderson County Sheriffs office.
Sheriff Vern Valentine said in a follow
up statement foul play was not believed

With congressional map
still in limbo, deadline coming
for those seeking local office
BY DANE HICKS
THE ANDERSON COUNTY REVIEW
TOPEKA Though the state still
doesnt have an approved new congressional district map, the filing deadline
for other local and state offices is still
set for 12 noon on June 1 for those
planning to seek elected office in the
November 2022 general election.
In Anderson County, Republican
Les McGhees First District county
commission seat will be up for election. Neither McGhee nor Garnett
City Commissioner Greg Gwin, whose
position will also be voted this coming
November, have publicly announced if
they plan to seek re-election.
Anderson County Clerk Julie
Wettstein said local election officers
had not yet heard
from the Kansas
Secretary of States
office regarding possible changes to the
regular filing deadline for state offices.
Locally, 12th District
Senator Caryn Tyson
Gwin has announced her
candidacy for Kansas
State
Treasurer.
Tyson will be able to retain her senate
seat with two remaining years on her
present term should she lose the treasurers race. If she wins, 12th District
Republicans will appoint a replacement.
Mark Samsel of Wellsville hasnt
publicly announced whether he will
seek another term as 5th District
Represenative, nor
has Trevor Jacobs,
the representative
from Fort Scott whose
4th Distirct includes
the extreme southeast
corner of Anderson
County.
At least one ballot
McGhee measure is expected to
be voted on this year.

Schmidt files for dismissal of map challenges
TOPEKA Kansas Attorney
General Derek Schmidt
last week filed an amended petition with the Kansas
Supreme Court seeking to
dismiss the latest legal challenge to newly redrawn congressional districts a plan
that if approved would move
Anderson and Franklin
counties from the Second
to the Third Congressional
District.
The latest challenge
was filed on behalf of
Douglas County voters earlier last week in Douglas
County District Court
against Secretary of State
Scott Schwab and Douglas
County Clerk Jamie Shew.
The lawsuit challenges the
constitutionality of the
congressional boundaries
approved last month by the
Kansas Legislature. Schmidt
had previously asked the
Kansas Supreme Court to
dismiss two similar challenges brought by voters in
Wyandotte County.
The map reorganizes the
configuration of the districts
to even up population according to one man, one vote laws.
The Third District is presently some 68,000 people too
large to meet the district targets, so Republican legisla-
tors split Wyandotte county
in half and moved it and the
City of Lawrence, presently
in the Second District, into
the western-focused First
District. The move angered
some Democrats, who said
the move was an attempt to
dilute Democrat clout in the
Second and Third Districts.
Schmidt said bringing the
Friday night activities will be
announced at a later date.

ANDERSON COUNTY COMMISSION
FEBRUARY 28, 2022
Chairman Leslie McGhee called
the meeting of the Anderson County
Commission to order at 9:00 AM on
February 28, 2022 at the Anderson
County
Commission
Room.
Attendance: Leslie McGhee, Present:
David Pracht, Present: Anthony
Mersman, Present. The pledge of allegiance was recited. Minutes from the
previous meeting were approved as
presented.
Road & Bridge
Lester Welsh, Road & Bridge
Supervisor, met with the commission.
He received information from the
State of Kansas regarding a program
that would possibly allocate $50,000
to fix any issues that an inspector
should find. The county would have
to pay an upfront cost of $5,000. The
Commissioners dont think it is advantageous to participate. Lester received
a quote for oil of $2.50/gallon which
is up from last years price of $1.70/
gallon. He will run some numbers to
see how much it will cost in total to
chip and seal or find alternatives.
Solid Waste
Scott Garrett, Solid Waste
Supervisor, met with the commission.
He wanted to let the Commissioners
know that the landfill is still accepting and picking up cardboard. A citizen addressed the City of Garnett
Commissioners stating that the landfill stopped and was needing a way
for the cardboard to be picked up.
The citizen was not cutting the cardboard down enough for it to fit in the
baler and requiring the landfill staff to
accommodate so Scott decided to no
longer pick up the citizens cardboard.
Scott also inquired about extra pay to
drive the trash truck to Allen County at
least 4 days a week. The discussion
was tabled until the following week.
Sheriff
Vern Valentine, Sheriff, met with the
commission. Discussion was held on
sidewalk and curb replacement in front
of the Law Enforcement Center.
Emergency Management
JD
Mersman,
Emergency
Management Director, met with the
commission. JD contacted Mike
Billings, USDA consultant, regarding
a grant that the County received for
the 2021 Rosenbauer Pumper truck.
Documentation was finalized on the
grant. Upon completion of paperwork,
the county was awarded $130,000
instead of the originally awarded
amount of $50,000.
Economic Development
Julie Turnipseed, Economic
Development Director, met with the
commission. Discussion was held on
land banks. The county would be on
board with starting a land bank but
have questions for the City of Garnett
regarding maintenance of properties.
A city/county meeting is to be scheduled for April where more discussion
will continue.
Road & Bridge
Lester Welsh, Road & Bridge
Supervisor, and representatives from
Hall Brothers met with the commission. Hall Brothers presented their
product for roads. It is an asphalt product that would replace chip and seal.
Abatement and Escape
Abatement B22-159 and Escape
E22-112 were approved as presented.

THE ANDERSON COUNTY REVIEW Tuesday, March 8, 2022
Do you want to get well?
In John chapter 5 we read
the account of a trip Jesus
made to Jerusalem for a feast of
the Jews. He stopped by a pool
which was called Bethesda,
which is surrounded by five
covered colonnades. Under
these colonnades a great number of blind, lame and paralyzed people lay putting their
hope in an old superstition
about the magical qualities
of the water when it started
to bubble. One man who was
there had been an invalid for
thirty-eight years. When Jesus
learned of his condition he
asked the man, Do you want
to get well? Instead of answering Jesus question the man
told Jesus why he had never
been healed. He had no one to
help him get in the pool when
the water stirred. The man
had come to believe over these
many years that the only way
he could be healed would be
to be able to get in the pool.
His answer revealed he did
not know who Jesus was. You
would think that when Jesus or
anyone else asked the man the
question his response would
have been an emphatic Yes!.
I believe the man had been paralyzed so long he had come to
terms with the fact that this
was to be his lot in life. This
same attitude can overwhelm
each of us when we have been
WEEKLY DEVOTIONAL
BY DAVID BILDERBACK
faced with repeated failures to
cure our health issues, financial issues or relationship
issues. Just as the man had
become accustomed to his situation over the years so can we.
He had put whatever hope he
had in the superstition about
the magical qualities of the
pool. Many times we place our
hope in things that are really
part of the problem.
When it comes to tough
issues we face in life there are
no magical answers. Maybe
healing is available to us but
that may mean letting go of
what is familiar and comfortable. It means releasing ourselves totally to Gods care. It
means trusting that Jesus is
better than whatever we are
clinging to. Perhaps the real
problem is we fail to understand the power of God and are
willing to settle for less than
the best God has for us.

the Holiness of God.

OPINION
Kansas wind farms are Putins
allies in brutal energy war
Joe Biden voters, Green Energy policy
types and Kansas landowners who greeted wind
farm projects in the state with a big wet kiss
as they ravaged our landscapes over the past
decade shouldnt expect a Christmas card from
Ukraine this year or from anywhere else in
the energy consuming world for that matter.
What they should expect is to own their
share of the devastating loss of life and destruction wrought on the sovereign slavic nation by
its imperial dictator to the north, as well as the
coming energy and economic disaster headed
our way in the United States. Because in reality, the world works just like the old childrens
song says the toe bones connected to the foot
bone, the foot bones connected to the ankle
bone
Its too much to give credit to Putin for the
masterful situation in which he found himself
to pursue his own dreams of rekindling the old
Soviet empire, even though its confirmed that
Russia actively funded anti-fracking and other
social/environmental efforts aimed at weakening Europe over the years. The wave of Green
hysteria took root across Europe, leading to a
massive ramp-up in expensive and inefficient
wind power in Germany for instance. That
move led to skyrocketing home electricity bills
in the Deutschland and a growing dependence
on Russia for its burgeoning gas and oil production to make up for the needs the ridiculous,
subsidized wind farms failed to produce.
If it isnt clear by now, dependence is vulnerability.
The problem with wind power, besides its
outrageous expense of course, is that it cant
produce enough juice to meet peoples needs.
Relying on it makes populations more dependent of foreign sources of carbon fuels sources
that actually work which have to be bought
to maintain real power levels. But the hipness
of wind farms and the Greta Thunberg guilt
trip in Europe that forced more Russian carbon
energy sales was nothing more than a cash cow
for Putin until the U.S. elected the bumbling Joe
Biden president.
Putin must have been giddy or as giddy as a
former KGB agent can be at the news Bidens
first actions as president would be to choke off
the thriving U.S. energy sector that had for the
first time in modern history made the U.S. independent of foreign energy. Following the leftist
and Putin-benefiting playbook, Biden forced
the U.S. back into the Paris Climate Agreement
and stopped new oil and gas leases on federal

lands. He canceled the Keystone XL pipeline,
stepped up stagnating environmental rules on
oil and gas emissions and increased the social
cost of carbon another ridiculous bureaucratic metric used by the federal environmental
wonks and even some state regulators to help
thwart policies that would foster dependable oil
and coal as energy sources.
Another sad reality is that our own Kansas
landowners played their role in this disaster as
well.
Though leftist Green Energy types imbedded
in the federal government created the subsidy-dependent wind farm industry and forced
electric utilities into purchasing their outrageously inefficient and expensive power, it was
farmers and landowners in rural Kansas and
across the rest of the Midwest who contracted
their land for the thousands of industrial turbine sites that grew this net-loss industry in
the United States. Home electricity bills have
shown the spiking results of the growth of
wind power. Following the disastrous path of
Europe, reality-disconnected power company
executives are now actively shutting down coal
and gas fired electric plants that provide firm
power when the wind doesnt blow, banking on
miraculously getting the power they need in a
pinch from…somewhere.
As in Europe, the wind industry fantasy has
made the U.S. more dependent on foreign energy. Landowners in the U.S. who got in bed with
this devil cant escape some of the blame.
With Bidens deadly Keystone Cops performance in his retreat from Afghanistan, Putin
realized an invigorating trifecta. Nations now

Dear Democrat in denial. Get out of your imaginary world and while youre at it, go back and

Durham says Sussman told the FBI he wasnt

of the Clinton campaign and the tech firm both.
Where theres smoke theres fire. Good ole

Our president Biden said at the State Of

Biden buy American oil instead of Russian oil?
He needs to practice what he preaches. Thank

I swear you know I watch the Facebook pages
of some of my friends and other pages and I
wonder, when youre all up about saying youre
praying for someone and offering prayers for
this and that and whoever is in trouble or
having a hard time or a tragedy, are you really
saying a prayer for them or are you just saying
it so it makes you look good? If youre saying
youre going to pray for someone, please, do the
actual prayer for them. Saying it and not doing
it doesnt help anyone and I dont imagine God
appreciates it.

Kansas: Help Texas in border fight
America faces a crisis at our southwest border.
During 2021, authorities encountered about
two million migrants at the border, up from
fewer than 550,000 the year before, not counting those who eluded detection. That wave of
humanity has overwhelmed border security,
and thats a problem for Kansas.
Last month, I traveled to Texas to meet with
Gov. Greg Abbott and other Texas officials to
see the border crisis myself. During a two-day
summit with other state attorneys general, we
saw the following:
The unfinished border wall, riddled with
incomplete segments shockingly easy to walk
through and around. Taxpayers have bought
steel to build more, but it sits rusting in piles
because the Biden administration will neither
install it nor allow Texas to.
Front-line federal agents just trying to
do their jobs. Unfortunately, our interaction
with federal agents was limited because the
evening before our arrival, their superiors in
Washington abruptly canceled our briefings
without explanation.
Dedicated Texas officers enforcing state
laws near the unsecured border. They know
the reality on the ground. They showed us

which houses and other structures on the
Mexican side are owned and used by the
cartels and explained how cartels pay spotters often children to sit along the Rio
Grande and report the location of patrol boats
so smugglers know when the coast is clear.
In our proud nation of immigrants, emotional immigration politics too often obscure
this tragic truth: There are more crime victims in Kansas today because the federal government is failing on border security.
During my time as attorney general, our
office successfully prosecuted an illegal alien
in southeast Kansas who shot an Oklahoma
police officer, kidnapped a Kansas motorist,
invaded a Kansas residence and attempted
to murder a Kansas officer. In north-central
Kansas, we prosecuted an illegal alien for sex
crimes against a young child. And we prosecuted an illegal alien in southwest Kansas for
murder.
After the Kansas Supreme Court incorrectly ruled that federal law shielded certain
illegal aliens from state identity theft laws, we
appealed to the U.S. Supreme Court. I argued
that case myself, and we won.
These crimes are among many committed in Kansas by people here illegally. Much
violent crime here is connected to the smuggling of drugs and people across the border.
Deported criminals too often easily return to
Kansas and commit new crimes.
The Kansas Department of Corrections
recently reported 246 inmates in Kansas prisons are subject to possible deportation upon
release; county jails and federal prisons hold
more.

Ukraine illustrates nationalisms finest hour
If anyone had any doubt that Ukraine has
its own national identity, the early days of the
Russian invasion should have eliminated it.
Theres been the stiff resistance of
Ukraines fighters, the former president giving interviews in the streets of Kyiv in battle
gear, the ordinary men and women insulting and defying Russian soldiers, and above
all, the comedian-turned-president, the now
legendary Volodymyr Zelenskyy, refusing to
leave his capital as Russian forces bear down
on the city seeking to capture or kill him.
This is all so compelling because there is
something inherently stirring about a people
defending their homeland from a would-be
imperial overlord.
The fight to save Ukraine represents a
righteous nationalism. The Ukrainians arent
defending democracy per se or freedom in the
sense of abstract rights — although Vladimir
Putins Russia is a threat to both — but their
land and birthright. They are struggling for
national self-determination, and even national survival.
Even in a globalized world, even when
patriotism is not nearly as strong a force
as it once was, even among Eurocrats who
want to subsume Europes nations in an EU
superstate, Ukraines struggle still strikes a
profound chord.
In his speech prior to the war, making a
direct appeal to the Russian people, President
Zelenskyy spoke of his memories of Ukraine.
No one in Russia knows the meaning of
these places, these streets, these names, these

events, he said. These are all alien to you,
unfamiliar. This is our land, and this is our
history.
We are not part of one whole, he
explained. You cannot swallow us up. We are
different. But this difference is not a reason
for enmity. We want to determine our own
course and build our own history — peacefully,
calmly and honestly.
Zelenskyy was speaking a nationalists language of love for his peoples history, land and
traditions. As G. K. Chesterton once wrote,
Cosmopolitanism gives us one country, and
it is good; nationalism gives us a hundred
countries, and every one of them is the best.
Of course, Ukraines status as a nation is
contested by Vladimir Putin, who claims that
it rightfully belongs to Russia. His revanchist vision is often described an aggressive
nationalism, but it is really a drive for empire.
In his own lurid speech before starting the
war, Putin laid out a spurious version of
history wherein Ukrainian nationhood was
an invention of the Soviet Union. He attacked
the virus of nationalist ambitions, and
claimed after the invasion began that Russian
troops were only fighting against nationalist
groups in Ukraine.
Putin is armed with newer weapons, but
hes acting every bit the traditional Russian
imperialist. Already in the 15th century, a
crude Russian state ruled an enormous swath
of territory. By the end of the 19th century, it
had become one of the largest empires ever in
terms of sheer landmass. This empire was lost
with Russias defeat in World I, reconstituted
by the Soviets, and lost again at the end of the
Cold War. Putin seeks to revive a version of
this project and notably referred in his prewar speech to the collapse of the historical
Russia known as the USSR.
Zelenskyy and the Ukrainians are fighting
for independence against this behemoth and,
in so doing, giving Ukraine new national
heroes and national lore that will sustain it
even if the worst comes.
The philosopher Jean-Jacques Rousseau
once wrote of Poland, another country constantly under threat from imperial Russia:
The virtue of her citizens, their patriotic
zeal, the particular form that national institutions can give to their spirit, that is the
only rampart always ready to defend it, and

this competition to Colony and

The YEC Series helps students learn valuable life skills
such as creative problem solving and confidently presenting their ideas to others, said
Amara Kniep, product manager for E-Community programs.
The classroom learning and
mentorship they receive in

their local YEC Series event
can also help students feel
more connected to their communities and help them identi-

During the 2020-2021 season,
898 students from 47 communities hosted 44 local entrepreneurship competitions as part
of the YEC Series. The 20212022 academic year marks the
ninth annual YEC Series coordinated by NetWork Kansas

The annual YEC Series culminates in a statewide championship, where the top students

legal challenges directly in the
Kansas Supreme Court would
enable an expedited decision,
which is needed because of
election timelines and a June

in the coming November election. He said it also squarely presents the federal question, which the Douglas and
Wyandotte county plaintiffs
carefully avoided, whether the
U.S. Constitution prohibits
Kansas state courts from entertaining state-law challenges to
federal congressional district
boundaries.
The Elections Clause [of
the U.S. Constitution] commits
the redistricting power to state
legislatures, and no Kansas

any role in evaluating the validity of duly enacted redistricting
plans, Schmidt wrote.
Schmidt also asked the
Kansas Supreme Court to rule
that the Kansas Constitution

just as the U.S. Supreme Court
has ruled the U.S. Constitution
does not.

PiDay is an unofficial holiday commemorating the mathematical constant pi. Pi Day is
observed on March 14 (or 3/14 in
month/day date format), since
3, 1 and 4 are the most significant digits of pi in the decimal
form. In 2009 the U.S. House of

K-State researchers uncover new clues for improving wheat
By Pat Melgares, K-State
Research and Extension news
service
MANHATTAN, Kan. — Kansas
State University researchers
continue to unlock the complexity of the wheat genome,
recently publishing findings
of a study that characterized
numerous genes duplicated thousands of years ago to
understand how they control
wheat yield and other desirable
traits.
Wheat geneticist Eduard
Akhunov, the director of
K-States Wheat Genetic
Resources Center, said his
teams research may lead to
greater opportunities for breeders to perform targeted breeding that can increase grain
size and number ultimately
increasing yields.
Akhunov said the researchers studied the role of gene
copies available from each of
the respective genomes in polyploid crops, those that contain
more than two sets of chromosomes, in shaping main agronomic traits.
Bread wheat, he added, is
polyploid, formed nearly 10,000
years ago from merging the
genomes of two wild ancestors:
tetraploid wild emmer wheat
(which has a genome formula
known as AB) and diploid goatgrass (with genome formula D).
As a result, Akhunov said,
most genes in wheat exist in
three copies, one from each of
the A, B and D genomes.
This gene redundancy creates a number of possibilities
for interactions between genes
and has, over time, contributed to new adaptations, making wheat capable of growing
and producing grain in more
diverse climatic conditions,
he said.
In the current study, K-State
researchers tested combinations of the gene copies to see
what impact they would have
on wheats growth and productivity.
Normally, gene copies
from each of (three) respective genomes in wheat are
expressed in equal proportions, Akhunov said. But we
found that there is a relatively
small subset of genes where
copies from different wheat
genomes are expressed at different levels, referred to as
an imbalanced expression of
Farmers Market vendor

The Garnett Farmers Market

genes.
The imbalanced expression
of genes, he added, turned out
to have a positive effect on the
wheat plant, in many cases
increasing grain size, weight
and number.
Our study suggests that
over many years, breeders
have been selecting combinations of imbalanced genes
that positively impacted yield
in diverse climatic environments, Akhunov said.
Important for wheat growers: breeders could use this
knowledge to develop new
high-yielding wheat varieties
capable of growing in a variety
of climates.
According to an article
from the National Center for
Biotechnology Information,
polyploidy is a major force in
the evolution of both wild and
cultivated plants. Scientists
believe polyploid organisms
exhibit increased vigor and
— in some cases — outperform
their diploid relatives in several aspects.
K-States work on this
project is summarized in
the Feb. 11 issue of Nature
Communications.
Akhunov said the research
represents a large effort led
by his research lab in collaboration with the Wheat
Coordinated
Agricultural
Project, and funded by the
USDA National Institute of
Food and Agriculture, and
the Bill and Melinda Gates
Foundation.
The project was part of the
International Wheat Yield
Partnership in which wheat
researchers around the world
are cooperating to find solutions to increase wheat yields.

THE ANDERSON COUNTY REVIEW Tuesday, March 8, 2022
Bulldogs come up just Lady Vikings drop 2nd
short of 1st round upset round substate game
BURLINGTON – The #5 seeded ACHS Bulldogs were edged
out last Monday, February 28th
by #4 seed Burlington 54-51 in
Burlington.
Just 4 days earlier, these two
teams met and Burlington ran
away with a 59-33 lopsided win.
It was a tight battle all night
but it seemed the Bulldogs
were playing from behind from
the start. Burlington had the
upperhand in the first half
with a 13-11 lead after the first
quarter and jumped out to a
25-19 advantage heading into
intermission.
The Bulldogs weren't going
to go down easily though.
ACHS kept within striking dis-
tance with a 16-15 advantage
in the third quarter to make
the score 45-40 heading into the
fourth.
Although the Bulldogs
scrapped their way to a 16-14
advantage in the fourth, they
came up just short of pulling
off the opening round upset.
Burlington would go on to
down the top seed Frontenac
in the following round before
coming up just shy of a state
birth with a 41-34 loss to Girard
in the championship game.
Before the championship game
loss, Burlington had won 6
straight games and 9 of their
final 10.
Lady Bulldogs drop opener
GIRARD The Lady Bulldogs
entered substate with a #6 seed
and squared off against #3 seed
Girard and came up on the losing side, 46-29.
Girard would lose their second round game in lopsided
fashion, 45-21, to a streaking
Frontenac team that entered
with a second seed and a 12-5
record. Frontenac would go on
to qualify for state by knocking
off top seeded and 17-1 Eureka.
The offensive woes of the
Bulldogs would be evident in

the first quarter as Girard took
over from the opening tip and
led 16-0 after the first quarter.
The rest of the game Girard
would keep the Bulldogs from
having any chance at making
a serious run. Girard led at
halftime 26-8.
The second half Girard
would be outscored by ACHS
21-20, but it wasn't nearly
enough to threaten the lead for
the home squad.
Brooklyn Kurtz led all scorers with 11 points.
RICHMOND – The Central
Heights Lady Vikings came up
short of the substate championship, but showed vast improvement throughout the season.
In the opening round of substate, the Vikings knocked off
Lyndon in a defensive battle,
30-27.
The Vikings were clinging
to a 9-6 lead after the first quarter and doubled their lead at
halftime, 18-12.
Central Heights appeared
to be in control opening the
second half with a solid third
quarter as they limited Lyndon
to just 3 points in the period but countered with just 5
points to lead 23-15.
Lyndon made a furious
attempt at a comeback over the
final couple of minutes but fell
just short as the Lady Vikings
held on.
Lily Meyer and Cameron
Peel paced the Vikings with 10
points each.
In their second round contest, they held strong early on
leading 6-5 after the first quarter before falling behind 11-9 at
halftime to Mission Valley.
Mission Valley blew things
open in the second half as they
tripled their first half production with 33 points en route to
an easy 44-26 win.
Bailey Brockus led the
Vikings with 8 points. Cameron
Peel added 6, Erykah Haynes
5, Lily Meyer 4 and Melaney
Chrisjohn 3 points.
