Garnett city workers lend a hand to storm-smacked town
Cities in region offer aid
when the chips are down,
and Garnett crew responds
BY CHELSEY DALBINI
THE ANDERSON COUNTY REVIEW
LAHARPE Ruth Stafford Peale,
co-founder of the Christian periodical Guideposts, is often cited as the
author of the quote See a need and
fill it.
The quote is applicable to a lot of
different situations, but on the evening of July 14, it seemed to be an
attitude that applied to local City of
Garnett employees Donnie Dilley, Roy
Salazar, Quenton Trammel, Josh Pate,
and Kyle Kobold.
During that afternoon, a series of
storm cells formed in Kansas that
grew into a strong squall line that
wreaked havoc across eastern Kansas
and western Missouri. The path of
destruction included wind damage,
downed power lines, widespread tree
damage, and loss of power throughout
the area. The highest reported wind
gusts came from western Johnson
County, where according to the
National Oceanic and Atmospheric
Administration, a personal weather
station recorded an 89 mile per hour
gust just west of Lenexa.
In his weekly report to city commissioners, Garnett City Manager
Travis Wilson stated that he received
a call from Director of Emergency
Management and City Commissioner
Mark Locke stating that LaHarpe
needed mutual aid on the evening of
July 14. In desperate need of chainsaw wielding manpower, a text was
sent out to City employees by Wilson.
The quintet of men answered, and
they volunteered to clear trees and
debris to aid LaHarpe. The men
worked for six hours, diligently lending a much-needed hand to the Allen
County neighbors.
Allen County sustained more damage than Anderson County that night.
Nearly a week after the storm some
Allen County residents were still
without power, and many more needed permanent solutions to the quick
patch repair work that restored power
in some homes.
The call for mutual aid is one that
City of Garnett employees historically
have been quick to answer.
In the five years Ive been here,
weve asked for help of Iola, Ottawa,
and Gardner,
Wilson said. As
good neighbors
we generally send
whatever aid we
can if someone
asks, and we
have people that
are willing to go
help.
The damage
estimates of the
July 14 storm are
still unavailable,
but Allen County
locals regularly

that swept the

Unpaid property taxes

County sees $71,000
jump in delinquencies,
list published today
BY DANE HICKS
THE ANDERSON COUNTY REVIEW
GARNETT The countys
annual report of unpaid property taxes shows a 22 percent
increase from last year, as well
as close to a 6 percent increase
in the number of actual delinquent properties.
The figures published on
pages 8-9 of todays Review are
part of a state law requiring
public notice of property tax
payment status once a year
in newspapers, and includes
properties classified as delinquent through 2022.
Those delinquencies totaled
$388,095 unpaid on 461 parcels
in the most recent August 1
total, compared to some 436 in
2022 who owed around $317,500
total. The number of affected property owners and the
amount owed has declined in
recent years after a high in 2018
of 482 owners and $398,000 in
unpaid taxes.
The countys taxing dynamic includes a number of factors,
including the spiking values
of residential properties in the
past several years due to previously cheap mortgage rates,
higher costs for county government due to post-Covid inflation in goods and services, as
well as increasing labor costs
following the end of government-forced Covid lockdowns.
Anderson County has taken
a more aggressive stance in
recent years to schedule
periodic tax sales, in which
delinquent properties are condemned and foreclosed upon

Tutoring, other education assistance grants
still available to fix Covid learning loss
BY DAVID HICKS
THE SENTINEL
TOPEKA The Kansas Education
Enrichment Program (KEEP), using
$50 million in federal Covid-19 relief
funds, offers $1,000 grants to eligible Kansas students to overcome the
learning loss incurred during the
pandemic.
Some 12,500 students have already
benefitted from the program, begun
in February, so only about 25% of
grant funds have been expended.
The program is administered by the
Kansas Office of Recovery in conjunction with Merit International, a
national government platform service. Taimarie Adams is executive
director of grants and scholarships
for Merit:
Once families know about the program, theyre really interested. But
we also know that families are busy,
and they might know this is a great
resource for the students in their
houses, but that it might be complicated, or that they have to fill out a
lot of paperwork; so one of the things
weve done, in partnership with the
Office of Recovery, is make this a
very easy, seamless application process.
KEEP is available to eligible stu-
dents who are:
Kansas residents
Between the age of 5 (as of August
31, 2022) and 18 (as of May 31, 2023)
Enrolled in a K-12 program
Students with disabilities through
the age of 21 and students above 18
who are still in high school, with
proof of active school enrollment in a
K-12 program.
All students in a family can
receive the grants, and eligibility is
determined by household income.
The income limits for households
not enrolled in the Supplemental
Nutrition Assistance Program
(SNAP) and no children in foster
care are 300% of the Federal Poverty
Guidelines. For example, a family of
four with income below $90,000 can
participate.
Grant funds are either paid directly to approved suppliers or are reimbursed to families for items such as:
classes, tutoring, school supplies,
musical instruments fees and classes,
technology and even education-oriented summer camps. Families can
monitor spending and balances
through a digital wallet.

WELSH
MARCH 4, 1974 – JULY 20, 2023
Nicole Lynn Martin, age 49
of Paola, Kansas passed away
on July 20, 2023.
N i c o l e
was born on
March 4, 1974
in Garnett,
Kansas. She
was the second of three
children born
to Frank and
Martin
Joyce Martin.
At the young
age of three,
Nicole started school and early
learning studies at Lakemary
Center in Paola. She received
her high school diploma from
Lakemary at the age of 21.
At that time she transferred
to TRI-KO in Osawatomie,
Kansas. She lived in different
residential houses, the last
one being a duplex with her
roommates Delia and Jessica.
Nicole attended the workshop
Monday Friday. In the beginning she did different jobs,
her most favorite was bagging Rabbit Creek products.
She always said that her least
favorite job was counting and
boxing straws. In the last few
years, clients spent their time
doing crafts, exercising, going
to the Ozone to swim, coloring and doing word games.
Nicole loved to do puzzles and
play card games. Pink was
her favorite color. Birthday
and Christmas gifts always
included something pink. Her
second favorite thing was butterflies. Butterflies of any and
all colors. But the most important thing was spending time
with her family which meant
she got to have whatever she
wanted to eat, could watch her
favorite tv programs and sing
whatever songs she wanted to.
She loved the holidays especially Christmas because of
the music. Luke Bryan and
Garth Brooks were two of her
favorite country singers along
with Brookes & Dun song Boot
Scootin Boogie. She often
attended dances after Ryans
football games and the students
always asked her to line dance
with them when this song was
played. Nicole is survived by
her parents Frank and Joyce
Martin of Garnett; brother
Chris, his wife Jen and daughter Lilly of Columbia, Missouri;
brother Ryan, his wife Sonya
and sons Josh and Eli Garnett;
Aunt Shari Friesen of Garnett;
Aunt and Uncle Cindy and

K-State food safety
expert shares tips for
packing school lunches
MANHATTAN, Kan. As
school resumes, so does packing kids lunches. Following
food safety procedures is essential for parents in helping to
prevent foodborne illness, said
Kansas State University food
scientist Karen Blakeslee.
Start by washing your
hands, Blakeslee said. This
can prevent many food safety issues. If taking lunch to
school, keep cold food cold, and
hot food hot.
Blakeslee said parents
should remind their kids to
not share their lunches with
other kids because of the risk
of food allergens. She also suggests packing foods that dont
require temperature control to
keep them safe.
Many whole fresh fruits,
single serve fruit cups, whole
grain crackers, peanut butter
or other nut butters, and dried
meat sticks are safe to pack,
Blakeslee said. If packing cold
or hot food, use ice packs and
insulated lunch containers to
keep them cold. If taking hot
food, use a separate insulated
container or bottle to keep that
food hot.
Additionally,
Blakeslee
encourages parents to ask kids
to help plan school lunches,
and take them grocery shopping.
If they help choose and prepare the lunch, they will be
excited to eat it, she said.
Blakeslee, who also is coordinator of K-States Rapid
Response Center for Food
Safety, publishes a monthly
newsletter called You Asked
It! that provides numerous tips
on food safety. More information is also available from local
extension offices in Kansas.

Where do you
find comfort?
In the first chapter of
Acts we read how Jesus
was, Taken up before
their (apostles) very
eyes, and a cloud hid
him from their sight.
Two questions quickly
come to mind. Where
did he go and what is he
doing?
In Ephesians 1:20
we read, that power is
like the working of his
(Gods) mighty strength, which
he exerted in Christ when he
raised him from the dead and
seated him at his (Gods) right
hand in the heavenly realms.
So Jesus ascended to the
Father. He is today seated with
God. Jesus ascended to heaven
to go to his cosmic kingship.
If we go back and examine
the original temple we find
that it had an inner most room
called the Holy of Hollies which
was the dwelling place of God.
Once per year the Priest would
enter this area to offer a sacrifice for the sins of the people
during the Old Testament era.
This area was separated from
the rest of the temple by a curtain. In Mark 15:38 we read at
the death of Jesus, The curtain was torn in two from top to
bottom. What this meant was
there would be no more need
for the priest to offer the yearly
sacrifice for the ultimate sacrifice had been made. Our great

the dead, ascended to heaven
and sits at the right hand of
God where he prays his great
priestly prayer for all believers. To me that provides a
great deal of comfort at night
when I lie down. Where do you
seek your comfort? Jesus said,
who so ever will may come.
The old hymn says, Nothing
in my hand I bring simply to
the cross I cling. The words
have been spoken. All that
remains is for you to come to
Jesus.

OPINION
I was born a poor black child
I was born a poor black child.
Steve Martin, The Jerk, 1979
For those of us with at least as much gumption
as God gave a goose, the blowup over the recent
NBC article dispelling transgender theory by
employing brace yourself logic against
transracialism is just the latest comedic pit
stop in the Lefts Indianapolis 500 of stupidity.
You know this constant and frantic running in circles about the various identity labels
modern Democrats and other Leftists have to
embrace in order to gather enough weirdos to
maintain a political movement. For us, its as
funny as a talking duck joke; for them, NBCs
accidental ripping off of the bandaid holding
identity logic in place is as dire as a cancer diagnosis.
Thats because if the cudgels of both the
transgender movement and the sacred cow of
diversity (meaning anti-white and anti-male,
unless youre gay, trans or a turnip) were to collapse to a sudden acceptance of scientific reality,
two of the chairs four legs upon which modern
Democrats rest would disappear. Theyd be left
with only raising the price of gasoline and prosecuting Donald Trump as reasons you should vote
for them.
So its understandable why the NBC article
by Emi Tuyentnhi Tran dispelling the idea that
one can change ones race in the face of obvious
scientific and cultural anchors struck such fear
in Leftists and the transgender movement they
champion. Of course you can change your race;
because Democrats have already established
that you can change your sex, right? So, whats
the dif?
Since before she hit double digits, Alisa, 15,
said she has felt a special connection with Japan,
writes Tran. The high school student, who asked
to be anonymous for fear of being doxxed online,
was born in Ukraine and lives in Maryland, but
she now goes by the Japanese name Miyuki and
listens to subliminals that promise she will
wake up and be Japanese Practitioners of what
they call race change to another, or RCTA,
purport to be able to manifest physical changes
in their appearance and even their genetics to
become a different race. They tune in to subliminal videos they claim can give them an East
Asian appearance or Korean DNA.
Its the green flag andwere off!
Tran goes on to dispel the idea of changing
race with testimony from experts.
Its just belief, said Jamie Cohen, an assistant professor of cultural and media studies at

Queens College, City University of New York. It
doesnt ever really work, because its not doing
anything, but they have convinced themselves
that it works because theres other people who
have convinced themselves, as well.
Tran then tortures a couple of other experts
who fumble with an explanation that race isnt
based on science or genetics but instead on lived
experiences passed down through generations,
which you cant just, well, appropriate willy-nilly. Steve Martin and others might, however,
disagree.
Sort of like I dunno womanhood? Which is
also, well, based on science and genetics, as well
as generations of lived experience, prejudice and
systemic inequality, right?
Of course Im saying the quiet part out loud
a graveyard Tran whistles past but one which
slams into the brain of anyone cursed with
gumption who reads the article. If I can appropriate womanhood without ever having had so
much as an estrus cycle or not being allowed to
vote, why cant I appropriate another race?
Therein lies the terror for the Left and a new
mission for their legions of defenders in the
mainstream media. Leftism has already alienated women by throwing the fairer sex under the
bus and allowing men to displace them. If they
lose the other Holy Grail of race along a similar
dynamic, the Al Sharptons, Ibrim X Kendis and
Nikole Hanna-Joneses lose their bread and butter.
Its like in the new Mission Impossible movie
(spoiler alert) when the Russian submarine fires
a torpedo at a ghost image and the explosive
ends up locking on their own sub instead.
In the hilarious culture battle between gumption
and silliness, we can only hope. ###

For family farm operations, theres strength in numbers
Ive learned several important lessons in
agriculture during my decades of farming
experience.
One important one is its harder to go it
alone than it is to be part of an agricultural
group. My wife, Wendy, and I are members of
several organizations, some based in agriculture, others not. We have found that having
a collective voice gives us a better handle on
what is going on in our local community, state
and nation. Our agriculture memberships are
important to us in our never-ending quest to
stay profitable. Every group we belong to fits
a different niche.
The group we are most involved with is
National Farmers Organization. We have
been members since the day we purchased
our first cows. National Farmers offers the
tools we need to not just sell our animals, but
market them for what they are truly worth.
Whether it is calves that go to feedlots or culls
going to slaughter, we sell together with our
friends and neighbors. This gives us a larger
say in the marketplace. By marketing our
animals together, it allows us to split our steer
and heifers into weight breaks that fit each
calf correctly. This allows us to merchandise
our animals more effectivley, therefore maximizing our dollars.
We receive more money per pound on 500pound animals than we do on our 700-pound-

ers. All our calves are sorted into load lots of
like-size animals. No one buying 700-pound
steers wants anything close to 500 pounds
coming off the truck. Like most ranchers, we
get one big check a year. It is nice to know that
our friends are in the same mindset we are. As
a group, we listen to many opinions, and there
is always discussion before a deal is made. It
feels satisfying when 15 ranchers are on the
same page and all pulling together to make
each of us successful financially.
We are also members of R-CALF. I have
attended their national convention several times and our state National Farmers
Organization has invited R-CALF speakers
to our state meetings. R-CALF fits a niche
that we could not afford to fill as individual
ranchers. Their goal and purpose is to fight
the large multi-national companies which
dominate our food processing system. I have
always been a proponent of Country of Origin
Labeling. That is one of R-CALFs banner
issues. The group brings together not just
ranchers voices, but also their accumulative
financial power as well. This allows our voices to be amplified. Alone, we never could have
that much power.
Montana Farmers Union (MFU) is another
group which we are deeply involved with.
They fill another niche in our ranching life.
Their big three issues are: cooperation; education; and legislation. Wendy and I have
been active in all of these segments. Like
many states, Montana needs more livestock
processing facilities. MFU addressed this
need by starting a processing plant in Havre,
Montana.
The plant will work with the state university in Havre as they begin a meat processing
curriculum. Wendy and I invested money
towards the plant and are now members of
the processing co-op, Montana Premium
Processing. We have delivered some animals
to that facility and were glad they perform
quality work at reasonable prices. The educa

Kamala Harris desperate slavery smear targets DeSantis
There have been so many poisonous and
stupid lies about Florida since 2020, its almost
hard to keep track, but the latest may be the
most outrageous.
As you might have heard thanks to the vice
president of the United States, Florida allegedly wants to teach its students that slavery
benefited slaves.
In reality, the Florida curriculum on slavery is extensive and includes pretty much
everything youd want a child to know about
this enormity. The occasion for the Kamala
Harris smear is one line that says, Instruction
includes how slaves developed skills which, in
some instances, could be applied for their personal benefit.
This is not the first thing, or even the 19th,
that youd want students to learn about slavery, but it is also indisputably true.
No one is saying the enslaved benefited
from slavery.
Its not an endorsement of slavery to point
out that slaves looked for every crack in the
system to try to improve themselves and gain
some autonomy — rather, its an endorsement
of the initiative and resilience of an oppressed
people operating in the worst of circumstances.
We are supposed to believe that enslaved
African Americans strained against their
awful condition in every way — learning to
read, worshipping on their own, defying their
masters when they could, creating an elaborate system of escape, but they never, ever
learned a skill to their own benefit.
This is, of course, nonsense. The Advanced
Placement African American Studies curriculum that Florida has rejected contains almost
exactly the same language about skills as
the states curriculum — without causing a
NATIONAL COMMENTARY
RICH LOWRY, King Features Syndicate
firestorm of criticism.
Some of the most honored African
American figures in our history took advantage of whatever ability they had, while
enslaved, to improve themselves and learn.
In Baltimore, Frederick Douglass famously
became a ship caulker and brought in $6 to
$9 a week, rightly resenting the right of the
robber exercised by his owner, who took his
earnings.
In his extraordinary African Founders:
How Enslaved People Expanded American
Ideals, David Hackett Fischer brings to light
other lesser-known examples. He notes the
example of one Captain David Stodder, the
leading shipbuilder in Baltimore in the late
18th century. As of 1790, about two dozen of
his workers were slaves, and he freed them
in his will. Among these slaves, Fischer
writes, were some of his most highly skilled
workers.
Or consider George R. Roberts, who was
probably born a slave in southern Maryland.
He became an experienced seaman and even-
tually came home to Baltimore, bought a
small house in the happy neighborhood that
is still called Canton, and became prominent
in the civic life of the city.
Or Robert Lemmons, born a slave in Texas.
He learned from a rancher who employed him
and became extremely adept at handling mustangs. Freed after the Civil War, according
to Fischer, he saved his profits, invested in
land, built a holding of 1,200 acres, became a
successful rancher, rented some of his land,
added another business, and became a local
money lender.
Was slavery good for these men? Absolutely
not. The point is what they accomplished
despite slavery, not because of it.
Two can play the Kamala Harris game, by
the way.
In her famous 1619 Project essay, The New
York Times writer Nikole Hannah-Jones
writes that: Black people were not chattel.
And so the process of seasoning, instead of
erasing identity, served an opposite purpose:
In the void, we forged a new culture all our
own.
There she goes — saying slavery served
some good, that it was seasoning.
Imagine if the Florida curriculum said that
slavery gave us African American hair styles?
Thered be outrage, but Hannah-Jones says
it: Todays avant-garde nature of black hairstyles and fashion displays a vibrant reflection of enslaved peoples determination to feel
fully human through self-expression.
The left wouldnt have to deny the historical record or tie itself into knots if it werent
so determined to lie about DeSantis, but that
imperative overwhelms everything else.

component of the success of
that organization. Our son and
daughter attended MFUs summer camp for four years, learning about co-ops and other farming issues.
We traveled to Washington

We are members of a few
other ag groups too, but National
Farmers, R-CALF and Montana
Farmers Union offer elements
quite different from one anoth-

it is just that simple.

Advance enrollment for the August

the list submitted by the schools office.

City of Greeley is experiencing a serious water shortage due to the continued drought. City officials at Greeley

Police officials have reported they
have no leads in the investigation of
the death of Mrs. Wilma Willoughby,
whose skeletal remains were found in
a hayfield near Ottawa on Monday. The
mother of three was last seen July 19 as
she was leaving the Olathe Community
Hospital where she was a nurse. Mrs.
Willoughby is the fifth homicide victim found in this area since March
of this year when three persons, Mrs.
Hazel Avery, Steven Avery, and Gary
Longfellow were found shot in their car
near Ottawa and then in April with a
still unidentified male was found southeast of Garnett in a field. Vandalism at
Greeley following the Greeley Days celebration last Saturday night has resulted in a decision by Greeley businessmen not to have Greeley Days again.
The concession stand was damaged as
well as the Moon walk and the fences
around rides in the park. One youth has
been arrested and brought to Garnett
awaiting charges.

A budget of some $3,509,000 for the
1994 operation year will be before the
Anderson County Commission on
Monday with the annual budgetary
meeting is held. The largest single cost
in any line item rests with the special liability fund, an expense which
received zero planned funding last year
but which this year has been projected
as $105,000. This fund is used to pick
up money owed when the county is
involved in a lawsuit not covered by
insurance. Anderson County should
have its first sale of delinquent tax land
in some twenty-six years by this fall if
all goes according to plan. According to
local attorney Terry Solander since he
filed the needed documents in court to
start the process leading up to the sale
of 20 parcels, three of the owners have
cleared their taxes off the books and no
longer owe the delinquent amount. This
leaves seventeen parcels of property
in the count to go on the auction block
sometime this fall. The Garnett City

Those charges were compounded after Briggs was subsequently

costs of upkeep on those school buildings. The topic of closing any or all of the
schools in the communities of Greeley,
Mont Ida, and Westphalia has been procrastinated since the late 1980s, but
fear of the funding shortfall and declining enrollment rate may make the conversation one for the very near future.
USD 365 approved a $12.2 million budget
for the coming school year with some
help from the federal government. With
the reduction of some $40,000 in state
funding due to forecasted enrollment,
the return of 4 mills of Local Option
Budget financing for capital improvements and an authorized expenditure
increase of $1.4 million over the previous year, the budget was shored up by
the Bush Administrations No Child
Left Behind, policy.

Anderson County Hospital officials
plan to have an official groundbreaking ceremony for the new construction next week. The location will be
directly behind the current facility
and a reception is planned to follow at
the Knights of Columbus Hall. Fewer
Anderson County property owners owe
fewer dollars in delinquent taxes this
year according to the annual report.
The total amount of delinquent taxes
for 2012 is $295,539. Down significantly
from the preceding three years. Many
of the recent internet outages have been
attributed to construction crews that
cut through the fiber and copper lines.
CenturyLink customers in Eastern
Kansas have reported numerous outages in recent months, and the most
current outage was caused when road
construction crews on US Highway 56
near Baldwin City cut through a fiber
optic cable. The outage lasted between
four to five hours.
was being unfairly harassed by sheriffs department investigations.
The incidents and subsequent
charges occurred roughly concurrently with Briggs run for governor
in the Republican Party Primary
last August, in which he garnered
80,000 votes in the statewide contest against Attorney General Derek
Schmidt, who later lost the general
election to Laura Kelly.

Maybe someone could draw
up an image of a cow standing in a farm pond wearing
an umbrella hat. Of course,
that image would suggest that
theres enough water in our
farm ponds in the first place
which would not be accurate
based on our current status.
Since dried-up ponds on our
farm is the current situation,
maybe an image of a cow hiding in the shade of the trees,
or a cow sipping from a large
straw coming out of a stock
tank would be more symbolic
of our present condition.
I wonder if someone could
create an artistic rendering of
our dryland corn or dryland
soybeans waving a white flag
and saying, We Give Up!
Surely my weather app will
update any day now with an
image of a simple, pleasant
sun partially behind a cloud.
Perhaps an image of a cloud
with raindrops will also soon
appear. Surely the images on
my weather app will change
and suggest that we are getting to the end of this heat. Im
not sure when the weather app
image updates will happen, but
I guarantee Im checking for
those changes on a daily basis
with the hope that the end of
the Dog Days of Summer are
near.

The summer heat of 2023
continues to make itself known.
While I hear the local weather
personalities referring to this
heat as part of the Dog Days
of Summer, I cant help but
wonder when this extreme heat
weve continually experienced
in July and August will end.
My weather app has shown
more images of a blazing sun
and cactus with the words
Very Hot in its 10-day forecast for more days than I care
to remember. While I appreciate the artistic representation
of the obvious extreme heat so
many of us are currently experiencing, I wonder if we could
possibly get some additional
images added that would capture the essence of our current
weather status.
Perhaps an image of a dripping ice cream cone with the
blazing sun overhead, an image
of someone sticking their face
into a freezer or an image of an
individual sitting within the
breeze of a fan blowing over a
very large ice cube. These are
all new images Id suggest to
my weather app if they were
crowdsourcing suggestions for
updated Very Hot icons.
Upon further review, I think
Id also suggest that my weather app consider the individual
user or the specific location of
said user when creating the
visual content associated with
the 10-day forecast.
While I stumble upon cactus
growing in central Kansas on
occasion, I really feel the image
my weather app could utilize
should be more reflective of my
surroundings while experiencing this oppressive heat.
For example, a cartoon
image of two children cannonballing into a stock tank with a
blazing sun overhead would be
quite representative for me.
Perhaps an illustrator could
capture the image of our primarily outside farm dog, Rosie,
sprawled out with her belly
covering the cool tile floor in
our bathroom, laying near a

Seneca, 5-4. In the double elimination format, the Muddogs would proceed to drop
their next two contests to Iola, by the score of 3-1, and to Concordia by the final tally
of 8-6. In the first year that the Garnett Legion team fielded both a Junior Legion and
a Senior Legion team, it was an uphill battle over the entire weekend as the Muddogs
started State play with just 10 players and that number whittled down to just 9 players
for the final 3 contests. The Junior Legion team also qualified for their state tournament in El Dorado but failed to place.

10 tips for school success as area schools return to class next week
Locally, the 2022-2023 school
year is getting ready to start.
But fear not here are some tips
for how to help your child transition back to school. Hopefully
this advice will help this fall go
smoother.
As you begin to get ready
for the new school year, weve
got a few tips for how to help
your child transition back to
school easier and help this fall
go smoother. (Phew!)
1. Talk to your childs teacher(s) from last year. If you can
still communicate with last
years teacher(s), ask where
your child struggled the MOST
last year. Was it specific skills?
Was it turning in assignments?
Writing paragraphs? Knowing
this information will help you
have a better plan for in the fall.
2. Use your findings to assess
if your child may need outside
support to get ready for the new
school year.
3. Reflect on last year and
think about the next one. Have
your child share their responses
with you over some ice cream!
4. Impose the two-week rule.
With later bedtimes over the
summer, children need to ease
back into their school routine
rather than having a sudden
change their first day of school.
Using the last two weeks of summer to re-introduce a school
year bedtime routine will make
waking up on that first day a
lot easier. (Think, fewer tears
and less rushing around in the
morning!)
5. Reintroduce regular meal
times. During summer months,
kids tend to grab a snack several
times during the day. Parents
can start reminding students
to get back into a 3-meal-a-day
schedule to regulate their system into the back-to-school
mode. Nutrition is an important
factor in academic performance,
and eating a healthy, balanced
breakfast and lunch keeps kids

6. Create a family calendar.
Time management is tricky
for everyone, but especially
kids and teens. Planning is an
important way to save everyones sanity! Having major deadlines, due dates, events, vacations and extracurricular activities mapped out in one place
helps kids visualize their week,
manage their time and stay on
track. Remember to put the
calendar somewhere centrally
located, so you and your family
can easily see it!
4 Tips for Success When the
School Year Begins
1. Organization is key.
For students … Keeping class
schedules, notes, online portal
login information, projects and
reading materials in logical
order helps your child find what
they need right away. It cuts
down on time spent tracking
things down, and allows more
time for actual studying.
For parents … If your child is
in elementary/primary school
or middle school, youll want
to regularly access your childs
learning management system to
keep an eye out for any red flags.
Are assignments being turned
in? How are their grades? How
organized is their backpack? Do
they have a planner, are they
using it?
If your child is in high school/
secondary school or the last
years of middle school, you want
them to be more independent.
If things are looking organized,
great! If things are not looking
organized, its time to help your
teen get organized and empower
them to keep it that way.
2. Take good notes.
For students … Yes, it does
matter. Taking good notes helps
keep kids grades up, especially
in middle or high school. To
boost note-taking skills, students should practice picking
out the main ideas in conver-

sations, news reports or magazine articles.
For parents … If you notice
your child is not handing
assignments in on time, has
poor time-management skills or
grades are slipping, its time to
talk to your child about WHY
these things are happening.
Are they not understanding the
material? Is your child getting
bored with the work because
they already understand the
concepts and aren't being challenged? These are signs you
want to take note of, because it
means its time to ask for help
from the teacher.
3. Concentrate.
Its important for students
to concentrate and avoid distractions when an instructor is
presenting. This will be even

keeping any remote learning.
Remind your child to take good
class notes, and review them as
soon as possible to make sure
he or she understands. If your
child doesnt understand something, encourage him/her to ask
follow-up questions at the next
class or email the teacher.
4. Speak up.
Students should listen carefully and spend plenty of time
reading directions. But, its normal for students to get tripped
up by homework or test instructions, and they may be more hesitant to speak up during class
after a year of virtual learning.
Tell your child its really OK to
raise your hand and ask a question! Empower them to advocate
for themselves.

Kindness, compassion are important gifts for teachers

MANHATTAN, Kan. A thank
you note, and even a shiny, red
apple, are nice.
But Kansas State University
child development specialist
Bradford Wiles said being kind
to your childrens teachers is
one of the best things parents
can do.
I see supporting teachers
as an expression of our appreciation for them, Wiles said.
While thank you notes and volunteering are helpful, I think
it really makes more impact
when you do nice things for
teachers, and you express your
concerns with kindness.
At home, Wiles encourages
parents to ask children what
theyre doing at school. Parents
can offer to provide classroom
supplies to the teacher, or volunteer time, but make sure
that is what the teacher would
like, he said.
Parents should see their role
as being supportive, compared
to teachers as the primary educators at school.
We want to make sure that
we honor the teachers roles
and not step on their toes, but
we also want our children to
fully understand the value that
we place on forming solid relationships with trusted adults in
their lives, Wiles said. When
we give respect to the teachers
in our childrens lives, children
start to understand how much
they do for them. This is especially important when there
are disagreements or issues
that need to be addressed in
the classroom.
When you involve yourself
in respectful, kind and compassionate ways in your childrens
education by supporting teachers and your children, you are
building a community of learning that will likely make a positive difference in childrens
lives, Wiles said.
