Countys DC reps rail on Afghan disaster
Senators, Congressman
pull no punches in Afghan
disaster, safety concerns
BY DANE HICKS
THE ANDERSON COUNTY REVIEW
WASHINGTON, D.C. Politicians in
Washington representing the local
area were working last week to get a
handle on the humanitarian crisis in
Afghanistan brought on by President
Bidens pullout of U.S. forces.
Statements from Kansas representatives joined others from the rest of
the world in concern for Afghanis and
Americans still stranded in the coun-
try, and a near blanket indictment of
Bidens strategy for the pullout from
the country.
Taliban fighters,
who took over the
towns and villages
of Afghanistan with
little
resistance
over the past weeks,
swarmed the capital
city of Kabul and
took over on August
LaTurner
15, when the government dissolved
and President Ashraf Ghani fled the
country. The development left Kabuls
airport as the last departure point
for Americans and Afghan allies in
attempting to leave the country, and
resulted in a re-dispatching of troops
to the country to
provide security for
those attempting to
exit.
Meanwhile,
Taliban surrounded the airport, setting up checkpoints
Marshall
throughout the city
and allegedly murdering Afghan citizens trying to get
to the airport to flee. The scene in
the country has been emblematized
by video images of terrified Afghans
clinging to the outsides of aircraft
trying to take off
from the airport last
week.
Second District
Jake
LaTurner
representing
Anderson County
laid the blame for
the crisis squarely on the Biden
Moran
Administration.
What the world
is witnessing unfold in Afghanistan
is a complete and utter failure of the
Biden Administration, LaTurner
said in a statement. The lack of leadership and planning from the highest
levels of the Administration during
this humanitarian crisis has let down
our allies and significantly damaged
our presence on the world stage.
Senator Jerry Moran banded
together with senators from both parties to outline methods of streamlining the bureaucratic strings delaying
the granting of Special Immigrant
Visas visas given to foreigners documented as having lended special assistance to the U.S. effort in the country.

Chronicler of life in Colony passes at 91
Allene Luedke began her
love of writing as a pen pal,
covered local news 30+ years
BY DANE HICKS
THE ANDERSON COUNTY REVIEW
COLONY You have to like to do it,
Allene Luedke said of writing her Colony
Community News column for decades.
You have to like to feel like youre more
of a part of the community it lets people
keep Colony on the map.
The local writer and historian who
chronicled Colony news and events for
local newspapers for more than three
decades and assisted on a number of local
history books was laid to rest last week.
She was 91.
She began writing
a community column
from Colony in the
early 1960s which was
published in both The
Iola Register and newspapers in Anderson
County owned by the
Garnett
Publishing
Luedke
Company, Inc. She left
the local writers post in
the late 60s but returned to GPI papers in
1987, where she continued until January
2019.
With a weekly column as regular as
clockwork, Luedke made the transition
with the Garnett papers from twice-weekly to weekly in 1996 and was the first of
the companys community correspondents to embrace email as a quicker
means to get her dispatches to the paper.
When she resigned due to health reasons
in 2019, she was the papers only remaining official community correspondent.

in June 1957 I did not know anyone, only
had met my husbands parents once,

GARNETT The man investigators said conspired with a
woman in a lovers triangle to
ambush his rival with a knife
in in July 2020 will be sentenced in a plea arrangement
on Monday.
Sentencing
for Maxwell
Williams of
Kansas City is
set for August
30 on a single
count of felony assault.
Another feloWilliams
ny charge of
interfering
with a law
officer and a misdemeanor
count of violating a protective order will be tossed out,
according to court documents
amended to reflect the specificis of the plea deal. Williams
was initially charged with
attempted murder.
Williams was judged competent to stand trial in April.
Investigators said he lay in
wait in the closet of his sometimes girlfriend Mary Jennings
at her home in Garnett and
ambushed William Hopkins
of Williamsburg as Hopkins
entered the room. Hopkins and
Jennings had allegedly made a
sex tape and sent it to Williams
the previous day in an attempt
to agitate him. Hopkins later
contacted Williams because
he said he tried to contact a
distraught Jennings and could
not find her.
At the time of the incident
Jennings and Williams were
named in an active court order
from June 11, 2020, specifying
no contact. Jennings escaped
prosecution after she agreed to
testify against Williams.
A probable cause document
used in both Williams and
Jennings initial arrests said
Hopkins showed up slashed
and stabbed at Anderson
County Hospital the night of
July 24, later telling officers
Williams had leaped from
Jennings bedroom closet and
attacked him as he entered the
room with Jennings.
Williams August 30 sentencing is set for 9:30 a.m. in
person in Anderson County
District Court.
Court bans man from

embroiled in an eminent
domain lawsuit a decade ago
in Anderson County was permanently banned from doing
business in Kansas last week,
after ignoring more than a
years worth of notices from
the Kansas Attorney Generals
office regarding complaints
about his business practices.
An Allen County judge
found in favor of the state AGs
office and banned Don Diebolt
of Diebolt LLC, from doing further business in Kansas. The
case filing noted two cases

Legislators rally against Kellys Covid spending
BY DANEDRI HERBERT
KANSAS POLICY INSTITUTE/ THE SENTINEL
TOPEKA Republican leaders in the Kansas
House and Kansas Senate will consider legal
action against Gov. Laura Kellys administration over its COVID relief spending.
In a letter to Kelly, Senate President Ty
Masterson, Speaker of the House Ron Ryckman,
Senate Ways and Means Chair Sen. Rick
Billinger, and House Appropriations Chair
Troy Waymaster, say the governor might be
misappropriating federal coronavirus funding.
We have great concerns that this is occurring in violation of state law, the letter reads.
According to the letter, the Attorney
Generals office agrees with Republican leaders.
Lawmakers adopted legislation that lays out
guidelines for a SPARK committee to review
and recommend proposed relief fund expen-
ditures, and for the State Finance Council to
approve relief spending. However, legislative
leaders say Kellys administration spent $87.9
million of COVID-relief funding without the
recommendation of the SPARK committee and
without SFC approval.
For instance, the Kansas Department of
Health and Environment spent $3.7 million
for public service announcements featuring
Kelly and Congresswoman Sharice Davids, a
Johnson County Democrat. The advertisement
urged Kansans to vaccinate or test for COVID19. The commercials aired prior to the Fourth
of July holiday, shortly after the end of the 2021
legislative session. The legislature did not allocate the funding in KDHEs budget.
The letter from Republican leaders also says
the governor spent $1.5 million more than

Mesimer
Van Trump.
She was proud to be the third
generation born on the over
100-year-old Van Trump farm.
She was three years older than
her brother so she was her
dads right hand, helping milk
by hand a dozen cows and in

stationary hay baler. She loved
farming.
She met Morris Luedke
at the Linwood Methodist
Criterion Sunday School Class
in Kansas City. On April 3,
1957, they were married at the
church there. In June of 1957
they moved to Colony to begin
farming. They were blessed
with two children, Mark Philip
and Cheryl Sue.
Prior to marriage, Allene
worked as a secretary in
Richmond, Columbia and
Kansas City, Missouri. She was
the farming assistant to her
husband, housewife, mother,
and the Colony correspondent
to Iola Register and Garnett
Review papers. She loved to
garden, can fruit and vegetables, help her husband in the
fields, and serving her community by writing the Colony
News 47 years. Following
her fathers death, her mother
moved to their home in Colony
where Allene cared for her for
four and a half years, then visited her every other day another four and a half years at an
Iola nursing center.
Allene loved life, her family, and the Lord. At the age
of 21 she joined the Christian
Church in Columbia, Missouri,
serving on the church paper

Bill was born Dec. 7, 1948. He
was born into a military family
that moved often all over the
U.S. His father was Herman W.
Stocks (Louise) and Catherine
Hicks (Don). His moms family
(the Samargos) of W. Virginia
were very important in childhood as they provided some
of his best memories. He had
3 siblings and he was raised
with Carol Borchardt (Terry);
Michael (Phyllis) and Leroy.
Bill insisted on recognizing
other biological family he met
later in life and he grew to
love and care about: James
(Jimmy) Jenson; Tammy Fink,
Tina Fink Timmons, and
Jennifer Tiegan Back. He was
Uncle Bill or Uncle Bubba
to numerous non and biological nieces and nephews over
the years. A role he loved in
particular.
He married the love of
his life. Janet (Lankard)
Stocks, daughter of Don &
Hilda Lankard, April 21, 1979.
They spent 42 adventurous
years together having fun,
they moved a couple of times
back & forth from California to
Missouri and Kansas.
He often stated he was a
jack of all trades and master of none. He worked as a
mechanic for companies such
as Crown Lifts, Caterpillar,
and Southwest Marine. He
also spent years working in
construction. But he will most
be remembered as a Tom
Sawyer. If he could talk you
into doing his job while he told
stories, he was most happy.
He enjoyed reading Louis
LAmour westerns and watching westerns. He also like to
fish and go dancing. In later
years he enjoyed time gardening exotic plants and spending
quiet evenings at home with
his bride and many cats.
Bill had a sharp mind and
wit. He enjoyed a good conversation and wasnt afraid to
stir the pot to get one going.
He had the ability to associate a
phrase or nickname to a person
that would connect them in a
personal way forever. Family
and friends are encouraged to
tell their stories behind those
nicknames and phrases at his
celebration of life. He will be
missed by many.

The mark of a
truly changed heart
One of the most difficult
things for any Christian is to
overcome your past. We have
one past and nothing we can
say or do can change it. This
affects many people so badly
it affects their ability to even
become a Christian.
The Apostle Paul provides
us some guidance on this in
Philippians 3:13-14 when
he says, But one thing I do:
Forgetting what is behind and
straining toward what is ahead,
I press on toward the goal to
win the prize for which God
has called me heavenward in
Christ Jesus. Paul understood
the past cannot be changed but
we have the future in front of
us to be lived. Realizing this
is a crucial step to living a life
for Christ. God addresses this
several times in scripture. He
tells us, though our sins be as
scarlet, they shall be as white
as snow, though they are as red
as crimson they shall be like
wool. (Isaiah 1:18) In Psalm
103:12 we are told, As far as
the east is from the west so
far has he (God) removed our
transgressions from us.
If God is willing to remove
our sins from us as the text
states then we should follow
Pauls advise and forget what
is behind us. In order to do
this we must repent from our
sin receive Christ by faith and
follow and serve him. When
we do this God is willing to
bury our sins in the depths of
the ocean and remember them
no more.
We must then follow and
WEEKLY DEVOTIONAL
BY DAVID BILDERBACK
serve Christ which will result
in our life becoming a testimony. This means our life should
reflect the same characteristics
as Jesus life did. How well we
are able to serve Christ is best
measured by asking ourselves
one question. When non-Christians see you living out your
life what do they see of God?
Do they see a life lived out as
Jesus did or do they see a life
lived out that looks like the
rest of the world. If you are
going to follow and serve Jesus
your life must look like Jesus
life. If the non-Christian sees
no difference between their life
and yours there is no reason
to change their life. Following
and serving Jesus is difficult.
There are times when we will
fail, however, when people see
us fail and then try again they
begin to see the life of Jesus
lived out through us. That is
the mark of a truly changed
heart which is the primary
requirement for winning others to Christ.

OPINION
Some of them were Kansans
As terrified and desperate Afghanis plummeted to their deaths from the wings of U.S.
transport aircraft last week in the early hours
of Joe Bidens Afghanistan horror show, it
bears remembering that some of those young
American soldiers who died securing that lawless country in the War on Terror prior to
Bidens abandonment of it were Kansans.
In these days of disgust at the rank stupidity
with which Biden and his administration of
incompetents has treated American security
and its utter disregard for Afghan humanity,
those Kansans names should be known so
that were reminded of both our states sacrifice
in keeping our nation secure and the pain were
forced to share in Bidens second humanitarian
disaster in less than a year in office.
Lost to that sacrifice is Vinson Adkinson of
Harper, Cody Baker of Holton, Thomas Bohall of
Wichita, David Carter of Hays, Jeremiah Cole of
Hiawatha
Others have sacrificed as well; those who left
limbs and eyes and parts of their bodies and
minds amid the sands and swirling dust and
heat of this long conflict; returning thankfully
with their lives, but forever changed.
Daniel Cox of Parsons, Bernard Deghand
of Mayetta, Richard DeWater of Topeka, Spencer
Duncan of Olathe, David Hall of Uniontown,
Zachary Hargrove of Wichita, Tyler Juden of
Winfield
Their honor was well earned, right up to the
point that their work was undone by an ideology which should never have come to power in
our country; one which elected a presidential
candidate known to lack mental acuity and to
prefer ridiculous equity criteria over competence and ability in his subordinates. The U.S.
had experienced no combat-related casualties in
Afghanistan for some 18 months, and for years
prior to that combat deaths and injuries had
been slight. President Trump, who also initially
sought to abandon Afghanistan but later listened to counsel and thought better of it, as did
President Obama before him, had established
an equilibrium with a small contingency of military and mightier strike power just a phone call
away to protect the problematically still fragile
and corrupt government structure.
Michael Knapp of Overland Park, Jamie
Maugans of Derby, Erik May of Independence,
Jason McMahon of Mulvane, Jeffery Mersman of
Parker, Cale Miller of Overland Park
Now, we see what the lack of that equilibrium
brings a return to the unabated petri dish for
terrorism which can, and has already, reached
U.S. shores, as the corpses of some 3,000 people
in the Sept. 11, 2001, attack reflects. We see the

hanging, lifeless bodies of Afghanis who assisted U.S. and allied forces. We see scenes of melee
at the Hamid Karzai Airport as thousands try to
escape the new age of barbarism of the Taliban.
We see a quick replacement of two decades
of womens rights in the country with now
painted-out womens images on commercial billboards and a return to burkas and the full scale
cultural endorsement of brutality against them.
And its only been a few days.

Its unknown at this point whether even his
benefactors in the liberal mainstream press
can salvage Biden from this disaster of historic
proportions. Like the scenes of bodies leaping
from the burning twin towers on 9/11, the
images of Afghanis clinging to the outside of
moving aircraft and hurtling earthward to their
deaths, all that they might escape life under the
Taliban, is now branded into the world psyche.
Our nations humiliation at Joe Bidens hands is
complete and damning; and because we elected
him, it is deserved.
The names of those who perished while protecting us, so far from the fields and sunsets
of Kansas, will never wear that stain. Instead,
their sense of purpose and duty drives us forward. At Gettysburg, President Lincoln warned
us not to try to consecrate ground already hallowed by the lives and sacrifices of those who
came before, but instead to aim our efforts at
work yet to be done:
It is for us, the living, rather, to be dedicated
to the unfinished work which they who fought
here, have, thus far, so nobly advanced. ###

Sex reassignment surgery on kids is child abuse
The state of Texas has recognized the reality, as identified in the Washington Examiners
July 31 editorial, that sex reassignment surgery on minors is an act of mutilation that
should not be countenanced.
The Cultural Left will howl, but Texas
is right. As it was put by Jaime Masters,
the commissioner of the Texas Department
of Family and Protective Services, genital
mutilation of a child for purposes of gender
transitioning through reassignment surgery
constitutes child abuse.
As Masters explained, This surgical procedure physically alters a childs genitalia for
non-medical purposes, potentially inflicting
irreversible harm to childrens bodies.
The finding allowed for relevant exceptions
for children already affected by certain physical traumas, or who have genetic disorders
affecting ordinary sex development, or who
have unusual chromosomal features. In sum,
Texas sticks to the science, recognizing that
sometimes rare anomalies exist but not allowing them to become a justification for unconscionable procedures on children who dont
need them.
The key recognition is that adolescents
outlooks, moods, and cognitive development
are extremely malleable, whereas completed
sex reassignment procedures tend to be either
irreversible or extremely difficult to undo. It

takes no deep scientific inquiry, but merely
quotidian observation, to know that children
and teenagers go through phases and that
they are prone to trying out new experiences and ideas that dont last.
Science, of course, confirms this. As one
peer-reviewed study put it, in agreement with
virtually every study on the topic, a fundamental reorganization of the brain takes
place in adolescence … Subcortical brain
areas, especially the limbic system and the
reward system, develop earlier, so that there
is an imbalance during adolescence between
the more mature subcortical areas and less
mature prefrontal areas. This may account for
typical adolescent behavior patterns, including risk-taking involving sometimes putting
their health at serious risk .
For adults to indulge such risk-taking, placing the authority of medicine behind it, is
disgusting.
To perform an effectively permanent
change in physiology upon someone because
of their temporary state of mind would be
monstrously abusive. As it is, a quick internet
search readily shows that large numbers of
people, even adults, who undergo sex reassignment procedures seriously regret having done
so. And while the scientific findings on that
score are subject to fierce ideological debate,
it cannot be denied that at least a significant subset of sex transitioners experience
severe depression or, worse, become suicidal.
Indeed, a respected study from Sweden , where
the culture is quite supportive of gender
fluidity, found that the suicide rate among
people who underwent sex reassignment surgery approached 20 times that of the general
population .
For all these reasons, Texas is entirely jusSEE SURGERY ON PAGE 5A
Biden disingenous among his signature disasters
President Biden arrived in office with the
southern U.S. border secure and Afghanistan
in a state of fragile equilibrium.
Eight months later, the border continues
to be deluged with migrants overwhelming
our capacity to properly house and process
them, and we are evacuating our personnel
from Hamid Karzai International Airport in
Kabul overrun by desperate Afghans fleeing
the Taliban.
The crisis at the border and the stunningly
swift defeat in Afghanistan are entirely on
Biden. He took sustainable situations and
overturned them out of ideological fixity and
fantastical wishful thinking.
The outcomes were utterly predictable.
Indeed, anyone who knew anything about the
border or Afghanistan warned what would
happen.
The debacles havent been the product of
forces beyond Bidens control; events didnt
take a hand, he did. These are man-made
disasters.
Throw on top the crime wave in U.S. cities
that is a product of the lefts enthusiasm for
fashionable anti-cop sentiments, and the picture is of a party that is unable to maintain
order or rationally calculate the downside
consequences of its rhetoric and policies.
One hallmark of the Biden approach has
been
laughably false assurances. He maintained at a press conference in March that
there was nothing unusual going on at the
border, when the historic surge had already
begun. Only last month, he confidently pre-
On TV they said it took 15 years for the United
States to recover from the embarrassment of
pulling out of Vietnam. Iranian embassy, hijackings, terrorism. They think the Khmer Rouge
killed a million people in Cambodia after they
werent scared any more that the U.S. would
come after them. How many people do you think
the Taliban will kill in Afghanistan? Those are
real people with real souls and if you dont care
theres something wrong with you. Trump was
the only thing could have stopped this and they
stole the election from him. Democrats cheated,

RICH LOWRY, King Features Syndicate
dicted that thered be no dramatic rooftop
evacuations from Kabul, when a rapid collapse of the government was always a distinct
possibility.
Then, there are the ineffectual warnings.
Biden officials have repeatedly told migrants
to stop coming to the U.S. border, when they
have every incentive to continue to do so,
and his representatives tsk-tsked the Taliban
about sweeping to power by force — something
that they have fought to do for 20 years -because it would supposedly harm the groups
international image.
And, finally, the rank blame-shifting.
Bidens team has outlandishly tried to argue
that President Donald Trump somehow created the conditions for the border spinning out
of control, when the truth is that Trump, after
false starts, figured out how to get a handle on
it. Biden points the finger at Trump, too, on
Afghanistan.
Here, he has more of a case — the so-called
peace deal that Trump cut with the Taliban
was a travesty that undercut the Afghan government. But nothing forced Biden, who has
happily reversed field on most Trump policies,
to abide by an agreement that the Taliban
violated from the outset or to execute a withdrawal that kneecapped the Afghan army in
the midst of fighting season and a gathering
Taliban offensive.
He was the one whose exit denied the
Afghan army the U.S. air support and logistics
it had always depended on, who left without
securing a nearby base in the region, who
didnt care enough about Afghan allies who
had risked their lives for us to ensure that
they could get out of the country, who sent a
message of abandonment that was a blow to
Afghan morale from the top all the way down.
Its a particularly galling Biden rhetorical
move to use the catastrophic failure of the
Afghan forces that he helped bring about to
insist that his decision to leave was the only
responsible one. Hes gone from claiming we
could safely leave because the Afghan security
forces would do just fine on their own, to arguing we had no choice but to get out because
they couldnt manage without us.
Both at the U.S. border and in Afghanistan,
Biden merely had to keep in place what
he inherited to sustain success or at least

I have brought my farm home
excavation to a halt, with a possible return this fall or winter.
Right now Im giving my full
attention to the old rock schoolhouse. Im hoping to complete
this project by Oct.-Nov. of this
year, so Ive a lot of digging
ahead of me. Right now Im concentrating on excavating around
the entire foundation, before
searching elsewhere on the
school grounds.
Here are the last artifacts I dug
at the farm site. By the way these
artifacts have been turned over
to the landowner. They are a
large iron washer, long screw,
mottled Crockery, Mother-ofPearl shell, small clay marble
and a two hole red button.
My heartfelt thanks to Jackie

The Lone Star State will treat
such procedures (other than
the rare exceptions described
above) as legally prosecutable child abuse and also
will prosecute professionals,
including doctors, teachers,
and day-care employees, who
fail to report such abuse.
Consenting adults are
always free to do what they
want to their own bodies. But
when abuse is involved, what
they do to children and adolescents incapable of valid consent becomes the business of
the state. Anyone who abets

The Review learns that J.Q.
McAfee will add quite a number of rooms to the Fourth
Avenue hotel by making the
entire building full three stories. Moreover, the building
will be structured and given a
finishing coat of crushed marble and granite. When the work
is all finished, which will take
some time to accomplish, the
Fourth Avenue will be one of
the most complete hotels in
eastern Kansas.

avoid disaster. On the border,
Trumps pandemic-era controls and his agreements with
Mexico and Central American
countries were sensible and
tested. Afghanistan was more
difficult, but with some determination and finesse, Biden
could have maintained the
minimal U.S. commitment that
had forestalled a Taliban takeover for years.
Instead, in both cases, he quite
literally chose chaos.

"Difficult". For something to
be considered difficult, it must
take much effort or skill; it is
not simple or easy. God gives
us many simple instructions
that can seem to be difficult.
We need the skills he gives
us to follow thru with these
instructions. Loving others,
being kind, being helpful, etc,
can all be simple tasks. But
many times it is difficult to
follow thru on the simplest
things. We need the skills God
gives each of us to accomplish
these tasks. (Ref: 1 Corinthians
9:24 & Hebrews 12:11)
Pastor Chase Riebel gave the
sermon "The Unknown God?",
over Acts 17:16-34. When traveling thru Athens, Paul was
approved by the State Finance
Council on consulting services.
The administration awarded
the funding through a no-bid
contract. In another instance,
the Governors Office distributed $82.7 million to local
governments without a recommendation from the SPARK
committee or approval from
the State Finance Council.
The legislators point out
that Kelly signed two pieces
of legislation that lay out the
process in 2021, House bill
2007 and Senate bill 159. Kelly
announced the creation of
the Strengthening People and
Revitalizing Kansas executive
committee, or SPARK, in June,
though the original SPARK
committee made recommendations for COVID-relief spending starting in March 2020.

across one that was labeled "To
an unknown god". These people were worshipping in ignorance. You need to KNOW what
you're worshipping. Paul took
their unknown god and began
preaching to them about the
One True God. He explained
to them how God made the
heavens and the earth; that
everything was made thru
him. We must get to know God
in a relational way. And that
first step can be difficult and
uncomfortable, it's not easy,
and it might even seem unsafe.
We are called to give up our
lives, let go of old friends or bad
habits, and release all control
to God. If you just take that
first step, you'll find him there
Through the SPARK process, we have transparently
and equitably allocated more
than $1 billion in CARES Act
funds to support businesses, keep Kansans healthy,
improve access to broadband,
and boost our economy, Kelly
said in a press release several weeks ago. Im pleased to
reignite the task force this year
to maintain that transparent
process and show Kansans that
were using these relief funds
to make strategic investments
where they are needed most.
In the letter, legislative
leaders demand that the Kelly
administration immediately
stop spending funds in ways
contrary to Kansas law.
Respect for the rule of law
compels you to cease your
attempt to circumvent the will
of the people as expressed by
the Legislature and approved
by your own, the letter reads.
The letter concludes with a
warning.
If you continue to expend
these funds in a manner that
breaks state law, we will be
forced to explore all necessary
legal actions to see that the
rule of law is upheld and this
challenge to our Kansas system of government is reined
in, it reads.

she said in her final column.
As I became acquainted with
Colony people and an opening
came along, I was hired to write
the Colony News. It worked in
well with farming, raising our
children, and keeping up with
Colony people who volunteered
their news for the paper, she
said. It was a service I enjoyed
for the Colony Community.
Born and raised in northwest Missouri, Luedke started
writing to pen pals she found in
a Kansas City magazine when
she was in grade school in the
1940s. At one time she had as
many as 21 pen pals, she told
the Review in a 2013 interview.
Some of those snail-mail letter
relationships lasted into high
school and at least one even
into her 20s.

Diebolt was ordered to pay

courts action.
Diebolt was owner of land
north of Garnett on U.S.
Highway 59 which was seized
by USD 365 in an eminent
domain action in 2010 and
2011 when the district sought
a site on which to construct the
Garnett Elementary School.
Diebolt said at the time he
planned to use the acreage to
develop a retail center, but was
unable to stop the court action
via the school district.
The school district initially
paid Don and Susan Diebolt
$278,800 for the parcel, but the
Diebolts appealed, claiming the
property was worth $432,000. A
jury rendered a verdict value
on the property of $249,000,
which was less than the school
district originally paid, after a
panel of local realtors analyzed
the tract for the local district
court.

At first I thought this was an

This will be a scar on

organizations, birthdays and
family and social gatherings
were a staple of her writing.
A strict organizer, Luedkes
columns followed a regimented
formula that separated calendar events from general news
and set various types of articles and news items apart in
their own categories. Staffers
at the Review noted her columns were almost always on
time and almost always without typographical errors.
In addition to newspaper
writing, Luedke worked on
Colony history and Northcott
Community history books as
well. As community correspondents winnowed over the years,
Luedke lamented the decline
in community journalism
which was eventually replaced
by the hodge-podge banter of
Facebook and Internet websites and generally, a lack of
connection to and knowledge of
local communities.
